I just picked up a 1956 30 hp Johnson for 150 bucks electric start needs new wires I have to rebuild the carburetor it sat in his basement since the mid 1970s no doubt the water pump needs replaced compression check was 103 and 105 It has a tank in front the guy gave me the paper work says everything weighs cost was only $300 for 30 hp Johnson in 1956 but that was a lot then thanks for the videos

Enjoy the video.I have a 1985 Johnson 20hp I recently purchased similar to your 30hp.I found out if I just replace the intake it will be a 25hp due to it being just restricted for the 20hp.I did not want to attempt boring it out on the motor due to metal going in the intake.No carb. swap is needed(got a carb. from a 25hp and did not realize they were the same) and I could take it up in hp by adding different carbs for 28hp and up.

Hi friend! I am from Argentina, I have a Johnson 35 model 81, and I get wet the spark plugs ... I tried everything and I can not find the fault ... - the gasoline pump is not. I did a lot of tests ... can it be a check? (OIL SEAL)

I have a question?....i cleaned my carbs and got my 1975 50 evinrude motor running.. I went back out a few days later and now it won't run in less I'm spraying gas in the carbs ..so I recleaned them again and it's still not running...just wondering if you had any idea

You might need to check the fuel pump. I sometimes set the fuel tank on the boat seat to see if gravity feed lets it run better. I know I had my fuel tank on the ground and the motor in a tank and that little fuel pump cannot suck the fuel that high. Stay Safe Stay Well!!

Man I have been looking all over for a carb for my old 25 hp and this is almost identical to mine, my model and serial numbers come up with nothing as to what year mine is, I hope you have the part number or year this was, I know this will work on mine, I hope lol Model # SE25RSLM The only difference is mine has the idle screw adjustment on the opening of the carb, not the side deal you have, not sure then name.

Sir, I have a question that is fuel related just not to the carb. On the fuel pump it has a large flat head screw in the center and mine is loose. Do you know what that is for and is it ok to just tighten it hand tight? Thanks

bingo 5481 sounds like the screw that holds the filter that should be tight some have a filter that can be cleaned and put back on

Great Videos. Wish I had come across your videos a year ago when I had to pull the head off my 1985 Johnson 20HP. So, is there truth to I only need to replace the intake manifold and carburetor on my 20 HP with 30 HP intake and manifold to make it 30 HP? I have heard some say you need to replace the throttle control cam too. I have to replace the leaf valves in it now so I will have both off anyway. Figured I'd increase HP while I am there.

I have heard the same thing. I have never change one out to see what all to change. I do know that the block is the same and the same pistons and crank and rods are the same in the older models in that hp range. It makes it easy getting parts. Be sure and let us know how it goes for you.

It is hard to say with just this information. If the motor did run fine and just started this I would check for a lean fuel condition. I think the wrong fuel could if wrong enough.

@@OmFishing I finally got around to the carb job. I swapped carburetors on my 1999 25 horse Johnson with a 1985 30 horsepower Johnson carb. I'm having trouble with the fuel line location inputs as they are different from the 25 to the 30 horse. the 25 has a inlet nipple on the fuel bowl close to the intake manifold as does the 30 horse but the 30hp also has the input nipple off the front of the carburetor bowl where the 25 has just a brass plug. @@myronclement3238 The fuel line on my motor connected to the carb at the back of the bowl. The fuel primer fuel line connects to the bottom of the carb close to the motor. My motor has a manual primer and it gets it fuel from the bottom front of the carb. I hope this helped.

I was wondering if you have a service manuel?I was trying to find torque specs for the bolts and nuts holding the intake on.I pulled my intake and swapped it out for the 25hp intake and wanted to try and retorque them.thanks

It gives the torque chart for bolt size. No. 6, 7-10 inch pounds NO 8, 15-22. NO 10, 25-35. NO, 12 35-40. 1/4 in, 60-80. 5/16 in, 120-140. 3/8 220-240. 7/16, 340-360. if the torque is not listed in book use this chart tighten in sequence to 1/3 Then 2/3 ,then torque value.

The Carburetor on my evinrude 30 has one low speed adjustment needle and a intermediate orifice and a high speed orifice. The intermediate orifice is on the back at the top when looking at the carb. Think your looking at the shift handle for forward and reverse yours would be on cables if you have forward controls.

Trying to look as best as I can. But I can’t tell where that fuel line is coming from that goes straight in to the bowl. I have a 25hp 94’ and it has a plug instead of the nipple where yours is I know the main jet is right behind that nipple and I’m wondering if that’s why I can not accelerate with out stalling. Mine also has a primer solenoid to help it cold start little different then yours. But damn near the same

Om Fishing yes I do have electric start. But when I look up the carb it has that barb fitting. On the front of the bowl. But on mine it just has the plug and I feel like who ever had the motor before me bought the wrong part for the carb and didn’t get the barb fitting. But what’s weird to me is that the bowl is filling up but it’s like when I put it in natural and give it gas it just stalls out.

My fuel line from the fuel pump connects to the bottom of the carburetor. The manual primer gets its fuel from the back of the carburetor by the bowl where you said you have a plug.

I have a 25 hp Johnson. It takes a couple tries but when I finally get the motor running it will run fine as long as I keep the throttle up, but it stalls as soon as I try and idle down. I tried to blow and clean the low speed jet out with some carb cleaner. It seemed to help a little but motor is still difficult to start and won't idle but again it will run as long as throttle is open. Do you think I just need to take the carb off and do a complete clean like your vid and should that possibly fix my problem? Thanks! Vid is great. If I need to clean the carb I'm going to use it as it's almost just like my outboard.

That would be where i would start is with the carb cleaning. I would also check the compression if it is low that is another problem.

alright thanks! one side note, I can figure out how to get the carb off but on mine I have one bolt that I can't seem to get to without taking the starter off. Is that normal or am I looking at it the wrong way?

Yes that is why they charge so much to work on stuff. You have to remove parts to get to the one you need to fix.

I've got a question I cant seem to find an answer to. I recently picked up a 1995 Johnson 25 2 cyl. It is elec start, remote steer and has a Johnson command center throttle side mount control. The issue I'm having is, or one issue anyway, if I go full throttle it opens the butter fly so far it passes horizontal (full open position) in continues rotating to almost half closed again. I've one thru and thru trying to make adjustments, find stops, etc and cannot figure this one out. Any ideas? Thanks so much. Your videos are fantastic. Keep it up!

I think it is the throttle control rod right under the flywheel the set screw on the control rod is where you set that. The book says the carburetor throttle plate must be exactly horizontal when the throttle lever is fully advanced.

Awesome! And right after I looked at the engine and saw what you were explaining, I adjusted the rod and set the screw to the new position. Ten minutes later my service manual showed up in the mail =) Works perfectly now. Cant thank you enough. Your vids have helped me tremendously to get this thing not only going, but going correctly. My 2013 evinrude 30hp goes for 5 to 10 seconds full blast then bogs out and shuts off and then can't start it anymore for about an hour or longer what could it be

muddinmoose Right off hand not sure. When it will not start is it getting spark to the plugs is it getting gas to the cyclinders. I haven't worked on to much newer stuff.

Thank you for your videos. I have watched a ton of them over and over but I can not get my 1990 30hp evinrude to run at high rpm. It cranks, runs, idles, but when half throttle, it surges. I have rebuilt the carb, fuel pump, all new fuel hoses, new fuel tank, hose from tank and even new fuel pump. any advice would help before I take to dealer. edit: when at half throttle and above. it surges at 3/4 to full throttle. I am not letting off the throttle, that is the engine surging.

I watched your video. The first thing I would check is the float in the carburetor it look to me that every time the bow would raise the engine would run out of gas after a short run and as soon as it set back down in the water the carburetor would fill back up and run again.
