I still watch your videos, after passing over 3 years ago, but still find it helpful. on the point about challenging lane changes my examiner did that, I could not move across and stated this to him and he gave me alternative directions, I ended up a route I had drivven on hundreds of rime before as it was just by my house and I used to ride a motorbike before passing my driving licence. I feel like he was testing how I handle pressure and my judgment call. Passed first time with 1 minor.

Well done Sarah! Also Richard's advice about certain drivers who sometimes try to intimidate is absolutely true - always do what you know is safest. I had a situation once with a car behind me at a very busy roundabout. I had to wait as a yellow hatched "keep clear" box was in front of me and my exit ahead was not clear due to a queue of traffic. Car behind beeped me as he wanted me to move forward into the box, so he could move around behind me and cut across to the left to take the exit he wanted (he was also in the wrong lane for the exit he actually wanted). I stood my ground and waited until I could clear the yellow box before I moved. Not easy when you're under pressure though.

I drive almost daily 150km alone to and from work with never any issues (been doing this for 6 months as that is how long you have to wait for a test in my country) but the second my examiner entered the car all my nerves took over. Luckily I found an open spot for another exam next week and im binging your videos now to see if it could help me improve or prepare a little more.

If you know your driving is at a good standard, be confident in knowing that you can drive and navigate the roads safely and within the law. The first 5-10 mins of the test will always be nerve-racking, but trust that it’s get better as you get more comfortable and used to the car (if you’re driving a different car on the test). Avoid doing anything unnecessary just to please examiner; do whatever you deem necessary and important, stay vigilant, enjoy the drive and do not dwell on any mistakes you may make or think you made during the test.

Would you be interested in doing a video on what in German is called "Rettungsgasse"? It allows emergency vehicles to make their way through traffic jams on the Autobahn without needing to wait for other vehicles to clear a pathway. I'm not sure why such a practice does not exist in the UK. In Germany it is a legal requirement to help form this "emergency lane" if traffic is stop-start on the Autobahn. British visitors to Germany also need to know about this.
@ConquerDrivingАй бұрын
Thank you for watching and for your generosity. It is something I noticed last time I was in Germany, I didn't know the word but everyone parted way and left a space in the middle when queueing in case an emergency vehicle came through. I also noticed motorbikes where not taking advantage of this and were also waiting in the queue. If I would have known this at the time I would have included it in my driving in Germany video on my other channel. I will consider it but I'm not sure if it will be a video that's relevant to this channel which is more about driving in Great Britain. Also, to get the footage I would have to go to Germany and get into traffic to film it so it would have to wait until I'm next in Germany.

But she pulled forward and was in the end trying to park in a by that had a cone in it to denote she shouldn't be using any bay beyond that point. She stopped the examiner said calm down think what you have been touch and try again she did parked outside of the designated bay but in a bay properly and only got a DF for it. By FAR the hardest thing for me was added pressure due to test backlogs. I passed back in Dec 2021, and although it sounds like the overall waiting lists are worse now, cancellations weren't too easy to come by. Feeling like failing would lead to months of delay and more money on lessons was a huge burden. My driving on lessons would deteriorate steadily to a point far below my average level as an upcoming test loomed closer. I think if it was the way it was when I was younger and people were getting another test the minimum 10 days later if they failed, I would have found it far easier. Passed on my 3rd attempt, had to wait 3 months between tests 1 and 2 and another 2 months between tests 2 and 3. Glad to hear that cancellations sound easier to get and that pupils can generally get tests when they're ready, not spin their wheels literally and figuratively for months after they're at the level they need to be at.

This video really reminded me of my first time taking exam (passed on 2nd) in 2017. I've driven my best first time, smooth as proffesional but it was morning traffic and examiner ask me to change lane like in 5:23 and take next right, it was so heavy traffic I tried snailing just to change lane and I missed the corrner while waiting. Next time I was bit nervous and I believe I've driven worse than first time, but I passed. English is not my native language so please excuse some mistakes if I've made.

I failed my last test because apparently I was driving too hesitantly and slow (which I disagree with tbh). Richard gave the advice to go when we feel like it's safe and reasonable, which is exactly what I did in the test, and I failed anyway for being too hesitant. That knocked my confidence and trust in my own judgement / decisions quite a lot if I'm being honest. I have the next test this week and two driving lessons the days before it. I hope those will be enough to get my confidence back up again because I fear I'm going to be even more hesitant in this test because my confidence in myself is lower from failing the last test. It might be worth mentioning that being hesitant has never been an issue for me before. I'm not entirely certain why it suddenly was like that in the test (apparently). Also I really do have to pass this test for organisation reasons, which isn't exactly helpful in taking the pressure off me.. Does anyone maybe have any advice? 😅

Hi Rich, at 16:00 when you're in the 60mph bit of the road, your student seems to average at around 40mph and you say that this is a good speed. I presumed I'd get a minor if I didn't drive at at least 50mph on such roads. Is that not something I need to worry too much about then..? I feel very stressed travelling at these much faster speeds so if I can get away with doing 40mph on the test then I will. Thanks!!
@Mortarion6666Ай бұрын
You are expected to go a suitable speed for the road conditions. 40mph is an acceptable speed because of the narrow width of the road, the tight corners, and the condition of the road. On a wider, straighter road 40mlh would not be acceptable and you would be expected to reach 60mph. It's down to your own personal judgement of what you think is safe, but you should be making the most of the speed limit when you can.
@ConquerDrivingАй бұрын
You need to make the most of the speed limit when it's safe to do so, but sometimes the road and conditions don't allow you to drive at the speed limit. Sarah was at an appropriate speed for the road she was on.

0:50 Just out of curiosity, did she just go from gear 4 to 2 or is this a different gear layout of angle? If she did, should she be in 3 originally since it's 30 mph or it doesn't matter? What's the difference (eg. feel, control etc.), or better way if max speed is 30
@ConquerDrivingАй бұрын
You can certainly skip gears. It's important to choose the correct gear for the particular car, speed and power required. This video may help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaPTZqluo7uDfrcsi=sQ4z--j1vObUHjo-
@hungleba3996Ай бұрын
In this instance and from watching Richard’s videos, this car can handle 30mph in 5th gear, but depending on the situation at hand, you can drive this particular at 30mph in 4th or even 3rd gear. Most cars tend to prefer 4th or 3rd gear, but that’s subjective between different makes and models. Skipping gears is not a problem, and as long as it’s done safely and with purpose, no harm done there. And no, the gear layout is the standard H-pattern for six gears, with the reverse gear being on the far top left, next to 1st gear.
@q.u.e.r.t.yАй бұрын
@@hungleba3996 Ah, thanks, I was mostly confused about wether it's usual to drive in that high of a gear in what seems to be a slower speed for it.
@hungleba3996Ай бұрын
@@outlander_... You absolutely can do upshift block changes, there’s nothing that forbids it. Say you want to accelerate quickly up to 60mph, instead of going 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th (and 6th if you have six gears), stay in 2nd gear, floor the gas, get up to desired speed and then shift into the highest gear. (In terms of fuel economy, being in the highest gear possible helps keep the car quiet, rpms low and saves fuel)
@outlander_...Ай бұрын

There is no point changing down the gears as you slow down if you leave the clutch down as the gears do nothing but take your hand off the wheel. However, if you lift the clutch after a downshift you will benefit from a bit of engine braking as you slow down. But it's not necessary. It took me around 50 hours to pass my test first time so it’s really about how quicklly you pick things and progress while driving

I assume that you’re learning to drive in the UK. To put things into perspective, I learned to drive in Finland 4 years ago, and had a total of 14,5h of official instructed driving (10,5h with an instructor and a real car, 4h in a car simulator on my own) + some private driving with my dad. It took me two months to complete everything and passed first time and later on got my license. So yes, it’s important to understand your speed of learning and never compare your hours with others. Also, having a base knowledge before learning personally helped me quite a bit in starting to learn how to drive.
@julianpenfold1638Ай бұрын
Where you wanted to turn right but started in the "wrong" (left) lane and there was a queue of traffic in the right lane, surely most people would have just slowed right down and begged to enter the right lane? Obviously you don't want to hold up traffic in the left lane but isn't this a fairly normal driving situation and people in both lanes would generally be fairly understanding - in my experience someone lets you in fairly quickly and most behind will be understanding.
@ConquerDrivingАй бұрын
You shouldn't hold up a free flowing lane to beg to get the lane you want. If you did this on test and caused an obstruction it would likely be marked. You should continue and find an alternative route.
