YOUNGCOL is another Asian brand, much like YOUSHARES, BTSKY, and SOUCOLOR all trying to sell decent-to-cheap quality products on Amazon. But are these products any good and at $30 for a pencil case, one would hope it would be worth the money to protect our valuable art supplies.
In this video, I explore one YOUNGCOL product: a 300-slot Colored Pencil case, that also claims to hold 200 gel pens, too.
• Brand: YOUNGCOL distributed by UNICAN (who also sells book covers, plastic cups, and door stops)
• Style: Art supply organization item
• Color: comes in Gray ($28 USD), UK ($29 USD), or Black ($30 USD)
• Product specifications: 4.7" x 8.5" x 11.5"
• Storage capacity: up to 300 colored pencils, 200 gel pens (can also fit fewer Fineliners and Copics)
• Material: Digitally printed Nubuck leather (it's actually vinyl, not even close to leather)
• Uses: pencils, pens, crayons, etc.
• 100% satisfaction guarantee, 100% money back policy
You can usually tell by the grammar (ie, "Cover is made up of best digital printing," "It's an great gift," and "NICE PRESENT") that this is a product from Asia and what this company views as a "top quality product" may not meet the same standards of your idea of a "top quality product."
The fact that it claims that it's made from "digitally printed Nubuck leather," yet is actually made of thin vinyl suggests something on it's own.

Thanks for the review, Mark! I’ve yet to find a marker or pencil case that really makes me happy. That thing with the corners is *always* the drawback for me. I did find a way to get around it to some extent. I used a prong fastener (used to hold 2-hole top-punched papers in a file folder) to make a rigid support for each of the floppy corners. I was able to cut the 2 prongs off and then align all 3 pieces flat next to each other and duct tape them to the fabric. Then I bent that “panel” I created so it was rounded enough to let the bag close properly. The prongs are pretty inexpensive if you don’t already have some. I probably paid about $5 for a box of 100 and I’ve found all kinds of uses for them. Most recently I’ve used across the top of face masks to help keep the mask close to the nose & cheeks. Who knew? 🙂

Who knew is right! What a great solution. I always ask myself, "did they test this with actual pencils in it?" I'm the same as you - every bin or case is never what I'm exactly looking for. Arava Erskine said below that "cutting out the trays" was a good solution, which I'm inclined to consider doing. Those panels are valuable on their own, but perhaps with a different bag? Worth exploring! Thank you always for your kind words and support! I hope you're staying healthy on your end! ~ Mark

Thank you so much for checking this one out, Kate! I hope you're doing well and imagine you're home like the rest of us. We've got two seniors who are not having a graduation, prom, or any of the other senior rights of passage, so you can likely imagine how that's going! I feel so badly for them all, too. 13 years of school to come down to a virus to invalidate it all. This is one for the books, for sure. Anyhow, I hope you are doing well and glad to know you're productive as always! I'm torn between being inside my tiny studio at home or being outside working in the yard. loL! Cheers! ~ Mark

Thank you, always, Sharon! I appreciate your time with this one. I don't do a lot of reviews, which I may try to change up on. I've got some products that I can't find much out there on, so maybe it's worth exploring. As for the pencils, you understand what I mean. It's a challenge when you've got tins of good quality art supplies buried so it's too much effort to dig them out. I'll be rethinking my whole set up in the next months. We'll see. Glad you're all well on your end! We're doing good here, except I may need to lose this Covid 19 I've put on since this started! lol!!

After the video I got out my pencil case before I said anything. The ones I have say Pencil case,draw a beautiful world. It is a lot stiffer and has mice and pumpkins on it. They seemed (I have two, different sizes) a little expensive. But after the season of fall was over they were on sale on Amazon. Okay, I am getting off why I am writing this note. I loaded my pencils the opposite way you did yours. The tips point out and not down into the seams of the case. I have never had a tip break or get damaged. I dont know if that would help or not with your case. I have my good watercolor pencils and charcoal and graphite and no damage there either. Be free and safe.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and write that, Essie Tangle. I appreciate your feedback so much! Another person wrote the same thing. I think with this case it may be wiser to put them in the way you suggested, however, I did try it that way, also. Not sure why I didn't mention that in the video... I thought I did. Alas, it do agree it would keep them safer, but not altogether safe. I found that because the panels shift so much, when the pencils are upright, the tips get caught in the edging of the panel and, when trying to close the whole thing, the tips also got caught in the zipper, which I couldn't see until I was zipping it shut. It would just require a little more caution. The thing is, when I close the bag and zip it up - once I lift it by the handle, the points all facing the middle of the case (the inner spine, I guess), fall onto their non-pointy ends which is good. If I did it the other way, they'd fall onto the inner shell/zipper area. It's weird and I really think the flaw in the design is that the panels shift too much and the shell enclosure doesn't leave enough room. I'd give the case 3/5 stars.

@@violettahaven3706 Thank you for the link! Have you considered putting the pencils in the other way around? (Points up). That might also make putting them in the cover/end panels a little easier too.
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 4 жыл бұрын
It's a fair question, Natalie Clothenridge, which I thought I mentioned in the video, but obviously forgot to. I did actually flip them the other way, but the tips of the pencils got caught up in the top of the panel and the teeth of the zipper closure. Because when you collapse the case to close it, the panels are loose and shift, so as you zip it closed, it can catch the tips unknowingly. Either way, there is a slight flaw in the space and how they shift. Good for storage, in my opinion, but not for consistent, daily use. Thank you!

I had one pencil case where some of the panel inserts were held in by velcro. You could remove the panels if you didn't want more than two panels. Still, it wasn't worth it. Finding a good pencil case holder is difficult. You need to find a good seamstress to help you come up with a good one. Lol, I know the odds are probably not good. Thank you for posting.

You know, Arava Erskine, I actually thought about cutting them out, but decided that would ruin the bag. But, you're totally right! I really should consider that because it would make the whole bag easier to use, OR I could actually use a different bag, altogether. Hmm. Great idea! Thank you!

Thanks for the video Mark! I love seeing your videos come up because I always know it will be interesting. I read the other comments and they had the same idea that came to me. What if you put the pencils in the other way with the tips pointing out instead of in. The tips wouldn't get mashed together that way then. I just looked at my case - Tran - and that's how I put my pencils in there. It will hold 120 pencils, but I have a bit fewer in there because of the same problem with the corners and not being able to get the pencils in and out on the outside edges. But it works fine for me. And the zipper is really good. Don't remember how much it cost though. Cheers from a chilly rainy day in Northern California. :-D

Thank you so much for checking this out and for your kind words, Melena Schneider! The problem was that when I put them in the case the other way (points out), when I picked the case up, the points all fell to the bottom toward the zipper, so they got banged around and compromised by the edging on the panel and the outer shell. Kind of a no-win either way. It'll be a fine storage bag for my secondary pencils, but for my "good" ones, I'll keep them as they are for now! lol!

Thank you, Puffy Jo! I wish I'd shown in it the video, but I think I cut it out... I actually did put them in the other way, as well, but when I put them in facing up, they face down when I pick the case up, sending the tips of the pencils to the bottom of the case by gravity, so when I open the zipper, it cuts right across the tips of those panels it touches. The only workaround is to remember to gently turn the case fully upside down before opening, which is annoying. I think honestly, either way the pencils are placed, the case is too tightly designed not to put the tips and barrel ends are risk of slight damage or breaking. Thank you for the suggestion, though! I just wish I hadn't edited out that detail. ugh!! lol!!! I hope you're all well on your end! Cheers! ~ Mark

Mark, can you test your wax Arteza pencils and see if they’re water soluble-ish? Lindsay did a video recently showing her older (not the new ones) Arteza pencils were slightly water soluble. I’m interested if others find that to be true of theirs. I don’t own them so I can’t test.
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that was one of those things many early adopters found out the hard way with Arteza's colored pencils. I remember using them and trying to add a wash behind them, thinking they'd be fine because, well, it works with Polys and Prismas, and after all, they're WAX. But, when the color suddenly activated and became more than I expected, it was a bit of a surprise! lol! So, to answer your question, yes, mine do activate slightly with water, though I wouldn't use them like a watercolor pencil. Cheers! ~ Mark

So ... All in all, good for storage XD Nice review, thank you. Can see others have commented about reversing the pencils further down. I made my own of these kinda sleeves to put in a ring binder a while ago. But I don't really like the shifting and rigid feel of this kind of storage. I'll be sewing a "roll up" pencil case at some point instead. It might be clunky but at least not rigid ;) Also ... I should really do a re-organizing of my art space ... :|
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 4 жыл бұрын
I'll tell you, I despise re-organizing my space. Mine is very narrow and rectangular with a severely pitched ceiling, so there's not a lot of room to move or put things that are easy to access. I may change to a different room in the house... we'll see. I might need another month to deal with that! lol! As you said though, all in all, the case is good for storage. I've even left it open on my side-table just for quick access, which is good. I think I might need to just break down and make my own case. Something accessible and sturdy, that will hold everything. That's what I wanted, but this definitely wasn't it. I'll figure something out! Cheers and be well! :)

@@MDCampbell Oh, I can definitely imagine! My area is smack in the middle of the living room, only being closed off with a cloth. There is only so much I can do with the furniture. But it needs reorganizing, as my art-priorities has shifted :) A different room sounds like a solution, at least to get away from the pitched ceiling! But yeah, that sounds like an ordeal XD Excited to see what you come up with in the future :D And right back at you

I was really hoping this was going to be good. I have a variety of different kinds of pencils in tins and containers in my drawers and every now and then I think to myself that I would love to have a better way to organise them. I really like my Derwent 30 pencil canvas wrap for travel but I'd love to find a good solution for keeping everything in one place at home. I'm not sure about these kind of cases though, it seems like the pencils on the inside of the cover would be awkward to remove which could get annoying.

Thank you for checking this one out, Diane, and I hope you are doing well through all the world craziness these days! As for the case, it's actually housing all my pencils that I no longer use very often, BUT, as for my really good pencils, I'm working on two new solutions: one cheap and one which might be an expensive, custom build... I don't know about that one, tho. The cheap one involves... yes, toilet paper rolls! lol! It's not a case, but just a way for me to keep them all in one place so I can use them. I try to purge my art supplies every few years. Some years I get rid of more than others lol. I remember my first purge, I went through the entire house when I was about 12 and got rid of every single one of those “watercolor brushes” you get in Crayola and paint by numbers & such with the black nylon bristles. Lol, I considered them a waste of space useless “art supply” and tossed an entire school pencil case worth of them despite my mother’s objection. I had to explain I was only getting rid of the useless ones, not all the random little cheap ones we had collected that did in fact work ok.
