Күн бұрын

Lake District wild camping - First wild camp in my new Mountain Laurel Designs Duomid tent at 3000ft on Ill Crag near Scafell Pike, in the Lake District.
My route took me from Dungeon Ghyll heading up Rossett Gill past Angle Tarn, Esk Hause and on to Ill Crag. A still night with a sky full of stars. My return route was via Esk Pike, Bowfell, and Crinkle Crags and a look at the bad step. My Strava stats recorded a 16 mile walk with 4900ft of ascent. Couldn’t resist a cooling dip at the end. Such a beautiful day.
Many thanks for watching - Dave

Enjoyed that walk Dave. Some great views and perfect weather. The cloud adds to the atmosphere. There is a shorter diversion round the bad step. At 28.50 (in the vid) as if going up take the right hand side around a large block which brings you out above the bad step. Can take this in descent too from the summit of Crinkle Crags. More interesting than the usual diversion. Anyway, great vid as usual 👍

@@TheSoloSummiteer was just thinking about the condensation in your tent. Could be because it has the single apex where the air might tend to condense at the narrow top and run down? Dome tents may allow more ventilation and the air is more widely distributed? Either that or it’s your hot air? 😂

The Duomid is normally good as far as condensation is concerned. My last camp had rain but the inside stayed dry. I have the old model which has a vent which looks larger than the new type. I doubt that would matter, though. As others have said, if the conditions favour dew formation, the fabric will get wet. BTW, I carry a few titanium nail pegs for rocky ground. They stand up to hammering into the ground.

Great video once again. Re: the condensation. I was out on the same night as you, but over on Dow Crag. I've never experienced so much condensation as I did that night. My tent was absolutely soaked. I think it was purely down to the drop in temperature as it was warm in the evening, but dropped heavily over night and into the morning. There was a lot of cloud/mist too, so perhaps a high humidity? Anyway, I think its something that would occur in any tent on that night. Cheers, take care.

Dupuytrens contracture (the viking disease), it means you have some Viking DNA in you. Some famous Viking (cannot remember who right now) who suffered from bent fingers had his hand struck in battle and it fixed his hand. Hi Dave. Can I get some advice. I am going out on Tuesday for my first wild camp(weather permitting😂). Not bad for 67. Have extensive experience in the Lakes mountains but not camped in 40 years. Can’t decide whether to do a longish walk over the two days with a camp, or go simple, short walk to a good viewpoint, short return, concentrating on the camping logistics, heavier sack etc? Any thoughts? Can you recommend good easy access mountain summits that are good for this first sortie, and hopefully with great views, great sunsets and no people!😂😂.

@@ianbarnett hi Ian. Mid week forecast looks good currently. I’d definitely take the easier option being your first outing. My Illgill Head camp was below 2000ft with great views. Maybe an option for you?

Hi Dave. Just wanted to let you know I did it. Tuesday night! The weather was phenomenal. Scorchio! Cool breeze on top though.In the end I went up Dalehead from Honister. Hot, steep and heavy! Carried 35lbs… lessons learnt there. It was a terrific experience! 360 deg views. Didn’t sleep… cramp most of the night. Brilliant sunrise. Thanks for your channel. Really helped me to get out and do it. I just need to make the vlog… not sure about that. Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Classic injury comment, don't know what it is, but no pain during exercise! The endorphins released during exercise are great pain suppression hormones. As I get older, I rely on them to get me where I want to go and continue muscle strengthening exercises, to help combat muscle wastage as you age. It's approx 1% increasing to 6% muscle wastage a year from 40 to 65 years. It's worth researching the endocrine system and how to combat age related muscle wastage to keep doing what you enjoy.

Damn I’m 70 soon. Am I a gonner already? Actually I just did Helm Crag and survived but I was wondering how I might fare. Any advice for us older folks?

@@JRLNeal Hi John, I thought I'd replied already.... clearly exercise doesn't help my memory! You're only a few years ahead of me and still very active and that's the main thing. The bit that gets forgotten or not understood is the muscle mass loss due to reduction in the Endocrine (Hormone) system, that starts to reduce around 40 years at about 1% and increases to around 6% at 65. Clearly a lot of muscle, strength and metabolising power to loose a year. I lift weights in a structure training routine, 5/6 times a week to help keep the muscle, not easy if you like a lot of walking too, but you've got to do something. I've been going to gyms for fifty years, but made the decision before the pandemic, to get equipment at home and train there. That's fine if you know what you are doing, I'm a Physiotherapist of 26 years and treat a lot of patients that have injuries from bad training techniques, it's worth getting some advise from a knowledgeable personal trainer, not a youngster, or they'll just get you pounding the treadmill, that is ok for cardio, but doesn't help with muscle loss.

@@mikefaulkner10 thanks Mike for this very comprehensive answer. I’m sure it will be very useful for other people too. I try and keep reasonably fit mostly by gardening and cycling. Check out my KZbin channel, I just cycled about 12 miles today. I am restricted a little bit by mildly arthritic knees and a stiff shoulder, but I was very pleased that last week I managed Helm Crag without too much trouble, even the descent wasn’t too bad. My BMI is way out of kilter, apparently I ought to be 8 foot two. Shall I do stretching exercises?
@mikefaulkner10

@@JRLNeal Hi John, stretching is a great idea. It's use your full range of movement or loose it, arthritis or not. I have Osteoarthritis in my back, neck and pretty well everywhere from an active life, movement is key to controlling the spur growth and keeping the endorphins flowing, for pain suppression.

@@TheSoloSummiteer thanks very much for the reply. I've actually already got the 3ful Lanshan 1 plus which I use as much summer/ fine weather tent, and the scarp 1 for my winter - I'm touring with the idea of selling both and purchasing the duomid but I'm needing a solid inner for it but bigger that the 3ful inner.
