Just returned from a Colorado elk hunt where my buddy ran a 300 Winmag 180 grain Federal power shock. One shot kill at 285 yards. I was next up to bat and harvested an elk at 320 yards with my 308 Winchester 165 grain federal fusion. Mine took two shots to drop her. “300 Winny has that dog in it.” Says my buddy.

Winchester actually had previously released the .264 Win Mag in 1959 along with the .338 Win Mag but with the concerns over barrel erosion the .264 never became popular. Then in 1962 Remington released the 7mm Rem Mag so then Winchester released the .300 Win Mag in 1963 so in a way the .300 was both a response to the failure of the .264 and as a response to the 7mm Rem Mag. The absolutely best shooting rifles that I've ever used was my late grandfather's old Model 70 .300 Winchester Magnum.

I do also find it funny that Ryan glossed over the fact the almost identical to 300 win mag 308 Norma mag had existed for 3 years prior to the Winchester creation.

@@ThatAngryJho-td3xe Yeah, the WinMag is a little, very little, faster with the same bullet, but they are so close. And it's basically the same cartridge design. Both are a shortened, necked-down, blown out, 375 H&H case.

My first high-powered rifle was a Remington 700 chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum, and at the young age of 10 I became a fan of the belted magnum. Somewhere around after 25 years and countless adventures with that old 700 that stacked deer like cord wood had passed, my dad asks me, "Matt (Hill Country Rifle) says he's shutting down production for the year and wants to know if we want a rifle built beforehand, so what caliber do you want?" I was not in a position at that time to be able to afford such an investment, and I told him so. His response, "I didn't ask if you could afford it, I asked what caliber you want." The 300 WSM hadn't been out long, and was gaining steam so I kicked that idea around for a moment, but, gentlemen, I couldn't imagine a caliber more befitting of what became my favorite build than a .300 Win Mag, and I never looked back. Over the last 20 years I have smoked monster porkers with that rifle on Brian Quaca's stompin' ground, hunted the vast bean fields and infinite power lines of SC, the black belt of Alabama, Hill Country Texas, and all sorts of places in between with that rifle, and it has never failed me. It doesn't ask questions, and it doesn't make apologies, but it is a tack driver, and will put meat on the ground if you can hold on for the ride. Each of my family seem to have their own pet cartridges, but the 300 Win Mag has to some degree become "the family cartridge", and, in my humble estimation, it truly is the king of the belted magnums. Thanks For this video, guys, it was quite enjoyable!

When I got my 300 Win Mag my justification was that it would be my “all around” rifle, sighted in with good 180 grain bullets and ready for any Colorado hunting at any time. This it did very well. With 180 grain Trophy Bonded Tip bullets, it was accurate and bullets mushroomed (and retained weight) beautifully on deer and elk, yet were tough enough that they would hammer antelope without blowing up a lot of meat. It was shootable enough that it was my son’s choice once he turned 12, and he use it every year after that. Great cartridge!

Excellent video. That backpack story at 15:00 is hilarious. I got an elk in NM back in October, and for the pack-out I used a Mystery Ranch, guide used an Exo Gear, and this Apache kid that came with us brought a Jansport bookbag and wore Twisted X moccasin shoes -- hilarious! 🤣 That kid was tough. I took the elk at around 100 yards with a 308 with 168 berger hybrid hunter, but it did take 2 shots. My 300 win mag with 180 grain corelokt has never needed a second shot except on black bear (to avoid loss in NC thickets).

My 300 WM is a late Ruger 77mk2 stainless with a zeiss conquest 3-9 scope. It in its original no frills stock, I bead blasted the barrel and action to knock the shine down, even with the heavier barrel profile it's just under 8 pounds and shoots the 165 Barnes tsx into half inch groups all day long... @@ChronicalsofAl I'll Grant it's a 26 versus a 24 inch barrel, but 76 grains of h1000 pushes a 215 burger at 2970 out of my 300 Win Mag. 77.7 grains h1000 pushes a 215 Burger out of my Bergara 300 PRC at 2950. Ignorance is speaking without knowing what you're talking about. The chamber in a 300 PRC is bigger than the chamber in the 300 win therefore you will generate more pressure with less powder in a 300 Winchester Magnum, generating higher velocity with less powder. I have 2 - Interarms MX and a TC Encore. I hunt almost exclusively with the single shot with full confidence one shot will do it. 165 gr Barnes punches through every thing and my recoil on the TC is not noticeable to me when hunting. Blacktails whitetails, elk, and pronghorns with 300WM. And I suffer from buying rifles such as 6.5 CM and now 7mm PRC that I have yet to hunt with. There is no blowing apart any animal regardless of size. Adding the 165 pokes through the magical 3000 fps with some ease and barrel replacement for my encore is really easy if needed.

My DRT (Dead Right There) Rifle, Remington 700 BDL in 300 WM. 180 grain Barnes TSX at just over 3100. Deer, elk and several black bear. Never been able to recover a bullet. Always complete pass through. Had one bear that ran about 15 yards with 2 chambers of his heart blown open before he piled up. I started out with a Remington 721 in 30-06 and then a Ruger M77 300 WM, then this 700. That was in the mid 90's. I haven't looked back and it's never left me wanting. That combo dropped a mule deer buck at 837 lased yards and a cow elk at 812 lased yards. A Hogue stock helps with the recoil quite a bit. Highly recommended.

I’ve heard some say that the belt adds support to the case head during pressure but I’ve also heard some say that it’s so little added strength that it’s negligible. Can you guys shed some light on this. I’m skeptical of how much support it could add. I’ve always thought it was for headspacing ever since I learned what headspacing was, even though the .300 Win Mag headspace’s off the shoulder. I guess it’s just kind of a holdover from the .375 H&H that it was based on. I’ve never had the privilege of shooting a .300 Win Mag… I don’t hunt but I do have a .30-06 that my dad left me. He didn’t hunt either but just had one to have a rifle to shoot for recreation. I honestly never thought the recoil of that was anywhere near what it was made out to be. I’ve heard many people (who aren’t really gun people) mind you complain about the recoil of .30-06 or larger but for my money, it’s not bad at all. The heaviest recoiling thing I’ve ever felt were 3 1/2in magnum slugs from a friend’s gun and high brass 2 3/4in turkey loads which I still have a couple of. They’re downright unpleasant to shoot. In my experience they kick significantly harder than 00 buck or slugs in standard length shells.
@diggernash1
@diggernash1 Жыл бұрын
Negligible. Still best to determine max pressure by measuring case head expansion. Keep it to half a thou or less. Brass lasts, you don't trim as often(if you bump the shoulder correctly), and you give up very little performance.

The 300 WinMag is so powerful. They had to add a belt around it to keep it from blowing out at the bottom. At least that’s what they used to say to sell more cartridges. The belt was just to help with head spacing and though adding material at the base to the shell, is going to add some strength, I Think it would be so minimal that it’s not worth even considering.

Keep in bar / safe a Ruger .243, a gorgeous custom Mauser action 6 MM Remington, Howa .25-'06, Savage .270, Howa 7 MM Rem Mag, Howa .30-'06, and a classic Browning BAR in .300 Win Mag. And I do have two fine Swedish Mausers in the original 6.5, one a rifle, one a carbine. Yet do I sit alone in the dark wringing my hands and trying to stay away from Gun Broker . . . Yep. My first book on long range shooting was written by Ryan Cleckner, formerly of the 1st Ranger Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment in the GWOT. He carried the M24 in .300 WM. He could dial distance on elevation from DOPE. Then, he would the crosshairs left or right edge of target zone into the wind and get a hit. This worked to about 500 yards. Most engagements were 300 yards or less. I have a colleague who swears by the .300 WM for deer and I know he took an Aoudad Sheep with it. So, even though my do all cartridge is the sizzling 7 mm PRC, I could also see the .300 WM as the go to. In fact, the 7 PRC is comparable to the .300 WM.

They should have included marketing perspective on this cartridge. It would give good insight to new cartridges and how they are born. Weatherby is the one that started the magnum craze. There were powerful magnums for elephant hunting already but Weatherby induced magnumitis to the common hunter. Remington and Winchester jumped onboard and guys were studying ballistics charts better then they ever studied anything in school and the arguments began. 7 mm rem mag guys said it shoots flatter that the 300 win mag and the 300 win mag delivers a bigger punch. Gun writers such as Craig Boddington were all about use enough gun. He touted the 8mm rem mag at the time and he unlike most people traveled and had exotic hunts where it made sense to use a cartridge that would give an advantage in case the shot placement wasn't perfect. Many hunters jumped onboard as they were young had their whole lives ahead of them and thought they too would travel to Africa, Alaska, or wherever and needed to buy one of these. Very very few ever did go on a guided hunt away from home and found out they could get buy just fine with the 99 savage in 300 savage that was in the closet. Lazeroni came out with his cartridges and then Remington and Winchester popped off with the short magnums and Ultra magnums. At one time the 300 savage was considered good Elk medicine and the 30 06 was even better. Gun manufacturers, and ammunition makers alike deliberately get in the heads of sportsmen blurring the line between want and need. Sure there are real benefits to the magnums and they have a place but just like the knife guys who practice handling them and swinging them around wanting the balance of the knife to be just right, they likely will never need them. Now there is a big push for the long range hunting fad where people are taking unethical long shots at game animals and the gun, equipment, and ammo companies are raking in the big bucks. Do you want to feed this thing?

I built a 6lb, 300 RUM😮. All carbon with TI Summit action. It's threaded, but no brake. It thumps, but I don't care. I built it for Black Bear in big cuts. I may brake it, using hearing protection. I built a 6.5lb 375 Ruger, and that thumps even more without a brake. Right at my recoil threshold off the bench! I've started another build. A do most gun out to 400. It will be a lightweight with 20-inch barrel. No brake. My idea is light for the mountains, short for black timber, and able to take deer, hogs, black bear, moose, and elk, come what may. Despite recoiling, I want more than enough gun. I was going with the 7 PRC, but I am now favoring the 300 Win Mag. The 7 better in the wind, but I kind of think 30 cal and up frontal area might be better on bigger game. I know both rounds will lose velocity, but I believe they'll still outperform non-magnums. This vid is pushing me towards the old 300😅

I just picked up a model 70 in 300 wm and love the gun. It kicks pretty good but at 100 yards with factory ammo I have sub moa grouping. Can’t wait for my elk hunt this fall

So instead of a 30-06, why not go one down to 270 and one up to a 300? Gives a nice wide spread coverage of almost everything.

I think it would be interesting to do a cartridge comparison between the 300 Savage and the 308 Winchester. Pretty similar but the fact that the Savage came out almost 30 years earlier is impressive

Basically, if you’re hunting with a 300 Win Mag, you take a shot, and you don’t get the results you expected, it’s your fault not the gun’s fault.

Got a Savage 116 in 300 wm. Aside from the light plastic stocking making the recoil stupid-violent, the cartridge itself is very impressive. Used it on elk, deer, and even a pronghorn. With the right bullet and placement it can take thin-skinned game without significant meat loss. At the same time it can drop elk and moose. Probably a bit light for big bears but everything else on the continent is in real trouble inside 500 yards.

Like you guys touched on, the 60's really were a magical time in firearms. On one side, you had the classic European firearm/cartridge developers, the safari gun makers like H&H, Kynoch etc, still being relevant but at the same time starting to fade away with the collapse of European colonial holdings. Propellants had also made huge jumps during WW2- consider the M1 Carbine and .30 Carbine as the first cartridge specifically requiring that it's loaded with non-corrosive powders- reducing the need for the sloping, rounded, art nouveau cases like .375 H&H that needed to be that way to pack properly with cordite. Similarly, on the US side, a lot of people were still loading their own cartridges, and you had gunwriters who were actual madmen and gunsmiths, think Cooper, Ackley, Keith and O'Connor. But perhaps most importantly, there was a lot of people who'd be trained in firearms manufacturing due to the war, plus a shitload of surplus- both in terms of dirt cheap, high-quality actions flooding the market and surplus machine tools while the sword makers switched back to plowshares. These new people, also, had mostly been trained on what we now consider standard bullets- the jacketed spitzer on top of smokeless- bringing a new set of eyes to a set of development that had been mostly controlled by black powder and the "Nitro express" crowd. And then, just to tie it all together, you've got European riflemakers absolutely willing to do whatever some American asks for as long as he's got the cash to keep their companies afloat, and NATO's effectively unlimited military budget. It was literally the absolute perfect playground for cartridge development. Also, hell yeah for keeping the Carl list in the background.

I have 308, 30-06, and a 300 win mag. The 308 hsquvarna and 30-06 remington both came from both my grandpa's. And i can say with alot of faith that whatever i hit with my 300 win mag that i bought in general, will get the job done, or put the hurt on due it verisitility and power. I believe there is a sweet spot or balence between using the 30 caliber bullet. And even when used in WW2 for the first time.

I got my first rifle in Ruger Mark ‼️ stainless steel All Wether inn 300 win mag is my favorite caliber I just got new round for Elk and Deer 300 PRC but still like the 300wm what it can do and price for ammunition 🤔 and to repack my own rounds is mucho cheeper to make. In the high Desert I need yards and energy at 500 yards if I need it with no trees the deer will see you from a mile away. I don't like muzzle brakes at all just don't see the point is so loud for one shot hunting and the range don't like the concussion of it doesn't feel good and the person next to you Damn they feel it. My son has one one his LR-6.5 is on a small round is loud. Great show on 300 win mag.

Subject idea: perhaps cover the logic of light fast bullets, vs long heavy bullets, couple with efficiency and on target energy. Maybe help some guys understand cartridge selection and design, and why the 1960's rounds are fundamentally different than modern PRC style cartridges.

If you can handle the recoil or tame it with a brake, 300 win mag is probably the best all around cartridge. 300 weatherby and up get to be too big and you start asking too much of the bullets with that much speed. I moved to the WSM master race mainly because I have a Tikka, but the winny killed several big game animals for me very well. 200 grain eld-x at 2950 was no slouch. Knocked a muley down at 660 with it.

I do like them. Never owned one and thought about getting one in a tikka t3x . But that will probably be my next one. Have to get the 6.5 creed lined out first . Then probably the 257 wby mag. Then, hopefully, after that, I will get one or a 338 win mag. Not sure yet.

2nd that! I also have the T3x in .300winmag and have taken antelope to elk with it. Swapped out the original pad for a limbsaver and added the more vertical pistol grip. Recoil is no issue to me. Using 200 grain eld-x has made for clean, non explosive kills out to 500yd. I love it.

In regards to recoil... I'm shooting a new Ruger African in 300 with the factory brake and it kicks less than my dad's old Remington 700 in 30-06 which weighs at least a couple pounds more than the Ruger! I still need to try it without the brake but it's so comfortable to shoot now. I was exciting a destroyed shoulder but my turkey shotgun is worse than this cartridge.
