300 Weatherby is a good example of a good balanced cartridge. The bullet selection we have today far exceeds what was available when Roy Weatherby bought the 300 out!
@craigleibbrand77613 күн бұрын
Roy when he shot his famous Polar Bear,(1959) the 180gr Hornady bullets broke apart. The guide had to shoot it with the 375 H&H. This came from an employee at Weatherby. Gil Van Horn told Roy he should of used a 220gr. Nosler Partition bullet. I got that right from Gil when l was in Palmdale California.

Good groups! I got my dad a Vanguard in 300 Wthrby Mag about 20 years ago. It wasn't terrible on recoil. It had the thin 24" barrel. I am curious if it is that much faster than the 300 WM. Maybe next time you shoot groups run it over the chronograph and see what kind of velocities you are getting. Thank you sir. Stay safe out there.
@edwardabrams49728 ай бұрын
It’s about 200-300 fps faster then the 300 win mag in most loads and a lot more recoil too! Both great elk and bear cartridges 🙌

I must have been reading too many ballistic charts , if I remember correctly there is a cartridge called the 7.82 Warbird which is supposed to be just a touch faster than the 30-378 Weatherby recording velocities around the 3700 fps with a 150 g bullet , I've just done a quick google search and apparently it uses "undersize plated bullets so is probably more of a target rifle that and Elk or Moose gun . Still plenty of power in the 300 Weatherby and for a first time out with it I think those are pretty good groups and I'm sure the Elk won't notice the difference between a .5" and a .8" group . 300 Wby Mag is my favorite elk cartridge. I favor the 175 Federal Terminal Ascent, 180 Swift Scirocco II, and 180 Nosler Partition. Norma/ Weatherby Brass, RL 26 (if you can find it), Federal 215M. I built my rifle with a 24” barrel on a Mark V Action. Rifle is sub 1/3 MOA (5 shot group). 1st cold will go from 3,276 (175 Federal Terminal Ascent); (3,254 Nosler Partition); (3,206 Swift Scirocco II). It has never failed exit. It has gone thru both shoulder ball joints, and ribs of a 6X6 bull elk & both shoulder 3/4 scapula shot on a Orxy/Gemsbok). Phenomenal Cartridge. I carried a 300 Win Mag for years. Still love them. However, you don’t have to push the Weatherby to high pressure to get the exceptional performance. Don’ t be surprised if the Remington Ammo chronographs slower than either the Weatherby or Norma factory ammo. Has to with brass thickness and working pressures. Other ammo manufacturers usually load Weatherby Cartridges down due to some non- Weatherby rifles were chambered without the freebore. This protects them legally.

Great groups is not surprising. The average Weatherby is designed to be a hunting rifle, not a benchrest rifle. With the slender hunting barrel you can deliver outstanding accuracy with up to 3-4 successive shots. After that, it’s time to let it cool if you going for top accuracy. In a target style or custom built rifle this cartridge is a precision instrument. It’s performance on elk size game out to extreme ranges is the stuff of legends. From early on, Weatherby didn’t really market themselves to the “average Joe”. With the proprietary nature and cost of their rifles and ammo, they ended up pushing a lot of consumers away. Apparently they didn’t care about that. Many hunters and sportsmen became more accustomed to the larger and more “common”companies, such as Remington, Marlin, Savage, Winchester and so on. Perhaps a lot due to this is that many weren’t as familiar or knowledgeable about what Weatherby had out there since the 1940’s, or the performance that they offer. The 300 Weatherby has as much advantage over the 300 Winchester Mag as the Winchester has over the 30-06. In addition, the Weatherby only gives up around 90 fps at best to the 300 RUM. Weatherby used to load factory ammo much hotter, but with good reloading practice, there is not a real recognizable difference between the two in the field. Many enthusiasts that were anxiously awaiting the RUM’s arrival in 1999 were doing hand springs and barrel rolls after discovering the impressive performance of the new super magnum. Still today, some of those same fellows brag of the ultimate performance & accuracy they have achieved. At times it is as if the Weatherby never existed. Perhaps a few of those fellows never really knew of the big Weatherby or perhaps they weren’t truly familiar. Regardless of what the misunderstanding is, the preference of the RUM or the Weatherby may actually be judged by the rifle type you prefer. Certainly, it’s not truly based on a distinguishable performance advantage, regardless of anyone’s newly discovered love. Good examples of some of the same phenomenon can be seen with the lonely 7 MM Weatherby mag. Emerging in the early 1940’s and performance along with energy levels more likened to a 300 Winchester mag, you don’t hear or see anything of it in any of the big publications available at the time. When Remington first introduced their version, it wasn’t until the 1960’s! When that happened, it was like the first time anyone had seen such a thing. Perhaps many even asked the question, why the hell didnt someone invent something like this sooner? 😂 The 7MM Weatherby never truly caught on with the consumer market as some of their other cartridges did. Please don’t let it fool you! It is a dynamite cartridge!
