This takes me back - I remember struggling with signalling and getting info in 1994 was hard work, manuals, magazines and mates were your best bet. Your 14.4kbps modem was sooo slow and the internet was still mainly text based. Nice feature Master Hellish, good to be reminded how far QOL has come and remember how awesome this game was back in the day.

The ability to build on uneven ground and have retaining walls added was a feature on TTDPatch, Josef Drexler's mod to TTD that eventually led to the creation of OpenTTD, but it wasn't allowed in TTD as sold.

A fun video! I do remember playing the serial two-player mode with my brother when we both set up our PCs on the dining room table, which didn't impress my mum. Would be good to continue the series and see you face some of the late game challenges. Every old vehicle has to be replaced manually, and eventually you'll build a nice new railway line but not be able to buy a train because you've reach the maximum vehicle limit.

Now that there is OpenTTD I can't even imagine playing the original version. So many features are not avaible. Thx for video.

Original TTD has something that OpenTTD lost - simplicity. Like when you noticed that because depo window size = max train length = max station length, there is no need for extra train length indicator in depo. And since the max length is 10, if you really need to establish train length, you can easily "do the math" in your head. A great example of how less is more. There is no question that modern day games need to a) work on modern OS, b) support modern hardware and c) have all those nice to have QoL features in. But with all those mandatory upgrades, OpenTTD comes with a lot of other additions that just make the game more complex. And that is sort of double edged sword. As cool as it is to build huge multi track stations and vehicles with sophisticated orders, suddenly you need to understand hundreds of functions that require hundreds of menu items and windows. It tips gameplay balance from casual to advanced / hardcore and for me it turns me away from the game. I can still watch experts play it, but I can't enjoy it myself.

The reason Train 1 is hardly carrying any passengers is because with only one train on a longish line, the station ratings are low. It's much better to have a couple of short trains than one long train ... but with the primitive signalling, it's really tricky to have _more_ than two trains on a line without it needing constant attention!
@peter65zzfdfh22 сағат бұрын
Really digging into the recesses of my memory but I think you could direct trains to go through a station non stop, so you could effectively make a ‘loop’ on two parallel lines and get all the trains travelling clockwise or anti-clockwise by getting them to go station 1, station 2 without stopping, station 3. And so you put the station 2 on one direction and they’d always choose that line for one direction. Maybe you needed to do the same for the other line, but don’t remember.
@stevieinselby22 сағат бұрын
@peter65zzfdfh TTO didn't have an explicit option to do that. You could put a station down in the middle of nowhere that was only on one line so that it would never accrue or accept any cargo, and use it as a pseudo-waypoint station. If the stations were far enough apart, then using ro-ro stations with trains always going in from the back, and the occasional kink with catch points to put trains back on the correct track, you _could_ build up a reasonably intensive service with multiple trains, and you also need lots of depots to reduce the risk of trains needing a service at the wrong time ... but you did always need to keep an eye on it and be ready to intervene when trains got lost or stuck, which they *definitely* would do fairly regularly.

One of my favorite things about the original Transport Tycoon (non-Deluxe) is the visual design of the user interface. The colors feel less harsh, perhaps, or more playful, than in Deluxe. The thicker borders, rounded corners, and slight texture on the icon buttons, also look lovely.

16:38 is perhaps my least favorite feature. If you play on a difficulty setting with "Disasters" enabled, then any primary industry your company services is doomed to eventually close down for no reason other than the curse of the player company.
@megatronacepticonКүн бұрын
One thing I found interesting when I tried TT Classic was that the tertiary and secondary industries still output small amounts of cargo even if they're not being supplied with their resources, with supplying them simply increasing their output rather than being required to function as in TTD and OpenTTD. I also quite like how stations produce any cargo in range without being asked by a vehicle and I kind of wish OpenTTD had an option to operate like that since it challenges you to either strategically place your stations to dodge cargo you don't want to take or to add it to your network to avoid low station ratings.

OMG, THE OG TT! Have I died and gone to heaven?!? Yes, need and crave more! Check the hot keys for the game and DOSBox, for some games you could "ramp up" the emulated process to effectively give an speed boost on those games that used processor timing for passage of time. Please try TTD and Locomotion too! How about SimuTrans, were there made any decisions on trying that out? Could you delve into the Railroad Tycoon franchise too? It's another Microprose started games series that I spent a lot of time with.

I think my first experience with it may have been TTD but it is also possible I had the original TT first. I just know I have always liked it since the first time playing... I first played it on my 386DX40 DOS PC I bought new in 1992 and would have installed apparently in 1994. Thank you for this video and taking us down memory lane!
