Hi I the problem is not the Mechanic... the problem is sometimes the chooses we make, you have to be near a big city and go to a proper mechanic and a chop that the people know what they are doing... fixing the bike in Portugal for sure will be less expensive that do it in Germany but you have to know the right people... I admire you traveling and trying to comunicate without knowing the language of the locals... is a big adventure ( for example if you were at Lisbon or Oporto you will found a Honda shop or other were the peole speak a proper english and with the right skills to give you the righ diagnostic) in Alentejo... is a complete different history ;)

Bro check your cam chain tensioner .It may be not applying enough tension to the cam chain/timing chain. If the culprit is the tensioner then change it asap. Otherwise you can encounter with a catastrophic engine failure . It can lead to the slip of the timing chain and can bent your valves. I think the sound is from the slacked timing chain hitting the chain guides.

Hey Marc, so sad the honda isnt running good. But at least you are in good health, and hey, a 1 cylinder bike that old and with 80-90.000kms(?)on it, nothing wrong with it needing a little TLC now. Here is a little story that maybe makes you feel better, in 2012 I drove from Denmark to France on my old honda africa twin 750 rd04, I just got to France, parked at a gas station for a short rest, went to the bathroom and came out to see my africa twin ON FIRE and all my luggage ON FIRE. The bike burned down and so did my luggage. I did have my passport and money on me. Fu** that was a bad holiday. Then rushed home by train and asap bought new gear and took off on the same trip 3 days later but now on my honda fjs 400 silverwing scooter. Kind of a different experience. But the scooter was a better choice overall for a France trip 😄 Had more fun than on my africa twin. Best of luck to you and the honda, looking forward to the next video! Cheers

The tensioner has a built in sprague clutch that slips as the engine heats up. You will need it regardless, it is easy to replace. It is just normal wear for that type of tensioner. The pigs that you saw were the original "Pata Negra" pigs which are used for the world's best (and most expensive) cured ham the famous "Jamón de bellota", and the correct term for that kind of farm is an "hacienda". In Spain, the term "Pata Negra" is used to refer to not only the best ham, but also to anything that is the absolute best of anything The reason the oranges tasted very acidic is because they are effectively the wild, original oranges. They are used for eating, but not uncooked. It is these oranges that are used for marmalade, and they are correctly referred to as "Seville" oranges.

Hey Marc. Can't be easy trying to enjoy your travels but all the while having to worry about the bike.. I genuinely think if it was going to give you trouble, as in the timing chain slipped or snapped, it probably would have by now at this stage. You know from the last mechanic that the chain is not overly loose on the gears. Its not stretched too much, so it's most likely a lazy chain tensioner. You've done all you can for her without major engine teardown. Go for it man. Switch off from the constant listening to that noise and enjoy your trip..what will be, will be.

ive had the same problem before on my xr650l (next gen of dominator), i just changed my timing chain and problem went away.. good luck!
@davidcolin65192 жыл бұрын
@@MarcTravels It's almost unheard of for these timing /cam chains to break, they're Mutiplex for just this reason. A multiplex chain doesn't just have the 2 sides of the chain with rollers at either end of the span, they have about 4 or 5 spans in parallel, so it is really is virtually impossible for them to break. Not knowing the km of the bike, it's impossible to know whether it is the chain or the tensioner which needs changing, but the tensioner is a very common part to fail. Honda never bothered to fix the problem, so pretty much every RFVC engine eventually has the tensioner fail. It rarely makes the news because the magazines etc. don't want to lose the advertising revenue that Honda provide, and because the problem only appears when the bike is onto its 2nd, 3rd or 4th owner, so it is never a warranty thing for the big H. This problem was finally solved when the company nearly went broke because of warranty claims when they introduced the VF750 and VF400 series of water cooled engines. Nobody wanted the chain driven cams because they were an absolute mess. That is the reason why the VFR750 and later models had/have gear driven cams. But the tensioner was still a problem as late as the CBR1000s. I really don't know if the company ever cured the problem, it would appear that they didn't with the XRs. But I did have several of bikes from that generation of Hondas and it was something that Honda knew about but never changed. I never understood wtf they didn't change the design, but it was something that left me with some very, very sour memories.

@@MarcTravels price of mind, decision made.. on with business.. PS.. your Honda's an 8.5:1 comp ratio.. 92 octane.. any higher is pointless.. don't be fooled by the marketing of "premium".. there's NO difference in "quality".. it's just the octane rating.. lower octane fuel has a higher & faster burn rate.. 98 has a flash retarder that raises the pre-ignition/detonation point of the fuel for high compression engines.. yours isn't.. you'll actually get better running on the 92 & maybe better economy too.. it's a low compression engine to be able to use any petrol.. consult your in-house kiwi mate.. she'll put you right 👌
@rialisayumang42832 жыл бұрын
the fact that the motor still runs, it means the chain is not broken, the only problem is that "loud ticking sound" that comes out when the engine gets hot and eventually ticking comes out even when engine cold, this is the reason why you may not be able to see this problem earlier on the chain when you check it is because you wont be able to inspect the chain while engine is hot, you need to cool off the engine first then the chain will be tight again. These chains stretches little by little in time while using it, engine heat stretches it even further thats why they put chain tensioner on it to compensate for expansion and contraction of this chain. But all these parts has its own limits, once the tensioner couldnt tighten the chain anymore (because the chain is too long already) this is the time that the chain will slap on nearby parts creating loud ticking sound coming from the engine. Among the parts of the valve train, timing chain is the most vulnerable because of the counteracting forces acting on it and yet it consists of so many moving parts and each moving parts (pins and rollers) are considered failure points. Its really hard to tell whats causing the noise from your engine, i was just sharing my experience with my bike, i was even surprised when we compared the old chain to the new chain side by side, almost no difference (at least from my untrained eye) but when the new chain was installed, ticking is gone.., it will take good mechanic to look at this and fix this kind of problem.. again, good luck to you...

Also keep taking note of the noise, and see how it progresses, do not ignore if it gets significantly worse, if you decide to continue your journey. No guarantees in life, but chances are been a honda of a generation that we're over engineered you will be fine. There are some great videos on youtube of how to change the above parts. You are in a wonderful part of the world, doing what you enjoy, just enjoy the whole experience. Marc that is not only the cam chain tensioner, for sure you have a valve train issue. It’s common with this old Honda heads. Until you visit a mechanic try to find the STP oil additive that is thick like honey and put some in it with the oil hot. Don’t poor the hole thing because your clutch might be slipping. This STP is a small blue metal can that opens like food can from top. You should see a significant decrease in the engine sound which will also indicate the issues I mentioned . Best of luck !! Safe roads

you dont want to hide or mask problem of the the sound if there is a real problem, STP is garbage unless the engine is on its least legs with low compression burning oil,
@krosstsp16982 жыл бұрын
@@westho7314 unless you are a mechanic or an engineer you shouldn’t comment. Mark already stated that he would continue driving with the problem, the specific STP is pretty good at what it does for years and I only suggested it in order for him to be able to continue just a little longer and as a plus to point out the extra issues of sound does get less (which it will) If anything upgrading the oil viscosity briefly raises the oil pressure. I would suggest you “study” before commenting and try interpreting in your mind our comment for what they are not for what you think they are. By they way this STP would preserve a bit more wear from the valve train wear surfaces and all other ones. If besides the cam chain his valve train is already “grinding” the shavings in the engine will already have cause damages to parts that should be replaced during repair or engine overhaul. Thank you

You seem disappointed when the sound does not present itself, Since the sound seems to come & go whatever is causing it means it is probably in the early stages of accelerating wear, because it does sound healthy most the time & hasn't progressed or gotten worse or let loose yet, if it does let loose it will cost you far more than just replacing cam chain, tensioner & related parts as needed. Don't know how many KMs on your bike but the tensioner may have a single component being made of plastic, a weak link that requires replacement at certain maintenance intervals A chattering clutch could also be he culprit, If planning on riding 10 more days to Berlin just keep your RPM's between gears down, go through the gears slow & smooth and avoid any hard acceleration. Large single cylinder engines like your bike has are known to be noisy and do vibrate a lot more than a twin & multi cylinder engines, the extra torque on a large displacement thumper is especially hard on clutch, drive chain & cam chains especially when ridden/ accelerated as hard and aggressive as most riders do on such machines as your Dominator, Vibration can loosen external fairings , frame & component bolts, nuts and fasteners of which anything loose can cause unusual rattles & noises outside the engine at certain RPMs and mimick internal engine sounds with a distinct pattern appearing at different RPMs. A pre -ride check of drive chain tension & lube, basic nuts & bolts & fasteners being checked for tightness, oil level check and such maintenance should always be done daily before or after riding any distance on or off road for extended time,, only takes a few minutes to do a pre ride check. A good protocol to follow in preventing potential problems and saving alot of money from simple neglect. I am sure there is someone on KZbin or on a Honda Dominator enthusiast website/forum online who has likely made a video/ tutorial on changing out the cam chain, tensioner & related parts on your engine, & made Videos on other maintenance aspects like clutch replacement, valve adjustments, brake pads, all the maintenance basics that can be repaired & replaced by the average rider for just the expense of parts, with basic tools, a little aptitude & patience & all accomplished without any major engine teardown or shop mechanic to squeeze your wallet..

Hi Marc, I've been following along on your awesome trip for awhile now and I'm loving it !! I know everybody's trying to help you out and give you some advice, so I have a quick question for you: Have you ever heard an old Suzuki DR650 or an old Yamaha XT600 idling?? They rattle like 10 times louder than yours, yet they keep running forever (same issue as yours, loose/bad chain tensioner). I used to own an XL600R (same RFVC motor as yours) and I can tell you this: just make sure you're running a good 10w-40 oil (mineral, NOT synthetic) and you can make it back to beautiful Berlin with no worries !!! Since those guys in Porto found no issues with the cam gear and the chain itself, then you got nothing to worry about (yes, that rattle would drive me nuts too, I know...). Now, if you really want to get it fixed, all you have to do is have the tensioner replaced (no need to drop the engine for that). Look up a video called "Honda XR650L, how to remove & install the cam chain tensioner" on KZbin to see how it's done (can't put the link itself here, but I can email it, if necessary). Keep calm, and keep the awesome videos coming, Marc !!!!

Of course, I'm not in your shoes, but I would have the motorcycle repaired at a reputable motorcycle shop in Spain. Paying in Spain or in Germany to have it fixed won't make any difference at the end, and you would have peace of mind after the repair is done. More than likely, it's the cam chain tensioner spring going away, but it could also be only a valve adjustment (another very likely cause). That said, it could be another dozen reasons, some of them without any consequences down the road, but if it's caused by the cam chain tensioner, and it complketely breaks down and throws the cam shaft out of timing, it could bring some very expensive repairs. Likewise for a worn drive shaft bearing or wrist pin bearing.

I guess it might be the cam chain tensioner. Can't think of anything else likely to come and go again. Not sure if it's oil fed but I'd pull it out and check incase it is and the seal is damaged. You may be able to frig it with a spring if you can't replace it, as an emergency repair.

If its not too late, may I suggest when visiting another mechanic, don't offer them the prior diagnosis, let them give you their diagnosis, I'm no mechanic, but to me, that still sounds like valve noise. I hope your luck turns for you mate, one thing I am impressed by is your attitude when things are not going right, you just carry on with minimal fuss.

The sounds of loose tappets and a loose camchain ( the slack side of the chain slapping against the chain guide ) do sound the same . Checking the valve clearance on this engine is so easy no one could get this wrong . Ask yourself this if it was valve noise , how does the clearance between the tappet and valve change from loud ( excessive clearance ) to normal ( correct clearance ) . This is not possible . But the auto tensioner on the camchain can fail . When it is sounding normal the tensioner is lock in place and the guide is pushed up against the cam chain ( no slap ) . When the rattle is there the tensioner has slipped allowing the chain slack to slap against the guide and spring .

Very good advice and I agree. If it is valve noise, checking clearances while the noise is around should show up on a valve clearance being too big. Pulling the head off that bike is not a big deal.
@stevemartin55812 жыл бұрын
@@barrylauth6838 The head does not need to come off this model to replace the tensioner only the top rocker cover . The one removed for inspection in video 20 . Once the OEM part is sourced it is a simple fix . He is reluctant to stay in one place to have it repaired , because Of the time this could take . Nor has he found a competent mechanic further alone his route were the part could be pre ordered and installed when he got there . The noise it makes would be very stressful . I have no experience how long this engine can be operated in this present state without causing damage . I am interested to see how it all pans out . With motor bike travel the adventure only starts when you have problems solve .
