Now what? Data is gone, but nothing is fixed. Except for my brakes, but I hardly use them anyways because of the engine regen;) thanks Franklin Motorcycles in Dublin for the new brake fluid and the beanie and for taking the time to let them have a look and plugin EVE to a computer. So now I have an electric motorcycle with reset Data that I have to learn all over again and even though nobody really said it out loud, I’m pretty sure I have a broken battery and a soon to be broken electric motor…but that won’t stop me from having a great time. I will keep moving…

Firmware Version 18 - faulty SOC calculations or magic charging The latest issue introduced via a firmware update was not limited to European bikes. This time a bug was introduced that caused miscalculations in the SOC or State of Charge values on the display. On it’s own not that big of a deal but the bike will reduce power and even shut down completely as this value decreases. So many users reported a limited range and even shut downs in the middle of a ride. To add to the frustration these bikes would slowly recalculate and increase their SOC value when parked and keyed OFF. Hence this was mockingly called magic charging. I never took this firmware version 18 so to date I never experienced the problem myself. Luckily by now an update is available with firmware version 19 being released that solves this problem. When writing this article the firmware versions on their website aren’t updated yet. The below release information is what we received on EMF from a dealer. It’s the peril of buying a used bike. Blown motor and wrecked engine are probably why the original owner sold the bike….(and perhaps couldn’t be fixed under warranty too). Given your profile, promoting e- motorcycles, and Zero in particular, I would think that Zero would want to do all they can to sort out the issues with the bike. I really hope they see their way to doing that. On another tack, we all love getting a video every day, but don't burn yourself out mate. You need sleep and time for yourself too. Agree! Amazing rhythm but you've got a long way to go, so don't burn the candle at both ends. Cheerfulness is important to keep up on a long trip like this, and it's a pity you have to worry about the bike all the time as well, next to normal charging a d video production. Well at least the data analysis will help to make it less of a guessing game what's wrong. Safe travels!

Marc, As others have suggested, perhaps a workshop that specializes in electric motor repair could replace your seal and/or bearings. Germany is probably a good place to find such a workshop. In the meantime, it could be a long time before loss of lubricant is enough to damage the bearing, so you may get a lot of riding before it needs to be fixed or replaced. I hope you battery issue can also be resolved. With the warranty still in force, Zero should be required to fix it. I appreciate your videos. You do a great job with your videography and commentary. Um einen Eindruck von seiner Gesamtkapazität zu bekommen, könntest Du EVE mal komplett leer fahren (bis sie abschaltet) und sie dann an einer Haushaltssteckdose mit einem Energiekostenmessgerät aufladen, bis sie erneut abschaltet. Wenn EVE mehr als 13 kWh Energie aufnimmt, würde ich mir keine großen Sorgen machen.

I guess this is why we need early adopters of new tech but it’s really not looking good at this moment in time for electric motorcycles. Hopefully things will change soon before we are all forced into this. It’s absolutely clear that we do not have the infrastructure in the UK to make the switch anytime soon. @@IrishBog I mean the worst albeit most annoying thing seems to be the reliability of the infrastructure. If you are not an iron butt, you will probably take a break every 200kms or so anyway, when you are touring. So don't see such a big issue with the range.

Well, when you read all the comments since he started the journey with this bike, you can actually see people, that have been once VERY interested in such a bike, dropping their interest ..because what you see is trouble ..always trouble with this kind of bike. Either it is finding a way to charge it or the trouble with the lifespan of a Li-Ion battery by itself or with different temperatures. The tech is just not there yet where it needs to be. There is nothing reliable about "E" (car or bike) anywhere yet. And Li-Ion is the wrong path anyway.

Some thoughts Marc, the engine will be ok as long as you keep the oil topped up to the correct level, please check the drive belt tension is correct, if it's too tight it can damage the drive shaft bearings, fingers crossed your battery is covered by the 5 year warranty...Good luck! :)

Hi Marc, regarding that oil leak, I believe that the seal should be replaceable. The question is, how complicated is it to replace it? At first sight, it looks like it could be replaced from the outside without engine disassembly. In any case, I doubt that you have to replace the complete engine because of the single seal. Try to find some specialized EV shop (not the dealer) that repairs EVs to check your battery and that seal.

It's not the responsibility of the manufacturer, especially if someone bought a 2nd hand vehicle. He might can go via civil court and use EU protection laws of it comes to goods and services, as I would argue that the previous owner might was aware of the issues and withhold the information knowingly.

Hi Marc, I have a similar behavior with the range and battery level displayed on Eve's little sister (SR/F 21). Very little projected range (1km per %) and magic charging : I'm typically consuming 20% for 20km, then 6 to 8% magically appears 15 minutes after stopping the bike. I only got her 2 weeks ago but this has been consistent every ride. I really hoped this was a kind of agressive battery management software feature that could be mitigated quickly, but your (and other's) experience shows otherwise. Time to hit the workshop I guess... Keep it up buddy, you are amazingly inspiring ❤✌ (and take some well deserved rest too from time to time, we don't want anything to happen to you due to a lack of sleep)

When I saw the flat cables and the connectors when they removed the cover I know it will not last 10 years like ICE bikes… Most trouble with cars are electronics, and specially the connectors… You prove us that it is to early to adapt EV’s. You are doing pioneers work, when ZERO does not fix your problems they will see a major drop in sales…

Keep up the great work it is great watching your trip. With regards to the bikes motor as far as I am aware there is no oil in the motor so what you are seeing is going to be grease. Best to wipe it clean and just monitor it. I have the same bike and have had a small amount form in the same place over 2000 miles but I and not riding as far as you. I think that the battery issue is more likely a firmware problem and Zero should be trying to help you with this problem.

Really sorry to hear about the engine battery issues. But yet again the best thing to do for the environment is to ride a ICE bike until it falls apart / 15+ years. Not buy an electric that takes far more emissions to produce and then needs to be thrown away after 3-7 years. Volvo recently had to announce (legal ass covering I’m guessing) that it takes 70k miles of driving before the emissions saved match the extra emissions needed to produce the car and batteries. Look it up

Marc, I've been in almost the same position as you. Purchased a used Zero that had a battery BMS issue (battery management system). The bike had 1 year left on the battery warranty and Zero stepped up to the plate to replace the BMS at no cost to me. If the issue you are having with the battery turns out to be a defective battery or battery related part, I'm sure Zero will step up and fix it for you. I also assume that Markus was a Zero rep in Europe/UK. So you will probably be fine. As for the oil around the motor shaft, I don't think there is oil in the motor. Just grease on the shaft bearings. Maybe the previous owner thought to spray some lubricant around the shaft?

Oh man, that's really heart-wrenching. I agree with the other comments that Zero should help you out. My personal opinion is that you should think about upgrading to a newer bike with bigger battery and maybe Zero can make you a great deal on that. The new SR/F looks the same, but has a 15.6 kWh battery unlockable to about 17 kWh. Plus obviously you'll get new everything (battery, brakes, belt). That reminds me, you should consider getting a spare drive belt. If it breaks, you're done, but it's easy to replace by any motorcycle shop or even yourself with the right tools. Anyway, when you get to that point and Zero isn't helping, consider a GoFundMe. I think you have so many followers now you'll be surprised about the generosity of your community. I would definitely be in for some $/€.

I would bet that if they discover a battery issue they will swap what you gave for a new battery since you have a large audience and you are driving their machine giving them free advertisement. Hi Marc, Loving your trips around the UK Sorry to hear about the battery and "engine". I know you mentioned the bike is out of warranty though the battery still has a further 2 years and hopefully Zero will see this as a huge advertising boost and help you out as much as they possibly can. But if not do you think you could have any claim against the seller if it can be established that these faults should have been corrected before the bike was sold to you??

Marc, I enjoy all your trip videos - very entertaining. The problem with all EV's is the battery life. Anyone that owns a laptop knows that battery capacity starts to decline as soon as you start using it. Until that changes, EV's will only really be suitable as commuters. Do you have any kind of warranty on the battery? Maybe the software reset will help. Good luck.

Hallo Marc, dank dir bin ich gerade die Zero DSR/X probe gefahren und ich bin hellauf begeistert. Ich habe den Händler auch gefragt, ob es Probleme gibt z.B. mit der Batterie, er sagte, dass sie vor 2 Jahren eine Charge problembehafteter Batterien hatten. Probleme mit der Ladeanzeige und der Rekuperation waren die Folge, wie bei Dir. 2 Batterien hat er schon getauscht, die Kunden bekamen ein Ersatzfahrzeug in der Zeit, da die Batterien erst aus Amerika geliefert werden mußten. Dir wünsche ich weiterhin einen tollen Trip und viel Spaß.

With their HQ in the NL it should be simple to give them a ring and see if they can assist or explain. The reserve power thing and recovery when you stop to me seem odd. What struck me for these bikes is the huge difference in range between 50km/h and 90km/h (forget going faster as it gets exponentially worse). Blended country road and motorway will get you 100 miles max. Add drag by being larger than the test driver or transporting luggage and range gets exponentially worse again. I think.

Falls du die über nen Händler gekauft hast, Müsstest du doch was mit Gewährleistung versuchen können, wenn der Schaden von Anfang an bestand. Das gilt ja auch bei Gebrauchtkauf, ich glaube 6 Monate oder sogar 1 Jahr. Wird zwar ätzend und viel Papierkram / rechtlicher Kram, aber besser als die Kohle zu versenken.

got no knowledge of eletric bikes, from tinkering with lithium for home power backup, one thing stands out to me , most problems stem from cell balancing, and that the standard bms normally isnt good at getting cells that have drifted appart rebalanced. and that most bms tend to balance only while charging, so slower charging ie just enough to have the bms indicate its charging and hence balance for a longer period of time getting the imbalance better with every charge. the battery pack i have has a bms that has only 80mA balancing current , so the difference was almost nothing, barely visible eventually i just opened the battery to have access to cells/balance leads and thanks to some tips from e-bike forums , used the bulb method to draw down the higher state of charge cells that would push the voltage to high causing the bms to regard the battery as full as i have a 15s battery this took to long , and thus opted for rather lifting the lower soc cells by individually charging them note this was on lifep04 cells which have a flat soc curve except for low and high side, hence balancing makes a really big difference on capacity

Hi, Mark! I just had to write you something about the battery behavior - as a first I`d like to point, that no battery driven vehicle can reach the factory stated "Ideal" travel distance on one charge. That is a mathematical calculation more than it is a practical approach. It is the same with the onboard computer - if the battery is 100% full (which it never is due to the protection of the battery and making it able to live as long as possible) it calculates the ideal distance, at the same time not being able to add to the calculations the riding style, weight, weather conditions, temperature, and so on.... As a second point - why the battery increases it`s charge level when the vehicle is turned off for a while - all Lithium batteries have this phenomenon - it is like an inertia, battery is able to regenerate it`s charge level a little after use, this works the same for battery driven power tools, etc. In conclusion, I think the battery behaves as it should, and we have to keep in mind that usually battery management system will not allow the charge level to drop below 30% of charge - prolonging the battery life again not allowing the deeper discharge... All batteries will benefit from frequent charge, instead of being fully discharged and fully charged , when it is possible.. So I think everything is fine, until something really breaks... Have a safe trip - this and all the following!

If an electric motorcycle cannot last three years, that's a bust. In terms or reviewing the electric motorcycles, you're the guy for the job. That's a review viewpoint, that nobody is doing and everybody needs. I hope you can get some form of financial compensation or a fix, though.

I owned a 2015 Zero SR for 3 years and at 17,000 miles, the battery was dead. After a weeks in the shop, Zero offered to replace the battery but by that time I was ready for something a little more reliable. I bought a Honda Rebel 500 and never looked back.

Wow really hope the BMS reset helps with the battery! awesome videos Maybe you can try to cover less ground some days so you can rest more ? being tired on a bike isn't safe.. look after yourself mate
