Can I make 31 characters-one for each day in December? I'm gonna give it a try! Not only that, I'll make a video for each one and give each game an "unreview."
The rules are:
1) I have to like it,
2) I have to buy it, and
3) I must do my best to use E-Prime, a linguistic tool that forbids me from using the verb "to be."
Can I make it? Let's find out!

In case it helps anyone decide - Into the Odd is Victorian-inspired fantasy rather than medieval-inspired, with steampunk and weird science elements alongside magic.

Andy Solberg's In the Shadow of the Goat at Chupa is a hex crawl. Fun. Fun. Fun stuff.

While you could take any part of the adventure as its own mini-adventure, they seem to be written to flow from one to the next. I think specifically the Echoes of the Iron Coral isn't an adventure in its own right, but more like random tables on which to roll during the larger adventure. Earlier this week, my group played from the start of the Iron Coral through to where the hex crawl begins. While they all said they enjoyed it and I had fun as the GM/Referee, I did feel that I had to put a bit of work into joining up what's going on in the different parts of the Iron Coral to make any kind of sense. It's also unclear on how the PCs go from being on the Iron Coral (an island) to being in a swampy area (the hex crawl). I'm comfortable using my own imagination as the GM, but I would have liked at least a short explanation that it is expected the GM makes something up, and/or a few suggestions. Presumably the party got to the island on a boat from Bastion, but now they can't just take the boat back and have to trudge through a swamp? I made something up, but I think it could put off new GMs. I liked the system as a whole and I can see what Chris was aiming for. I think my group would be happy to play it again, but wouldn't be rushing to do so. I'm looking forward to playing Mausritter with my group, based on the same system.

I kinda want this for the tables alone tbh

They're so worth it. Cairn and Knave both have tons of tables and Cairn is free, Knave is like 2 bucks. The remastered into the odd rules.

By far my favorite dungeon exploration game, and Chris's GM advice (esp as continued in Electric Bastionland) is GOLD.

Have read any Samuel R. Delany? His first novel, The Jewels of Aptor is along these lines.

I'm going to have t ograb a copy of this. Those charts in the back sound fantastic. I know a lot of people must be into grabbing stuff from one system for their games. My most read article this year is the Top 10 RPG mechanics you should steal for your home game.

Great to see you enthuse!! I won(! Yep and I don't win stuff) a PDF copy of Into the Odd. It's awesome. Along with Troika, these games are more like episodes of the Mighty Boosh than The Rings of Power. BTW: Thanks to your first 31DCC recommendations I (finally) got a physical copy of Steal Away Jordan this week. Such an important game. Fun for fun-sake is important, but we all need to be challenged sometimes. Cheers for all the variety, John.

I am totally loving the Into the Odd based games. Into the Odd, Cairn, and all the rest are absolutely fantastic and definitely scratch that old school itch for me. I've made a few tweaks to it to suit my tastes, but great stuff.

I have Cairn. What is the relationship between Cairn and Into the Odd?

@@theodoredansen6152 Cairn uses the Into the Odd system. It is more explicitly a dungeon crawler than Into the Odd, but it is great. Maus Ritter also uses the same system is awesome if you like things like the Mouse Guard graphic novels.

@@johnathanbingham5117 Mausritter is amazing. Cairn is inspired by Mausritter as much as Knave (and obviously, ItO).
