I feel a well-controlled discussion between ("Dominion") Tom Holland, and ("Professional Atheist") Alex O'Connor is inevitable one of these days. Has anybody considered setting that up?

Whenever a religion shifts from being persecuted to hegemony, it doesn't take long to prove itself no better than its persecutors. This alone is a strong indicator that religions are man-made rather than divinely inspired.

Indeed. How true. Man - made and misery creating. Thank you so much for your post.

Very informativ Episode, exept the TITLE? Somehow ist the Middleeastern Bloodshed not so much worth,as that of the Cathars! Jerusalem slaughter,by the Franks ,is Downplayd by the Titel

Wasn't Louis VIII made king of England?
@Hugh_Morris4 күн бұрын
Not exactly. While he was the prince, he invaded England and rebel barons against John declared him king. When John died William Marshal took control of English forced, defeated Louis, and forced him to sign a treaty where he renounced his claim on England and paid a fine.

@@mackenshaw8169 If you'd said that there were echoes of gnostic flesh/spirit dualism in 1960s mysticism, or in New Ageism, I could agree with you. But I don't see a connection between gnosticism and identity politics or social justice concern.

It's kind of irksome when they are describing something horrible and cruel that happened while laughing, like two stupid teenagers. 👎 The cynicism of a historian...

Tom's argument "doing it (inquisitors torturing to save souls) for love" is really so stupid as to be contemptable. The act of routinely torturing someone can only be done by a very low empathy person or sociopath. Sociopaths of course, not known for doing things for other people out of love. Even if someone with high empathy did become a torturer it would rapidly absolutely destroy or twist them psychologically. Now I really enjoy these podcasts but sometimes these guys veer of into subjects far outside their expertise and say just silly stuff.

I think it's fine to question Tom Holland's argument. That part troubled me as well somewhat. However I understand his point about the French Revolutionaries in the Vendée. There is a tendency for those who have persuaded themselves that they are the "Righteous" to feel that anything is justified. I think Mr Holland is always trying to find support for his larger thesis about the truly pervasive influence of Christianity in the West, influencing even its opponents.
