I trick I learned when fishing around sharks, if you free-spool the reel, it allows the fish to out swim the shark. This only works if you have a good hook set. Having the fish stringed to the boat reduces its ability to dodge the shark. I'm also not adverse to sacrificing a shark or two to his friends with a spear gun. It's a shark eat shark world out there. Shimano is crazy with the pricing on a 50 Talica. Just imagine what a Talico 80 or a 130 would cost? Can't imagine there is a large market for a $2,000 reel (the 130)..

I feel like that new Penn 70 is becoming the new 80. Seeing a lot more of them out here in the west for bluefin trolling and kites.

Any thoughts on Daiwa Saltiga LD60 2spd 2020? Theyve been used alot for tuna fishing in west coast. Thanks!

The penn 50visx in my opinion is just like the talica50 I prefer it because of how I can change the strike position very solid reel I was running 14kg at stike 30kg at full and got for the price of talica 30

Talicas are junk. I’ve seen 6 have catastrophic failures in the course of 5 days of hard fishing. 50visx is the gold standard. 50 tiagra lrs is bullet proof as well but over constructed. Needs work from cal sheets to machine down the spool and the side plates and needs a bearing job

When it comes to anything up to a 50 it's gotta be Okuma Solterra. Prices are insane compared to anything else and they are great. I've never had a problem ever and i switched to them about 10 years ago. I've landed 400lb blue marlin, close to 300lb bigeye and last year i had a 700lb class bluefin on one. For over 50s Penn. Just the fact that i live in Philly and had been to the factory numerous times for parts, which were always just given to me you can't beat that. They have me new side plates for 3 80s for nothing. I'd love to see what Shimano would've done. Js. I have a handful of Shimano that i use i just can't see a difference for the massive price difference.

Any tackle shop saying the tallica is the best is just trying to make money off you.

You may not like Talica, and that’s fine, but Jimmy is as honest as they come. Many folks love the reel. Others do not. That’s ok.

@@saltwaterfishinguniversity lol anyone peddling junk isn’t trustworthy. I’m sure he’s read the brochures and turned the handle on land showing it to his customers more than a few times. But how many hours does he have fishing the reel, pulling on big fish? Fact is these reels don’t hold up to big fish. For an everyday person who wants to look flashy and thinks a 35 lb yellowfin is a trophy they’re great reels. Any serious fisherman wouldn’t buy that. Mind you I am someone who would tell you Stella’s are absolutely worth it and have more Stella’s than people spend on their cars. I’ve seen too many of these talica 50s fail. Six in 5 days of fishing. All six relatively new. Broken reel seats, broken main shafts, bearing issues, etc. take the money and buy a penn or tiagra. Hell even the makairas are better

I have a set of Talica IIs for inshore and they're magnificent. Ultra smooth. My only complaint is line capacity. Otherwise they really are exceptional. That said, I am using mine for mahi and kings. These are not 50s. Right there with you on the Stella's. I have them on Callstar 700L custom rods and they are unbeatable.
@peterk8148 ай бұрын
Inshore is fine. They’re not gonna find failures. The Trinidad’s ocea jiggers are some staples in my collection. They’re great. But tallicas are meant to be serious offshore reels designed to handle modern braided lines. But they break on any serious fish and heavy drag

We have used talica 25s for 5 or 6 years now not a single failure with one yet. We fish 75 or so days a year. We're not a full time charter but we put in our time. Biggest fish so far on a talica 25 for us is 108" blue marlin. I agree with you on the talica 50 though I am not a fan.
