The behavior of the Makaira has nothing to do with the drag and everything to do with the drag cam, which is why they offer a slow cam for those kinds of applications. Avet does the same for their smaller reels since they have a quicker lockup. The Makaira's do have a better drag lever and cam feel at higher drag ratings since the drag is pulled instead of pushed. Penn's have the largest drag curve and have adjustable strike so that is pretty much a nonissue for the most part also.

I've bought Penn Spinfisher IV 2500 and a Shimano Stradic CI4+ 2500 at the same time. I fished them both equally off a jetski and gave them the same after use rinse. The shimano stradic had to go for repairs (under warrantee) then it died the following season and is now in a landfill somewhere. The Penn Spinfisher is still perfect and hasn't even had a service yet. I was so impressed with Penn Spinfisher that I went out and bought 3 different sizes of the next model up (Penn Slammer). I've been so impressed with them that I've now sold my Daiwa Saltist 4000 LTD and Shimano Saragosa to get a Penn Authority. I fish a lot here in New Zealand and I like Shimano, I have Talica 8ii and I've even just bought a Beastmaster 9000A electric, but when it comes to spinning reels, I now only fish Penn IPX rated reels. I also had a Shimano Stella 2500 FE which cost me over $500 in servicing in 3 years!! WTF. Sold it! I'm told it was an older fresh water reel, but never again. I'd rather have a slammer than a stella

I know I’m late but I’m getting an 80w reel soon, how do the drag levels compare from a tiagra vs penn? I currently like the tiagra more but I see the drag shows lower than a penn.

The drag on tiagra is less than Penn also has less line capacity than the penn as well both are the same price... and just a fyi... the avet 80exw holds more line than both and has more drag than both and also has better ergonomics for reeling than both.. but they cost about $150 less..than both...

I got friends who have 80s tiagras, avets, makirias, penns. The makirias thrust bearing makes them stupid easy to reel in weights. It's literally no strain. Never have your drag locked down reeling in, when you get slammed by a shark it's bad news. I fish 32 oz heavy guage spider weights rig like a reef anchor. I tie 30# mono and weaken a few spots with pliers so it snaps easier. My weight then flips over and I reel it in backwards. It's a game changer, look into it. Tiagra 130s over everything.

We have fished them side by side with the avets and they dont pull in the surf weights we use easier... and our 48 oz or 3lb surf with 1/8" gage have had them stuck to where even in low gear they couldn't... but the drag locking up was the main thing.. and yes the weights flipping over is a game changer if it can take our big surf current and weed problem... def would like to give them a shot..

The tiagra reels have a well deserved reputation for reliability. I've had major water ingress problems with Avets

If your talking about their t-rx or 3 speed version then yes they are more expensive.. but the regular 2 speed are $50 cheaper than the penns tiagras...

Ive seen Okumas in small 5n reels, and bigger makaira reels, the drag is like that. The drag for some reason doesnt set until it hits strike. I had to get rid of my Okuma reels since i use circle hooks and like to slowly put the reel in gear and let the hook set on the side of the mouth. With the Okumas, I couldnt do it. I needed to use J hooks, but there was occasions where a j hook wasnt appropriate. For those, I use my Avets, and other reels as well. I use my MXL mostly, and SXJ as well.

I would have to disagree, there are videos of makiaras out there some of the only reels with perfect cam increase. Set strike at 30lbs and 1 will be 10lbs 2 will be 20lbs strike 30lbs, one of the only reels that works thus way out of the box. Doesnt need modified drag cams.

What I have seen a lot of is the drag ends up losing that gradient increase from low thru high... most of which have been in the less than 2 year mark.. but to each their own for sure at the end of the day...

@@TeamHardLife very interesting, I think maybe how we fish and service of the reels might effect my experience vs others as well. The makairas were designed by Tiburon and some influence from cal sheets for west coast long range stand up fishing. In ky experience they work great are an easy size to use like the 20s for stand up style but powerful. Also most guys have long spaces between trips, and reels are serviced frequently (mine personally after every two trips) as we are 1000 miles from repair with the chance at the fish of a lifetime. Avet was also designed and built on the west coast for the same thing but I believe there drags work somewhat different then the makaira or visx for that matter. They actually have fallen out of favor , more for size than quality i think. Its pretty nice to have a 20 size real with 800 yards of spectra a super low gear and alot of drag when you can't chase a fish and have to hold the rod all day. They all make good products apples and oranges.

I will say as far as the 5n reels you refer to which would be the andros, metaloid, alijos, or cavalla those models in any size have a steep drag curve. Cant say I have had an issue with circle hooks, but also don't use the ones I have much for bait fishing so my experience is limited.

I have a question sir, how to back off the drag on the tiagra 30 wlrs lever drag if you gonna keep and store it unused for a long period of time? For stardrag reels, some says its better too loosen the drag if we gonna keep it unused to keep the drag last longer and the drag washers inside not dried out and not stick to the metal washer. So, i wonder how to keep the drag smooth and not having a problem on the tiagra's if we gonna keep it unsed for long period of time. Do i have to set the drag cam to the minimum or just put the lever on a free spool? Can help me out?

@@TeamHardLife Okay cool, cos I do respect your opinion, and would like to know if you think the Accurate Platinum Twindrag reels, are worth double the money of a Tiagra, International or other reels that cost half what an Accurate does. I love the Leverdrag adjustment system on the Accurate Platinums, being in letters, not notches. So you can just push it to say Letter H at 17lbs or whatever, rather than having to put a pit of tape on the frame with drag settings written on it. Are they really double the reel of an Avet or Tiagra, Or 1/3 better than an Alutecnos or Duel? Also, do the Trx 80's have a clicker as loud as a Tiagra's 82db clicker? cos my Alutecnos' clicker is way too quiet & needs the spring beefing up for sure. Ok, as a tackle shop we see first hand all the reels that come infor service or maintenance... and avets like all the other reels with get damaged and or something fail.. however, have also see where they last thru our testing behind crazy where others fail while I spool them up. Hard Life - I've contemplated buying an Avet EX or EXW to round out my spread. Right now I own 5 Penn Internationals. All 5 are the V series, 1 generation back from the current VI. I love them, mainly because parts are easy to get and I can have them serviced locally. From what I've seen with the Avet EX's I'm impressed, the only thing I don't know about is the dry drag system vs the greased drag of the Internationals. Do the Avet's drags stay smooth consistently? I've heard the drag curves on Avet's are fairly steep and not very linear meaning they basically go from freespool to 90% of the strike drag pre-setting by just engaging the lever. Have you found that to be true? Or is that just some internet rumor? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Yes sir will fill in more information tomorrow but it all depends on the preset setting .. but yes sir they have a steeper incline compared to penns and some shimanos...but that is a really good thing when your trying to not have to do so much resetting of your preset..

Had makairas for 8 years and have caught many 100 lb tunas. They are flawless and really smooth. Not one single fail . Maybe it’s how your not taking care of your gear.

Thats exactly it I dont ... the reason behind it was because I grew up penns, shimanos, abu, lews, newells, etc. And basic storage like backing off the drags and or a simple rinse and they worked for atleast a decade on most if they didn't make it that long i got rid of the reel... so when getting into New reels if they can perform like that then I dont want them cause if they truly want to be the best of what I have fished with they have to outperform what I have already gone thru..

Team Hard Life that’s all we do is rinse them off and others I know. Maybe you got a bad batch. Most captains I know run the makairas on the west coast on the long range boats and only report great things. In all fairness I love my Talicas to but I don’t think they are as stout as the okumas. But that’s what makes America awesome, we can all be free to run the gear we like.

I’m having trouble deciding how much braid to put on my tiagra 50 vs how much topshot I should put on. I was thinking like 500-700 yards of 150lb braid and the rest 100lb topshot of mono. But I’m not sure how long the topshot should be. What would you recommend?

We stopped using any mono entirely even on our cast out reels cause we saw that we had more Cut offs with mono on top .. as well it ate up our line capacity...

I'm out here sharking fishing and watching this video and when the reel went off in the song I jumped out of my chair and got three steps off before got a bite came in on the song. I thought my reel went off. The heart rate jumped up and all. 8ft 4 tiger beached today with my shimano Triton 80w Not huge but she was pretty.

The penns dont hold more line than an avet.. I have 100's of vids showing and proving it... if you go size for size these reels you will see that the avets are cheaper...now the avets have a series of reels that are a higher grade such as the g2 and raptor series or the trx this double up the drag and bigger bearings as well.. yes those specific line at more expensive than the regular series reels...

@@TeamHardLife I've landed 2 large blue fins this year 1 was 123# the other was 209# with my penn int.20 visx fishing 100#Jb w/ 200 # leader on flat falls the 123#er took 20 minutes the 209er took 24 minutes..and I'm not a penn guy at all but when I started to see more and more penn internationals beings uses by guys that are far superior fisherman than me I decided there was a good reason. Like I said I've owned them all I wouldn't take a talica if you gave it to me and okuma makiras aren't much better. I had a brand new one get so hot fighting a 60 #er that the deckie was pouring bottle water on it. And I've never tried pulling up weights but I've caught over 30 bfts over 60 pounds and 13 of those were over 100#and 6 at 200# plus so I've tugge on a few in my time. bottom line the Penns ints are the most reliable imo and for the price they're a no brainer..I appreciate you input and agree to disagree .having said that I know that accurate wasn't mentioned by you but would you care to give a honest opinion on avet vs accurate? Anyhow tight lines bro🤙🏻
