I'm currently contemplating buying a second vehicle with a manual transmission. I have time to learn to drive it (actually I've driven a stick shift 4 years ago for a week), but I have to decide if the transmission will be a deal breaker for this vehicle, which also has a camper that I want.

@madelaki3 жыл бұрын
Yeap. I'm currently learning, have been for the last year, give or take a couple months. On the first month I could tell the transmission was going to be a big, big problem. I couldn't convince my dad that it was hard because it's been second nature for him for decades, he doesn't even remember his beginner days. Sadly I can't afford to simply get an automatic car, as they're relatively rare where I live and we're dirt poor (the "car" I drive is actually a van from the early 90s that we got for cheap because it had been left to rot in tall grass for years). On top of that I have a pretty bad case of generalized anxiety disorder. So I've just been soldiering on. Tonight for the first time ever I felt very relaxed driving my mom home. I still have plenty left to learn like parallel parking or highway norms, but I'm making progress. I doubt it'll take me 4 years, but given the circumstances, I wouldn't feel inadequate if it did. Life isn't fair, what can ya do.

She reflects exactly what i felt during my lessons and how i still feel after i've passed. A lot of people when they pass are straight onto the motorway and driving to the fullest. People like me who have driven for over 2 years now have only been on the motorway about 4 times and each time was because i had no other choice and each time was only one junction in duration. It takes time for some of us like she said, to just gain confidence in ourselves first. My first time driving on my own was to work and back which was only 10 minutes away, i was shitting bricks. Now 2 years later i can say i've driven 85 miles to the coast and back. A huge milestone. I hope mores to come. Thanks for the video i'm just glad i'm not alone with this anxiety crap.

I think I had about the same amount of hours of lessons because of my anxiety (I'm 24 with learning difficulties that affect my driving.) I never thought I'd pass - I passed my test 2nd time this year. I chose automatic, because it let me focus more on the road. I'd have panic attacks before every lesson, nearly quit, and hated driving. Now I've been driving for a few months and I'm doing things I'd never thought I'd do, like motorway driving for example. I promise you, you can do it. If you want more lessons, have them. If you want automatic, do it. Having a patient driving instructor that encourages and believes in you makes a difference. I had a couple that raised their voice and got annoyed with me. I lacked confidence for a long time time and the pressure to pass was a lot. I drove on and off for years and ended up wasting lots of money. During lockdown I bought a car and family members helped me to build my confidence. I focused on just being comfortable and driving to ease the pressure off the test. I could drive but it was the nerves so trying to relax and remember you’re in control helps. I then did both - family lessons and professional and found a new instructor I finally passed with only 17 days left on my theory! I couldn’t drive on dual carriageways without worrying or doing more than 40mphs but now it’s a breeze. You can do this! Driving is not a sprint it’s a marathon. The more you do lessons and learn the better you are on the road

Last month I decided enough was enough and booked lessons with an automatic vehicle. I only did 7 hours and my instructor told me to book my drivers test and I passed! Fantastic video as always. I have been learning all year and I'm an anxious person. Eventually, I realised my instructor was not right for me. He was very nice, but he ALWAYS made me drive at the speed limit, and always made me go faster, and pushed me way to hard. What my anxiety thing in driving is when I am manuevering for parking because I am driving slow, its hard to read if my tires are straight if you dont have power steering, so I struggle when I see my vehicle weaves on side when I want to move/reverse forward. Its easy to re straight your tires while driving because you have at least decent speed

In my case my instructor is okay however I get nervous and I have this gut feeling that makes me uncomfortable before any driving lesson. It started off okay but now every time he teaches something new he expects me to know how to do it so every time I screw up, he rises his voice. I make mistakes and everytime he makes me more and more uncomfortable. For me it’s important to do things several times before I finally get them so I don’t think this instructor is my right match. I’ve almost had 20 hours driving and I was thinking of finding another instructor. It’s so hard to find one though so it’s like I have to stick with him or I’ll just practice with my mom

I am currently learning to drive with Social anxiety, I know exactly how she feels, but personally I found that trying to do precise movements under the 'scrutiny' of my instructor on quiet roads, such as the simple things, as practising speed and turning at junction's and so on, the early stuff. To be more anxiety feeding and causes me make mistakes, then actually driving on roads with other motorists. Once i was on those, the anxiety melted away as i was driving, because i had to pay attention to the road rather then the nagging feeling of being watched. That isn't to say I don't make small mistakes however, nobody is perfect.

Thank you so much for your videos! I will continue learning with each one. I passed on my second try today with 2 minors, my first attempt ended very quickly as I was just so nervous with the pressure of the covid backlog and my theory test expiration date approaching. Had to go for 4 ‘tests’ in total as 2 were cancelled on the day and the anxiety for days/weeks before each one was awful. Overall, it took me around 3 years to pass due to many factors like lack of money, no friends or family available to practice with, having to switch instructors at short notice, and of course, lockdown after lockdown. These videos kept my driving knowledge up and have helped me to gain confidence with my driving despite it all. To anyone else struggling to get their license, take it easy on yourself, there’s so many obstacles at the moment and it might feel nearly impossible but just keep going. You will get there, best of luck!

This really helped calm my nerves. Unfortunately, my entire family has engraved into my head that manual is the only car ill be learning in so i had no other choice. I have an incredibly hard time conceptualizing the clutch and doing 4 different things in a 3 second span so what ends up happening is my mind blanks, I forget what to do and have a mini anxiety attack on the road, which never ends well (no crash but alot of embarrassment/humiliation ). The second i see another car im already in panic mode and even my mums concerned about the anxiety I get the day before a lesson. I honestly think if I was allowed to just have an auto license, I would be much happier, but that wont happen for a while🥲. I remind myself that even if it takes longer, it'll be the right amount of time that I personally need and that I'll get there one day😖 This video and specifically your channel helps me alot so thank you so much for that!

It's important to learn what you want to learn. As for too much to do at once, try to learn to control the car slowly in a quiet area without traffic. Then try to accept when you're learning to improve your skill on the road you will slow traffic down. It's perfectly normal when learning.

It was great listening to Alexandra, but a lot of ppl don’t have the money to do over 300 hours of lessons. I do believe confidence is a key thing with driving and believing in yourself. Plus listening to the instructor, watching self help videos, if you keep at it, all will sink in. A instructor can’t snap someone out of having anxiety but maybe doing some meditation and calming videos before driving may help. I’m not knocking Alexandra’s story, it’s great that she passed, congratulations. But it’s unrealistic for most who wouldn’t be able to afford 300 hours of driving.. in my opinion.
@astrid71463 жыл бұрын
Alexandra is truly inspiring! I've had my 37th driving lesson yesterday, and as usual lately it went horribly. In addition to lessons with my instructor, I drive almost every day under the supervision of my father, and when I do I feel like I'm doing pretty alright. I follow the speed limitations, I can park, get the car back in the garage in reverse, make a U-turn, etc. But whenever I drive with my driving instructor, it goes horribly: I get so nervous I don't notice half the signs, I drive either too fast or too slow, I brake too much, and as a result my driving instructor points out every time I do wrong (which is normal), but she does so in an increasingly frustrated and annoyed manner, and snaps at me when I get either annoyed or depressed as a result. She called me "a pain in the *ss" yesterday and I ended up not uttering a word for the rest of the lesson. I was even more taken aback considering we had been chatting and laughing just a few minutes prior. I know I'm an anxious wreck (driving is terrifying to me, no matter how much or often I drive) and I've always been better at theory than practice, but it's very disheartening to feel like after all this time I'm still no good at driving. It's like I'm not making any progress anymore. I don't even know if I really am being a "pain in the *ss" like she said or if she's the one making me too anxious to drive properly... Anyway, sounds like I'm gonna need about 300 hours as well

If you still need the lessons then find a different instructor, there are lovely understanding instructors out there. I changed instructors several times and most people do. You have to feel really comfortable with your instructor. I found it nerve wracking being a car with someone who was technically watching my every move, once I knew how to drive I just drove with family and took my test in my own car

I have had instructor who used c word f word and swearing all sort. Also the one who said he will say everytime I make mistake fail words just because I didn't listen to him and went to driving test but failed I just wanted to know how does it feels he also refuse to let me use his car to test so I used my own and managed to test full 45mins with I only failed because I went on red box with bicycle 🥲 and stalled on the hill on independent driving. I was so glad I went for a test. I've done almost full scored on theory test both times that's the most easy part but driving with short temper instructors is horrifying....so just practicing with my own car now. Good luck 🤞

Such a good idea to post a video like this. Thankyou . I’ve avoided learning to drive for years and have just gone back to it. I decided to learn in an automatic this time round, to take out the stress of gears ( that was a big thing for me) I’m 4 lessons in now and I’m actually enjoying it. I still get extremely anxious at times and so it’s harder for me to take in information. I am learning and enjoying it though overall. This is such a great video, in contrast to Alexandra when I first started driving I felt really confident about it. But since, there have been lots of obstacles meaning I had to take breaks, find new instructors etc and as a result my confidence is way way down. My current instructor doesn't listen to me when I say I need to build my confidence and just says 'it's not about confidence, you just have to do it' lol but to do it I need the confidence!! I think after a few hours with him my confidence has never been so low. Now I have my test tomorrow and I've never felt so anxious about something in my life. My lesson with him today made me feel like I just can't do it. BUT just after half an hour of watching your videos - especially about roundabouts - I am starting to feel like I can do it, and this video shows me I'm not alone in my anxieties! Thank you

@@ConquerDriving Sometimes your teacher (parent, sibling, relative, friend) or driving instructor are the ones that can build or break your confidence, if they are going wacko, screams and scolds whenever you commit a driving mistake (hitting the curb, driving at the wrong lane, under/oversteering etc.) Then it just adds up to anxiety and low confidence. But if learners really want to learn and persevere, they will have to take these moments as a challenge rather than handicaps. I endured a lot of these harsh words and profanity laced ones, ate my pride and developed a thick skin coming out from these, because I really want to learn and improve my driving
