I sit and watch talk and you take back with you into the good old days when life was simple. They really give me peace and joy to where I am giggling. Please continue to be yourself. Thank you so much for sharing! Your collection is wonderful! My paternal grandmother (born in the 1890s) told me how they would use umbrellas for self defense.... make sure the shaft was made of good steel, get one of the menfolk in your family to grind it to a nice solid, sharp point. If you were accosted then you jabbed the tip into the top of their foot! A well sharpened tip will go right through a leather shoe. If you were a strong gal then it could go all the way through the foot and into the shoe sole. I tell you, those Edwardian era women did not mess around! Thank you again Granny! Stay safe.

You are an amazing lady! I admire people that have lived life because they always have important lessons and interesting stories to tell us not to mention all that can be learned from all the experiences they have had in life. I was born in the early 60’s and I always say I want to go back and live in those years because we live in terrible times and it’s true that times were much better back then. Keep the videos and stories coming as they are greatly appreciated..cheers! Brian . PS those are some beautiful umbrellas you have in your collection…

Most of what I have was collected several years ago. I still collect small things. What I need is a rich uncle to leave me a beautiful victorian house to enjoy and ‘show and tell’. You don’t get too old to collect and share. Umbrellas’ is a great item to collect. Wouldn’t a “Judy Garland Parade” of ladies umbrellas be beautiful?

Ok now would love to see Jan’s collection too! This was fascinating! Now I thought I’d tell you how I cleaned my old bell shaped lampshade, although the fabric isn’t as old as your umbrellas. I had hunted for the right shape shade for years for my grandma’s lamp. I really needed to clean that shade after letting people smoke around it twenty years ago. This KZbin vid pointed me in the right direction. It’s called “How to clean a fabric lampshade” by “C.” I had to adapt his 5 gal bucket to a medium sized trash can so the whole thing would be submerged at once. My grandchild did it for me, as I was too sick to do it. It looks brand new! Now like I said, the fabric of my shade isn’t as old as the fabric of your umbrellas, but you’re so clever, I know you can adapt his ideas perhaps with a milder cleaner than oxyclean. (Maybe oxy IS mild, I don’t know.) I have a handheld shower attachment which made filling the trash can in the tub easy. And then just tip it over to empty.

I started to watch your second video and came to this one first. I'm LOVING your umbrellas!! You just said Jane Seymour in Somewhere In Time and my jaw dropped! My favorite movie of all time~!! Saw it on cable in the very early '80's with my mom and we couldn't stop baawling!!! For fifteen minutes or so we stood in our kitchen when it was over going through kleenexes like crazy. We'd stop crying, look at each other and start again!!! Oh, tell me it's one of your favorites!

Just a thought to clean your umbrellas. What about using baby detergent or woollight? Place the umbrella in the bathtub. Scrub w/a soft cloth, rinse w/the shower. Hang dry using the shower rod or door inside of the shower. That way you wouldn't have a wet floor.

Wow! What fun! The very first umbrella you shared was my absolute favorite, with that amazing handle! Here's a tip to see if something is bakelite or not: hold it in a little rag and rub, get some real friction going, then smell the item. If it smells like formaldehyde (remember old science class?) then it is 100% bakelite!
