My argument against Frankenstein's Monster being a zombie: he was never human. He was made out of an amalgamation of parts, some not even from originally living creatures. He was also made specifically out of larger parts to make him easier to assemble, and was much, much larger than a human. Also, he was intelligent and had a lot of human traits. The reason he was scary was almost entirely based off of his looks, and his status as a constant social outcast drove him to be monstrous more than any innate nature.
@MalcontentFlower2 жыл бұрын
Also, he was never dead.
@squngy02 жыл бұрын
His innate nature is debatable, we only have his word for it that he was good originally and he is shown to be capable of lies. He has every reason to try and make Frankenstain think his kind are good by nature. And even if we believe that his account is accurate, by his own words he turns evil fairly quickly and his response is disproportional. In return for being feared and shunned he resorts to murder and contemplates genocide, not something you would expect from someone who was innately good.
@AllTheArtsy2 жыл бұрын
And altho most modern zombies no longer follow this history, zombies are particularly connected to Haitian culture and voodoo. There must be an animating power, usually magic, but now more commonly scientific like a virus, that transforms the human mind and body into a non-living, hollow, now usually violent creature. Frankenstein was not robbed of agency, individuality or life. He was brought to life. His dread is being brought unwillingly into existence, rather than the loss of self.

I love the concept of Goblin Slayer, where the author really delves into the trouble goblins can present if left unchecked, which they often are because of their cannon-fodder status. Because they aren't deemed worth the effort of more seasoned adventurers, it's often newer, misguided adventurers that try to take them on subsequently and fall victim to the gobbo's merciless brutality. It's also nice how the author makes a point of the fact that, sure, slaying a dragon might be difficult and gain you a lot of prestige, but rooting out the nest of goblins that's terrorizing a local farmstead is what's actually beneficial to the average person of that setting as far as their day-to-day life is concerned. There's more to it than that, of course, but it does a great job of reflecting on the hypocrisy and narcissisms inherent to the traditional idea of 'adventuring' in fantasy settings.

@JimCullen2 жыл бұрын
I like them, but I do think that they've been done very...strangely. "Major" spoilers are marked for something that, to me, was obvious from pretty much page one (I say this as someone reading the series for the first time right now). The show tries to hide the reveal as long as possible, but in the book it was pretty obvious to anyone with even _vague_ awareness of literary tropes. Then "slight" spoilers for two things relating to myrddraal. One of which I haven't arrived at yet but it doesn't feel like a big deal, and the other which seems to me quite a bit bigger than the one marked "major". And then some talk about ogier later on that doesn't get a spoiler warning _at all,_ but which I would have thought was the biggest spoiler of all.

One of my favorite fantasy creatures is the "ancient sci-fi machines". Like the dwemer technology in the Elder Scrolls or a lot of the things you find in the Legend of Zelda. I just love the idea of how technology would work in a fantasy setting. How science would incorperate magic into it's use is something that has always struck a chord with me. I also really like the "discovering an ancient long-gone culture" trope. I know this stretches the definition of "creatures" but I find they often fulfills the same role, behaviour and purpose.

Ugarls from eragon are my favorite type of bad-guy-monster-race because they start put like evil orcs that everyone hates, but the evolve and become more personable and we have to learn to accept their culture at the same time as eragon does. Beautifully done

I wouldn’t pick them as my favorite, but I couldn’t agree you more on how our perspective of the Urgarls changed.

5. Dragons-Basically what they said. 4. white walkers-feel like zombies but upgraded and better. 3. Maiar- I just love the Mair in LOTR. They are so cool and I don’t know. It’s just awesome. 2. Elves- I just want to be one and they are cool. 1. Mistborn- I mean the Mistborn are amazing. I don’t know what to say.

23:50 yes! The Gardeners were one of my favorite disturbing reveals in the series for me. And agreed with Daniel, I'd love more prequel-type back story of the Ogier and particularly the Gardeners!

Maybe we can get the author of the last 3 books to revisit the WoT world and have him write it; particularly the history of the Seanchan!? Someone send him a link to this video!

I guess you won't ever read this on an older video like this one Brandon, but the scene with Talmanes had me going back to it several times and relistening to it, because I just couldn't get enough of the dry humor even in the face of death. I even told some friends who had nothing to do with WoT about this sequence, which I usually don't because I know I can't do them justice. Absolutely amazing work.

I always feel like zombies are wildly underutilized in the fantasy genre. I would love more medieval zombie focused stories. Kind of like Kingdom on Netflix.
@ovrair63402 жыл бұрын
It's not medieval, but I'm currently running a zombie apocalypse western sci-fi Rpg campaign. I've always liked the idea of zombies being in setting that isn't modern day, and a medieval zombie apocalypse film would be *Soo* good

Try the Beyonders series by Brandon Mull! While he does not do zombies per se, he does have a type of worm that animates dead corpses with their memories somewhat intact, but the brain of that person degenerates over time. While it is a YA/Juvenile series and the magic system is a bit basic, I still think this series holds up remarkably well even as an adult!!

Loved the discussion. BTW The dybbuk is pronounced Di - Buk, and as Daniel said, it's very well known in Jewish folklore
@MRosen613 Жыл бұрын
Interesting points about a Dybbuk is that it's a soul who was so wicked, it wasn't even allowed into hell, so is forced to wander for eternity while being beaten by angels, who only stop on the Sabbath or if it escapes through possesing a body, something that i can only do if that person it chooses to posses makes himself unintentionally available through committing a sin.

In no particular order I think my top 5 would be werewolves, dragons, golems, Phoenix, and griffon. Such cool creatures that have so many possible interpretations! Werewolves are the scariest to me and the joke-ish reason I always give people for why they’re scarier than vampires to me is that “I feel like I could reason with a vampire so my chances against one are better. Whereas a werewolf is a mindless killing machine that is always in a bloodlust frenzy. You can’t outrun it and you can’t hide from it. If it smells you, you’re toast.” Besides, vamps have so many weaknesses: sunlight, wooden stakes, silver. Plus they aren’t visible in mirrors and you have to invite them inside your home.

1:50 So yeah, Tolkien basically wrote Silmarillion stuff separate of everything. He wrote The Hobbit for his children and got it published by persuasion. Publisher asked for a sequel, so he gave The Silmarillion (but no plot so lolz). At that point he wrote LOTR and adjusted the Silmarillion to be in the Hobbit universe. Surely this is what was behind the comments though lol So hence, goblins and orcs become synonymous, and goblin-men become orc-men and then Uruk-Hai. At once elves were gnomes. Combination can be fickle I suppose :P
@frankbroussard39522 жыл бұрын
I think the peak version of Goblins were in the Riyria Revelations. They were smart, they'd keep fighting even if mortally wounded, were compared to monkeys and ants because of their numbers and how dexterous they were, and would puff up like frogs if pissed off. They also had a tribal culture with different classes, like witch doctor or warrior. Definitely peak cannon fodder characters.
