Some language context for you: Merry is the shortened phonetic pronunciation of 瑪莉歐 (Ma-Li-Oh) which is Mario. The first game released with Mario is Mario Bros. which is shortened to 瑪莉1 (or Merry 1) and Super Mario Bros. is the second game so therefore, 瑪莉2 (Merry 2). 瑪莉 is also the phonetic pronunciation of the name Mary. And since Mary is a female first name, they went with Merry. Why you ask me? Beats the heck out of me since Engrish is not their strong suit in the first place. The producers of these bootlegged games certainly do not intend for these games to be sold in areas outside of Taiwan/China. So ha ha! :-) Hope this helps! P.S. Pack Man (or Pacman)'s translation into Goblin: The Chinese name for Pacman is 小精靈 (xiao jing ling) or little goblin... and Dajin is the Chinese name for Donkey Kong. 大金剛 (da jin gang). And the five chess games's original name is "GO." Which is 五子棋 in Chinese. Not weird if you understand the language and how it gets translated back and forth to lose its original meaning...

Asian translation of English words, or vise versa for that matter, can get really interesting to say the least. I'm reminded of this every time I read a plot outline to an anime. "They must hunt for the blue and save Princess for happy sky." That was made up but it gets that weird. As you said, if you add some context it makes perfect sense. Very interesting, Thanks for the info.

How about you make a video on the history of bootlegged games?
@zenoblues77875 жыл бұрын
I doubt it's even possible to do that since the majority of bootlegs come from obscure Chinese companies. I'm not say it's impossible but these companies intentionally tried to hide their existence and most knowledge about them would probably be in untranslated Mandarin.

Holy Shit!!! I played these games in India in the mid to late 90's. We didn't really have NES, and Famicoms, but rather these bootleg weird name consoles and we generally bought games in these types of cartridges. Sometimes they would be 100 in 1, or if I'm remembering correctly, 1000 in 1, which they somehow managed by making multiple levels of Mario, etc. as 1 game. This is insane. I never thought I'd ever see something like this again. After I moved to the US in 2000, I got a Gameboy color (which I had seen in India but was just too much to afford). The only handheld we had was a tetris handheld. And I remember every single one of these games. Sometimes we have single game cart also. I remember Excitebike, Contra (multiple ones) and some others. TMNT? I dunno. Thanks for a nostalgia trip down memory lane.

Aeizaz Sheikh haha, exactly my feelings! With one difference I played it on very popular in Russia bootleg copy of Famicon called Dendy.
@ogSquink6 жыл бұрын
I had the exact same thing in the early 90s in South Africa. We had an exact famicom lookalike, although it wasn't a famicom and most of our games were 30-in-1 or 101-in-1. The large ones tended to only have about 10 to 30 games on it, and the rest of the 90 or so 'games' would just be the originals repeated, but starting on another level, or with more lives or something. I was lucky enough to get an actual Sega Megadrive for my 6th birthday, but unfortunately we couldn't get any brand new games here. All my games came from the local second-hand store.I remember really wanting to play Sonic 3 because I heard you could breathe underwater and that seemed like the coolest thing at the time. Every weekend I would go with my dad to the second hand store to see if someone had traded in a copy, and sometimes one would be available. We'd snatch it up quickly, only to get home and find that the cartridge was damaged and then have to return it. A couple of years later, round about the time I was 10/11, I saved up for 6 months to buy a Gameboy Color so I could play Pokemon. I had just enough money left over to buy a 2 in 1 cartridge of Pokemon Gold and Silver.I was so excited, only when I got home to play it I found out it was a terribly translated Japanese bootleg with several weird differences from my friend's versions. I still played the heck out of it though. Through the years though I lost all those consoles, however I managed to pick up a bootlegged famicom with some bootleg cartridges a while ago from a local Indian shop, and I procured a Megadrive with about 15 games from a friend of a friend who was throwing it away. Unfortunately I have no cables or controllers for the Megadrive. I also ran into a homeless guy who was trying to sell a Gameboy Color with a 22 in 1 cartridge, so I managed to get that one real cheap. Unfortunately the battery in the cartridge is dead, so I can't play Pokemon on it anymore :( Good times!
@Kirby13135 жыл бұрын
I had a distaste for these bootlegs until I started hearing stories like this. If a Russian, a South African and an Indian can all expirence classic games for cheap where Nintendo doesn't release officially, it is worth the bad quality and the questionable idea of profiting off of other people's work.

Yep, the text on the cartridge is Mandarin Chinese, and judging from the fact that it uses Traditional Chinese characters, this was a Taiwanese-made bootleg. I have to admit we did that a lot back in the 1980s, basically the entire Taiwanese computer and IT industry got started from reverse engineering everything back in the day. Also, it makes sense that many of the games on the cartridge weren't released on NES in North America (well it is on a Famicom cartridge in any case), since Taiwan imported the Japanese Famicom (we call it 紅白機, "red-white machine") and its games, and not the North American NES - and of course we had bootleg Famicom consoles as well! I remember when I came back to Taiwan from Canada in 1993, I was really annoyed that I couldn't get any new games for my NES, but my mom wouldn't let me buy a Famicom.

I used to have a chinese famiclone with a bunch of bootleg cartridges as a kid, one of which was named "76 in 1". It had Mr. Mary, Macross, Karateka, Arabian, and many other famicom exclusives not mentioned in this video (although I never lived in japan or any of the countries around the region), which my sister and I played the crap out of. The weird thing about these bootleg games is that sometimes the game title is not the only think that's changed, but the games themselves is slightly modified as well. I remember Luigi having infinite lives in Mr. Mary, and Contra allowing you to select the stage in the title screen, for example. But the craziest thing was that other cartridges we had, which was literally called "9999999 in 1", implying that the cartridge contained 9999999 games. That's technically impossible of course, but you could definitely find 9999999 titles in the starting menu if you took your time and scrolled through all the pages, but they were just slightly altered versions of five or six games. For example, one of those five or six games was super mario bros. The first one on the list was your regular super mario bros, the one on the next page let you start with nine lives, the one on the next page would let you fly up as long as you held the jump button, so and so on. You could think of them as 9999999 famicom games that had game genie codes preinstalled. It was so stupid but so much fun at the same time, and made our childhood a hundred times better.

10:48 Either "Reversi" or "Othello" is fine.
@TheMrRuttazzo6 жыл бұрын
Except that it's neither Reversi nor Othello, but a different game entirely. Traditional Japanese sort of strategy board game simply named "go", which translates to "5", which is why they called the game "FiveChess" on the bootleg.

+Whompy Whomperson It's really not that bad at all. I mean, it's fast food burgers, so if you're not a fan of that kind of thing, then you won't like it. But in terms of burger joints, it's pretty good.

Had several of these bootleg compilations as a kid. If not for this I never would've been able to play video games.

I really hated the cover and box art of the 8bit era. The games looked so awesome and then when you got home and popped the game into your famicom you felt so fucking cheated! That's how I got suckered into buying mappy. Man was I dissapointed.

Nice job. The chess-like game you referred to is a Japanese game called Go. Karateka was released in North America-- for the Atari 7800 around 1987.

OMG!! This cart was actually a huge part of my formative gaming years! Still have it. Except mine's beige, the label's different, and it came with an NES adapter thing. We barely had any games for our NES back then, so it seemed pretty great at the time. I still have no idea how that thing made it's way to a corner video store in eastern Canada in the 80s... but at least now I know the origin story of the menu screen.
