I like Gavin's stuff on precision shooting, but I am an older hunter that still uses the old standby cartridges. They worked years ago, they still work today. So what if they are old and boring, they still work and work good !! So I love Guy's, hunting cartridge spots on the old favorites, the 308, 30-06, ect. Keep it up Guy, you have a fan base out here !!

Thanks. Sometimes I do review a "new-fangled product" because at UR we do try to bring cool new stuff to the attention of our viewers. Gavin has introduced some amazing things. I'm trying not to be too stuck in my ways, and I like trying the new stuff too. But yes, mostly I like handloading, shooting, then reporting on it. :)

That 220 RN looks fine for 300yd and closer which covers a lot of hunting. Those 212gr Hornady look very outstanding for longer ranges. Both these Hornady bullets look outstanding from a 30-06.

Just because the 308 Win is 30 cal, doesn't mean it has to be loaded excessively. I don't see anyone overloading the 30-30, 300 Savage, 30M1 carbine, etc. Any comparisons done with the 308, has the rifle with a shorter barrel and heavier bullets almost as if someone is purposely trying to discredit the 308Win. I only hunt moose, using 308 Win up to 300 yards, or 300 Win mag up to 500 yards. I reload for both. In the 308 I use either IMR4895 or Varget, 165gr bullets, various cases, magnum primers. In my 300Win Mag I use H1000, 180gr Nosler Partitions, various cases, magnum primers. I have never wounded or lost a moose yet, in 48 years hunting. Stay safe, vigilant and happy shooting

I've been using the Hornady. 308" 212 gr ELD-X bullets along with Alliant Reloder 23 in most of my 30-06 rifles since 2017. Accuracy has been exceptional. My sporter 30-06 rifles, all with 22" barrels, have been producing muzzle velocities @ 2,430 fps, here in FL (right at sea level), in winter, with temperatures @ 50°F and barometric pressures @ 30.1 in/Hg. Not too bad for a 30-06. My 24" barreled 30-06 rifles only saw a slight increase in velocity over the 22" barrels, producing @ 2,480 fps under about the same environmental conditions. I've only taken a handfull of @ 160 to @ 220 lbs whitetail deer and less than a dozen @ 80 to @ 250 lbs hogs with these bullets, at ranges from @ 50 yrds to @ 280 yrds, but bullet performance has been excellent, at least in exit hole size. Never recovered a single one of those 212 gr pills. Not for lack of trying. I would have loved to have a few of those post-impact bullets to examine. But heck, DRT is awesome. The furthest any of those animals ran was @ 30 yrds. Great performance from an excellent bullet design.

I'm interested in the heavy for caliber bullets because I think they punch well above their weight, as demonstrated in the downrange performance of the 308 & 30-06. I don't need a magnum if a standard or short action cartridge will work. What I'm curious about is how that 212gr bullet will do in a 308 out a 24" barrel. It was only 200~fps slower than the 06. How much ground can be made up with an extra 8" or barrel? If the 308 can gain even 25fps/in, it will be near enough to the bigger cartridge as makes almost no difference.
@guyminer3168
@guyminer3168 Жыл бұрын
Well, it's going to get closer. 25 fps seems like a reasonable estimate. Sadly my 24" 308 doesn't have a fast enough twist rate to stabilize those big 212's or I'd give them a try.

I have always liked the roundnose boolits in 6.5x55 , 270 , 308 , & 06 for whitetails and hogs & occasionally a rouge fox squirrel, not always the heaviest available for caliber, but roundnose sp really penetrate and don't cause alot of bloodshot meat. Now this is all at "woods" ranges maybe out to 200yds they work well and seem to be extremely accurate in every caliber used. Long range is obviously another story.

My question is why would I go for a round nose over a spitzer like the hornady ELD-X? Don't they both expand? I was thinking about building a 300 PRC and hand loading for it. Would it be worth loading both bullet types?
@robertdunbar5854
@robertdunbar5854 Жыл бұрын
Good morning buddy Just saw this. We've been hunting. In a 300 prc I would definitely use Spitzer type boolits because it is a long range power house. That caliber looks to be great for those far shots and long range target. A roundnose bullet would hamper your down range ballistics. I like rn bullets in woods hunting situations, shots within and mostly under 100yds.
@nathanbailey9153
@nathanbailey9153 10 ай бұрын
@@hardlylivin6602 Round nose don't deflect quite as much if they hit some brush or twigs compared with the spitzer type. This is mostly useful in close, brush filled woods at less than 100 yards. You shouldn't be intentionally shooting through brush, but sometimes you will not see a twig or brush or grass, and a big, heavy round nose can save the shot in that case. More useful in a short brush gun for very close up shots. Not really the application of your 300 PRC.

I have all 3. I built my 300prc just because my buddy had already rented the reamer and I had a Green Mountain 1:10 barrel lying around. Finished at 25.5", in and old rem 700 L action and a stupid heavy tacmod chassis that was collecting dust. 3,100fps with a hornady 200 eld-x over RL26. Very little load development and I was hovering around 1moa. 150gr gmx north of 3,600fps over RL26 as well but shooting closer to 1.5-1.75moa. Maybe I need to give some heavier bullets a chance...but I can't imagine needing "more" of anything out of this cartridge. The 300 prc has effectively made the 300wm irrelevant. No sloppy chamber to deal with, no belt, good brass, etc, etc. I probably won't hunt with mine, but I could see building something that weighs less than half of what I cobbled together for big bear or elk at longer ranges.

It produced subMOA groups past 600yrds. Looking at Varget might be a better option if I get the same accuracy. Also what your explaining in the vid is the reason I went to the 212 ELDX for my 308. What you mentioned on Bull elk vs cow/smaller elk also applies in spades to black bear....they just get so much bigger through the chest-way more muscle. 150# to 300# is one thing, but when they get over 500# they're getting into grizzly size. I know quite a few guys who like their 45-70's for that...although the 30 calibers tend to be the favorite.

The 1:10 are fairly common for .308, but 1:7 is pretty much just some one off specialty. Not really relevant to 98% of the people out there. Still, at least we have some safe loads to consider.

It's interesting that, for the 220 gr 308, the Hornaday manual lists a max load for varget at 40.1 gr and 2200 fps using a 22 inch barrel. However, you achieved the same velocity, with the same load, using a 16 inch barrel. Makes you wonder if their listed velocities are a bit conservative or maybe you just don't lose a lot of velocity when it comes to these extremely heavy for caliber loads. What powder charge were you using for the reduced velocity loads that you shot the gel block with?

I've got a 24" Krieger barreled .308 and a couple of 24" 30-06's. However my 308 has a 1:12 twist rate and doesn't stabilize the long and heavy bullets. With bullets of 175 grains or less though, it's quite accurate. I find that with various 165 or 168 grain bullets my 308 tops out in the 2700 - 2800 fps range. With the same bullets the 30-06 produces 2900+ fps at max loads. Not a huge difference, 150 fps more or less for the most part. We chose Gavin's short barreled 308 for this simply because it has a fast twist barrel that easily stabilized the long 212 grain ELD-X bullet. It was really a comparison of the two bullets at various muzzle velocities, not really a cartridge comparison.
@RevHiker

@@guyminer3168 totally understand the twist rate issue, and I understand why you chose the one you did, and I would have done the same thing in your position. The first 30-06 I ever shot was a Win. 670, with an old wire reticle 3-9. I got it from a pawn shop for my middle brother. The least expensive ammo available was Sears, rebranded Winchester, 180 gr round nose. That rifle loved that ammo. Put a whole box into an 1 1/2" circle traced on a poster board off a rolled up comforter on top of an old concrete bench, pretty much as fast as I could shoot and load the magazine. Those long bearing surfaces many times group better than the boat tails, but your shoulder, if you weren't a die hard duck hunter like I was back then shooting the double x magnums from an 1100 with no but pad, might have gotten tired. Unfortunately, my younger brother "gifted" it to a friend after my middle brother's death.😢 I still like the 180 RNs and shoot them from my sporterized Eddystone and they group about the same at 100 for me, also in my Garand, with adjustable gas plug. Where I hunt, most shots are under 150yds. The last hog I shot with the Garand using some old Rem 180 Core-Lokt RN, from the old green and white box, dropped like a rock with both shoulders perforated at about 85 yards. Have not had a chance to take a deer with either, as I take many different firearms afield, but I don't think the 180s would be "too much". We may find out this season.

Yes a .300 win mag with a traditional flat base cup and core bullet is still going to spit out faster than a 30-06 with a high bc 212gr the .300 Win mag with a flat base bullet has more drag, and it's going to lose velocity and kinetic energy sooner. I load 180 grain round nose interlocks for my 7600, it's a 30-06 and I guess most would consider 180 heavy for the 30-06 since most people use 150-165 grain. When you're a dogger and a snow tracker like I am, you want the weight and momentum of the heavier bullet to get through the brush and the deer at least than ideal shots alot of time. Multiple shots and hits on a deer, bear or moose are the norm for people who hunt like I do here in the Northeast; the 180 grain round nose interlocks get the job done.

@@bushleague3472 I don't know if they make them in factory loads but if you're a reloader you should be able to find them. I got about 800 of em but I'm up here in Canada

@@FurandFowl9 Where in Canada? I'm from Alberta, and mainly a bush stillhunter/ tracker as well. I use a canoe to do river hunts in the early season, which is mostly bush hunting but with occasional long shots near the river. I dont reload, but am thinking I should probably start.

I don't think so, and I'm a big fan of standardizing one load for a rifle. Then I know it's always sighted in, always ready to go.
