Did you ever get to the root cause of this, tear down the lower end? To overheat two heads even cheap ones I'd have to suspect common root cause like a blockage in a water channel in the block resulting uneven warming/cooling.

Hi Mike. So we have an engine that has thick gooey oil in it. it has been boiling up, or running out of coolant and then overheating probably more than 10 times. WHAT!!!! can possibly be wrong with it is not the question, it is more what is going to be good about it. And the answer to that boys and girls is, written on the toilet wall by Mr F. Hall. It's the old story Mike, no maintenance will catch up with you. Take it to the nearest Landrover funeral director ( scrap yard ) Best of luck. Yorkshire Rob.

Interesting test. To get the pistons the same height you must turn the engine over so two pistons will be on the compression/exhaust stroke (travelling upwards) and two on the power/intake stroke (travelling down). I wonder if the rings float a little as the pistons change direction and affect the quality of the seal? Be interesting to see the test repeated with the crankshaft a further 180 degrees over, but life is short.

Interesting fact there Mike, that the head dimensions and bolt patterns are the same from the earlier cast iron head series engines. I've sometimes thought the Tdi engine would have been better with a cast iron head, the alloy head is what usually ends the Iife of a Tdi, (an Achilles heel so to speak). But I suspect it's more complicated than that.

The block is almost the same as the 2.25 from the series 2 - they didn't change much over the years - just a few tweaks here and there They put an oil gallery in for the piston cooling and turbo feed, engine mount position, oil return from the head and a few others - they certainly got their money out of that design!

@@BritannicaRestorations fair enough - we didn't go to that level with ours and the gas flowed head really helps the motor before the turbo kicks in - well it helped in our case when the turbo spat its dummy the other week :) Disclaimer - where we live the official speed limit is 35mph so driving is a little different to mainland driving!

I need to say something. I've not been watching long and I'm quite impressed/ The problem is the questions I'm asking might sound like I'm sniping and I'm not. There are so many numpties on KZbin talking authoritatively but spouting shite. If you bother yourself asking them questions then it is just a waste of making the effort to type. So if I ask you questions it's not that I'm sniping, it's that I respect what I have seen and want to ask about what you did or said. Having said that: 13.50 onwards. *"We're going to put in at least 130lbs into this which at 15psi is."* How does one put 130lbs in something at 15psi? The only way I could envisage that was if we had a large pressure vessel on a scale and inserted air at 15psi and it managed to weigh 130lbs more? Honestly I'm not sniping!
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
'Which is roughly ten times more than 15 psi is' My air pressure is 130 psi and the max pressure of the casting under vehicle coolant pressure is 15 psi
@COIcultist4 жыл бұрын
@@BritannicaRestorations I still didn't understand what you were saying. I'll leave what I was typing until the penny dropped. In actuality, I added about three words to finish off the sentence. So you understand where I was going. First of all thanks for the prompt response. I've no idea if I'm industrially missing something but: When you mentioned 15psi I assumed you had an adjustable pressure port from your compressor. I've just got a cheap Aldi compressor but there is the full pressure port and a variable pressure port. I missed the *"which at 15psi is almost ten times what water pressure should be."* I'd heard your 15psi arse about face or just failed to hear the reference to water pressure. Thanks. If I argue with people and I find I'm wrong I'm never unhappy. I've learnt something. It took me years to realise many people are not wired that way.

Is there much of a "community" of LR enthusiasts in Canada and the USA? Maybe you could get on the interweb and encourage Canadian Landy owners to get together, put some money together, get in touch with trustworthy contacts in the UK and set up some kind of scheme to group-buy parts and get them shipped across several times a year? You could give the group some advice about what to ask for when agreeing purchases (video evidence of engines running, compression tests etc) and then leave it up to the group to satisfy themselves that they were buying serviceable parts. If somebody shows up with, say, an engine they've bought from the UK, you'd inspect it and if it was junk it'd be between the group and it's UK suppliers to sort it out, without you having to get involved. You could even, perhaps, offer some kind of paid internet-consultation service, offering assistance to DIYers who're part of the group. Thing is, in the UK a dead 300tdi engine isn't really THAT big of a deal. £500 will get you a complete, running, 300tdi engine which a competent DIYer could fit in a weekend to restore a £7,000 Defender to working order. Seems like having to wait, say, 3 months for a reasonably-priced, serviceable, engine to be shipped across to Canada in order to properly repair a valuable vehicle would be better, in the long-run, for owners, for the LR community *and* for overburdened mechanics than just throwing a vehicle like this back together and then flogging it to pass the problems onto somebody else.

@@BritannicaRestorations Strange situation when Canadian LR owners must, presumably, realise that they struggle to find parts but they haven't tried to do anything to remedy the problem. Maybe they're all just too used to having people like you doing all the legwork for them? Used to be quite into VW Beetles, back in the day, and most of the tuning parts for Beetles came from the USA - from the whole "beach buggy" scene - but obtaining parts from the USA, through clubs and forums, was just as easy as ordering from the UK. Best thing I ever did was buy the windscreen for a splitty van from the USA. Glass would have cost £500 from a UK supplier. Got a used windscreen from the USA for $80 + $30 insured shipping. I figured that if it got broken during the trip I could claim on the insurance and order a replacement from a UK supplier... but it arrived perfectly intact! Be nice if there was a similar set-up for LRs in Canada.
