Will a 16' Canoe Fish the Saltwater Flats? Can we stand in it?

So I made a good trade for a 16' chop back canoe (skanoe) . I'm dying to see if it is stable enough to push pole the flats with someone up front. With both of us standing!! Let the games begin!

That looks like an 82'or 83' model. The originals, in 81', were available as a kit. They lacked the handle at the bow, and the depressed "shelves" at the very back. Otherwise, they're identical. At only 90 pounds, it's not hard to handle. Those three skegs in the center help it track well, but in a swift stream it handles sharp turns like a garbage scow. It's officially rated for 5hp, but a trolling motor can work as well. It's actually 15 ft. 10 inches ... just under the 16ft. length that triggers regulations. I would not advise anyone to stand while fishing from the front seat. There's too much leverage on the rest of the craft. The center section will need a piece of plywood decking over the aluminum tubes. Otherwise the plastic in-between bends a lot when stepped on. Not too stable. We installed a middle seat in ours, they were an option. The original instructions included directions on how to level the boat, and then put a HD garbage bag into a burlap bag, place it at the point of the bow, pour in a bag of Quickcrete and some water. It makes a 70 lb ballast for when one person is aboard. With a gas engine in back, it's really needed. A throttle extension can be helpful, especially In rough conditions. When on your knees just behind the first thwart, with a well distributed load, the little sucker can handle chop like a champ.

I do all of my fishing in canoes. I even bowfish out of them. I highly recommend finding a lighter setup. It'll make it so easy to just toss in the water. You can add all kinds of gear. I have a trolling motor, stabilizers, lighting attachments, rod holders, etc. My 16 footer is 63 lbs My 15 footer is 33 lbs. Definitely worth it. Just toss on top of your car and go.

im with you on the weight! a 15' at 33lbs is super light for a boat that size.

I had that same boat. Put a 7.5 Johnson and it worked wonderful. I even took it out to the rigs just past bob hall pier. I slept in it too in back bay. Sadly I sold it some 15 years ago. Big mistake.

I kayak fish a lot still.... my yak is for quick trips when I have 2 hours or so to kill and I want to get to a wade spot. the canoe is for quick trips with another person sight casting. you can not stand and sight cast out of my skinny fast kayaks and there is no poling another person around in a yak. different boats for different jobs. like shoes!
