In this video I talk about why the 300 PRC isn't more popular. It's a really good 30 caliber magnum that hasn't taken off like it's PRC siblings.

You hit the nail on the head with ammo availability for the .300 PRC. If Hornady is the only game in town along with limited loads, it will become another "has been" in the .30 caliber cartridge world.

The 300 PRC and the 300 Win Mag have exactly, the same performance, Exept the 300 PRC uses a longer Action/magazine that alows heavier/longer Bullets. If you look at the availability of cartridges in 30 Cal, #1 308, #2 30-06, #3 300 WM and a tie between 300 Blackout and the 30-30 Win. Guess the millions of 30 cal users are not going to trade in their rifles for the new kid on the block. I'm geting a used 300 Weatherby and will rebarrel to 300 WM. Mag action/magazine, and can seat out the heavy/streamlined bullets to 300 PRC performance, and still use factory ammo

The reason 6.5 prc took off was because it fit a role people wanted, “magnum creedmoor” many including myself saw the creed’s numbers and said “pass.” Those same people like myself say the prc numbers and said “that’s what I wanted.”

The problem with the 6.5 prc is a few companies cheat and chamber it in long actions. Negating the “advantage” of it being a shortish action length. But to say it’s a “complete waste.” Nosler load data, prc drives the 150 grain ablr to a blazing 3050 with four different powders. 6.5x284 wasn’t even tested at that weight. What cartridge was a waste of time?

Mark and Sam After Work (the western Australian speedshop mechanic & ULR shooter) demonstrates that for Handloaders, 300 win mag can run heavier projectiles with LESS pressure than 300PRC due to case/chamber design allowing slightly higher velocity… I know it sounds counter intuitive but this gentleman demonstrates and explains why.

But then you’re still stuck with a belted case and the benefits only accrue of you deviate from the standard 300WM config that makes it awful. It’s like saying if I take this Honda Civic, retain the radiator cap replace everything else with a Corvette, then the “civic” is faster than a Mustang. Well, yes. I suppose it would be. You can’t really compare a tweaked and developed 300WM chamber (much longer throat, revised headspace) to essentially a SAAMI 300PRC and use that to make assessments about the cartridge itself. Cartridges and chambers go hand in hand. And even after all that tweaking, the advantage of the 300WM variant was not huge- it was real and repeatable, but not huge.

@@G5Hohn touché, bottom line, if you’re a hunter, 300wm will do it, because ethical hunting distance, if your a long range shooter 300 Norma or 30-378 Weatherby… besides if you’re an elr/ulr shooter, tweaking is your thing anyways, especially because screw hornady

@@WesternReloader Agree completely. Part of the reason the 300WM seems so intractable is because it works. What I consider to be major flaws (for my use as a LR shooter and reloader) have no bearing for 90% of users who are hunters. The guys who shoot PRCs are shooters like me who want better brass life, and a better SAAMI chamber that doesn't require getting a custom reamer spun up just for a couple barrels. We reloaders/handloaders need to remember that we are a small minority of shooters in the overall picture.

My theory is that PRC is targeted at factory ammo shooters and cost is a real issue. It is an awesome round if you can afford the rifle, scope and ammo to feed it. If you reload, high bc bullets can be used with the other 30 cal chamberings. The cost of a fast twist barrel is way more cost effective. 300 WSM and 300 Win Mag is not much different.

@@diggernash1 I am a big fan of 6.5 PRC. In Houston, Hornady ELDX and Match go for 55-65 a box. The Norma Golden Target goes for 39 a box and shoots great for me. The 300 PRC is only occasionally on the shelves from Hornady and cost 75-95 a box. I think this is the biggest part of the problem with 300 PRC. Once you start reloading these calibers, and the similar older variants, the differences in performance lessen.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. The only thing I would add is this video discusses factory offerings of the 30 PRC ammo. In my opinion a lot of the crowd that is attracted to the 30 PRC are reloaders. As long as brass is available the reloader is good to go. I currently own a 300 WM and would love to upgrade to the PRC, but I am waiting to see if brass availability improves. Right now you can find it, but it is expensive. Quite a bit more than what I can get 300 WM brass for.

Not trying to pick a fight, but does a shorter action and heavier bullet really make it an upgrade when factory ammo is almost nonexistent. We're loading .300 Win. @@thomashaley7657 In response to what you said: I don't buy factory ammo so ammo availability is not as important to me. I reload everything I shoot, so if there is brass available I am good to go and I can find brass for the PRC. I would agree with you to some extent that me calling the PRC an UPGRADE might have been a poor choice of words. For probably 80-90% of the shooters out there the 300 WM will get the job done in any hunting situation just fine. The main reason that I would consider switching from my WM to the PRC is the belt. The 300 WM has a belt which means that head spacing is done off the belt rather than off the shoulder. I also like the slightly longer neck on the PRC. Are those two things UPGRADES? Yes, but not huge ones. With regard to the heavier bullets, I am not a long range hunter. My hunting shots are almost always under 300 yards and the 165g-180g class bullets work just fine at those ranges. At the end of the day, I would strongly agree with you that the 300 WM is a proven winner and it is not going anywhere.

A 300 PRC needs a 3.7-3.8" Magnum action lengh. If you get a 3.8" action and rebarrel for the 300WM, you have the exact same performace as the 300PRC with reloaded(220-250 grns) long bullets. You allready got the brass and the equipment. I'm doing it with the 7 Rem Mag. Mag action, rebarreled for 7RM and a bit long throated carbon barrel. Just for hunting and doubt will use heavier than 180 grns bullets

I think you spoke volumes when you stated that the 30-caliber field is already well-established. Shooters are proud of their 30 caliber choices, like no others out there. It's hard for even the mighty Hornady Manufacturing Company to get in there with that kind of playing field to market against, regardless of innovation and marketing muscle. My own personal restraints lie in hunting and shooting philosophy. I'm don't have access to ELR distances and won't shoot at any big game at distances that make this round so appealing at being able to handle. I think it's capabilities are cool but not cool enough to buy a new gun for. Great discussion! It's been on my mind all day...

Maybe take a look at how many high end brass manufacturers make PRC brass vs 300wm. The PRC is a hand loader’s round. That’s why you don’t see much factory ammo for it and it’s marketed more for target than hunting use.

Good topic, today! Yes, the 300 PRC does not really solve a need in the 30 caliber arena. As you mentioned, there really isn’t enough difference from a practical standpoint. Especially for hunters. And it has more recoil than the other PRCs. And it’s not as well supported in comparison to the other PRCs, and many older cartridges as well. I think the 7mm PRC will be far more popular than the 300 PRC. Also, we can’t overlook the geopolitical and pandemic aspects that have affected supply chain issues all over the world and in all industries. All of that has impacted the gun and ammo industries as well, in terms of support, over the last few years. And inflation is cutting into discretionary funds that were previously being spent on nonessential items. That is affecting many shooters and hunters right now, as well.

Here is what a lot of people forget about when comparing new cartridges. As someone like me living in an area that requires lead free, the 300PRC is a much better option for seating super long heavy lead free bullets. A 300 win mag almost 70% of that same bullet is seated inside of the case reducing powder charge and also cannot be seated further out to improve accuracy. Also head spacing is more accurate on a beltless vs a belted cartridge. The 300prc is pretty much the factory option for dudes that used to custom chamber a long throated 300 win mag. In terms of hand loaders and lead free hunters the 300prc takes the cake.

@@RuggedSportsmen In a standard/long action the limit to OAL cartridge is the Magazine. With a 300 PRC you need a Magnum/3.6" OAL action/magazine. If you have a rifle where there is 1/4" of space between the 300WM bullet and front of magazine. you can handload whatever bullet. I have a very old 30-06 that will rebarell to 35 Whelen, and when afordable will get a 300 Weatherby(Used $500, new $700) and rebarrel($500 to $1000) to 300 Win Mag. Long throated for those long copper bullets (Doubt will use anything heavier than 200 Grns) I reload, and have thought about the 300 PRC for a new rifle, but ammo/components are scarce. 300 WM everywere. The 300 PRC is a great looking cartridge, but I think the COAL is hurting it as not all long actions and magazines can support it. Also, ballistically it has maybe 50-100 FPS advantage over the 300 WM, or I can give up 100-150 FPS and use the 300 WSM that is very similar looking but 0.9" shorter. Thus the main advantage seems to be being able to seat bullets out away from the doughnut. Great video, you made a lot of really great points. However, there’s a really important one I think you left out. The advantage the 300 PRC gives over the win mag is range. But does anyone actually use the win mag at range? Yes, I know there are military snipers chambered in 300 win mag. Not counting that exception, who is using 300 win mag for precision rifle? That seems to be what Hornady had in mind for the cartridge, after all they did call it the Precision Rifle Cartridge. But no one uses magnum 30 cals for precision rifle. It has no real trajectory advantage over the 6.5 creed or 6mm creed. With the disadvantages of much more recoil, and much more cost. Good luck shooting a match with 250 grain A-tips. Your wallet will be a whole lot lighter, and your shoulder a whole lot more bruised than everyone else playing the game. And (almost) no one is hunting at the ranges of where 300 PRC begins to edge out the win mag in performance. So really the only people who would actually buy a 300 PRC are the sniper LARP type people, and there aren’t a ton of them.

Thanks for replying! My comment may not have been very clear and I agree, very different performance from the standpoint of 300 PRC vs 6.5 Creed. I was just trying to make a point by saying, just because you can put a higher BC bullet in there, doesn’t mean it’s optimal. To exaggerate even further, you put a 500gr bullet in a 300 PRC cartridge (provided you had the twist rate and cartridge overall length) you would end up with low enough velocities to where that would no longer be an advantage. 300 PRC I would say is not optimized to take advantage of a higher twist, which is also where the limitations of the 6.5 creed would be for requiring optimal expansion in a hunting scenario. I hope this makes more sense.

🕵️‍♂️ And the number of factory loads in various bullet weights, whereas the 300 prc only deals with the heavier bullets! If you look at the 338 WM, by comparison, it can accomplish the same thing (Muzzle Velocities of 2850 ft/s with similar weight bullets and similar trajectories, by using Bullets with B.C.'s over 0.6) that the 300 prc can do and with less powder and recoil and with a larger frontal diameter bullets! The 338 WM has more heavy bullets, hunting bullets, and quality bullet options too! 🤔
@ronlowney4700
@ronlowney4700 Жыл бұрын
🕵️‍♂️ If we look at the Nosler #9 Online Manual, the 338 WM (with 71.5 grains of IMR 4350 powder) will push a 225 grain Nosler ABLR bullet (B.C. of 0.611) at a Muzzle Velocity of 2,882 ft/s, generate 36.93 ft lbs of recoil, and only drop -36.3" at 500 yards (when sighted in at 200 yards)! Meanwhile, that new 215 grain Terminal Accent bullet, out of the 300 prc, is going 2,860 ft/s and will have -36.5 " of drop at 500 yards! And, the 300 WM (using 76 grains of Reloader 26 Powder) and pushing a 210 Nosler ABLR bullet will have a -35.8" drop, generate 34.84 ft lbs of recoil, and have a similar starting Muzzle Velocity of 2,874 ft/s! So, the 300 WM has more versatility in the lighter bullets, but if you want to shoot the heavier ones, then the 338 WM has a definite advantage and will make a bigger wound channel, with it's bigger diameter and heavier bullets! 🤑

RW, I think the 300 PRC lacked the marking campaign of many of the new cartridges. Couple that with the lack of rifle availability and ammo availability, what you get is just another good cartridge that will soon be in the obsolete category. As you so rightly pointed out, the PRC isn't doing anything that the Win., Weatherby and RUM haven't been doing for years. I see no reason to make a change, even if I could find a rifle and ammo. Soon it'll be with the 300 SAUM. Cheers, Jeff

You have to look at what you would use it for. The main focus for this cartridge is hunting. Not many are going to shoot it in competition. In 30 caliber, the 300 WSM is probably the most popular. No it doesn't do well with the heaviest 30 bullet, but it will shoot many effective hunting bullets very accurately with the least amount of recoil in the 30 caliber magnums and is widely available in factory loads. With this new generation of 6.5 Creed shooters out there, they will never switch to a 300 PRC due to the recoil level. I also think the 7mmPRC will suffer the same fate. The 7mm Rem Mag is pretty much the most recoil hunter will take in hunting rifles shooting in field positions. Not many will shoot 7mmPRC in competition either. The 300 WSM is pretty much the highest recoil cartridge that sees some use in competition.

Now, the popularity of the prc cartridges is with the smaller two - the 6.5 prc and 7mm prc - which is much greater than the 300 prc! What most of these companies "refuse to accept" is that most of the country is shooting Whitetail Deer No Bigger than my dog, don't need a Big Magnum, and wouldn't want the recoil either! Currently, 10 States Don't Even Allow Muzzle Breaks Either! So, the "Real Problem" is that these companies are "out of touch" with their customers! 🤣 I gave them up 30 years ago Austin! 🤭 Best decision that I ever made too! 🤔 Now you know why I can afford to buy more guns! 🤠👍

There’s nothing being invented today that’s any better then the cartridges released 40-50 years ago.

Off the shelf, match grade .30 cal cartridges with poly-tipped projectiles & a BC of 0.777 were a thing in the 70s ? Yeah, I don't think so Elmer.

It's kinda like the Nosler 30 nosler is dying while the 28 Nosler is selling good.

Us that like the 300 win mag is starting to get the 300 PRC but is just to much for ammunition and not much avant eg the 300 PRC has over the 300 win mag for the price not good enough. I like the 30 caliber rounds but is not a big difference between the two for hunting. 6.5 prc for the win great deer slayer.

300 PRC really doesn’t check any boxes that weren’t already checked. The recoil sucks, and with the cost of components and factory loads it’s a no for me.
