300 Win Mag SST bullet, 180 grain, sure did the job well with 73 grains of H4831sc on Elk and Mule deer...Went through both shoulders on a 5 point Bull Elk

The SST is designed for soft skinned medium game. Hornady says this on their website, they don’t recommend use on anything bigger than whitetail. So shooting it through 8 inches of boards and saying it failed because it came apart is like judging a hammer based on how well it can cut through a rope.

A better comparison would be the TTSX and hornady GMX

Thanks I didn't know that they didn't recommend it for anything bigger than Whitetail that's good to know!! I would like to compare those two if I can get my hands on some ammo I will.

Yeah, I hear, I’m in upstate NY as well and all the cupboards are bare!

Actually the website says game up to 1500 pounds. That's pretty much anything.

In the Hornady 2020 catalog, page 65, they say SST use from antelope to moose. Quite the contradiction?

That was one of the best videos I've watched thank you for this video. I think overall the Hornady SST might be the winner for North American game overall.

Thank you.. I think SST break apart too easily. I prefer Accubond or TTSX/LRX.

Great video, interesting results! Some may think in the realm of comparing these bullets, the Barnes 180 might be comparable to 200gr or heavier non copper bullets. I don’t know, just a thought. Thanks again

Everybody pushes these all copper bullets. Most hunting in North America is for whitetail deer. If you’re not careful using these super tough bullets on whitetail deer you’ll not get enough expansion. A whitetail isn’t very thick and it’s not very hard unless you hit the shoulder bones. Last year I shot a buck with a 338 win mag at 80 yards. I decided to go old school and used some 250 grain Hornady round nose interlock bullet with IMR 4350 powder at around 2700fps. I clipped one shoulder and came out behind the other shoulder. Then the bullet penetrated about 3” straight into a giant oak tree. So I got massive amounts of penetration but you couldn’t tell much difference between the entrance and exit holes. Yes that’s a very large rifle for a whitetail but it didn’t get to dump much of its energy when it hit the deer because there was nothing hard enough to make the bullet fully expand. I’ve used a 230 grain Hornady ELD-X at 2800fps. Very similar shot and the bullet expanded much much more and very clearly affected the deer more when it hit it. Still come out the other side but it left a much bigger hole. Whitetail deer does not require a very strong bullet at all. Sure seems to me like a softer bullet kills faster on a whitetail. And I’m speaking about mostly 30 calibers and up not a 223 or anything like that

Thanks. Well this video was not intended to be a whitetail deer ammo test. ELD-X explodes I don't like it. Very cheap bullet with thin jacket and no bonding. Good for punching paper, but its not a hunting bullet. Thanks for sharing.

You didn't measure expansion? Many say SST too violent for deer. Ruins too much meat?
@NYPrepper3 жыл бұрын
How can you measure expansion on an SST when the core separates from the jacket? It doesn't hold together at all, there is nothing holding the core to the jacket. Might be good for when the chinese invade, but that's it.

Honestly for a good comparison you should use ballistic gel because wood is so variable
@NYPrepper2 жыл бұрын
Its not that variable actually

When a bullet goes in and blow's up it does more damage and kills faster.
