Mackinac Island, Michigan sure is a fun place to fly/visit. Horses, bikes, restaurants, fudge, hiking, exploring, swimming...complete. This video shows the pretty flight back home from Mackinac along Lake Michigan's upper shore, by the U.P. of Michigan and along Wisconsin's eastern shore.

I was telling my flight instructor about you guys and he said, oh yeah, I have met them before...in the Bahamas.. I was telling him about this couple where the husband is a pilot but the wife does a lot of the rafio traffic. And I said " She's amazing to be that good and not even a pilot." I told him it was a little while before I found out yall are both controllers.. He got a big laugh out of my story... his name is Lance Flynn..flying a 414..

so that is ''why'' it seems that some of the controllers they are talking to ''give them a *hard* time'' eh??? cuz they KNOW THEM AND WORK WITH THEM????????? ;) lol splains a few of the comments in *more* than a couple vids hehhehehe ;)

8:57 Kevin, if you adjust your engine RPMs just a bit you might be able to get them to appear that they are still on video. Just pick a multiple of your FPS rates that your using on your cam. Once you get there they will appear to stop. Its a cool trick to see how sync'd your props are as well as they should both be stopped at the same time. (Just fun for passing a little time while x-country flying!!) Great job on the videos.

@@ronniegreen3513 I lived in Alabama for 8 years, and now have lived in Florida for almost 9 years. It's not that the skies aren't clear, it's that they are rarely dry and blue like they are in this video. A lot of haze in the south, compared to the northern states. I had a friend who learned how to fly in Colorado and Utah. It wasn't uncommon for him to have visibility well over 100 miles in that dry mountain air. It's uncommon to have visibility over 20 miles for much of the year down here.

Glad you're enjoying the channel! I started out in a 152...fun planes for sure. 310's do have some good value vs other planes in the same load hauling/speed category. If you ever get serious about it, I'd suggest joining the Twin Cessna Flyer. It's the owners group so to speak. They have an awesome message board and help steer new owners in the right directions.

1. When I learned to fly in 1979, my dream plane was a 310. Yours gives me hot flashes; just about the sexiest thing in the sky! A plane as pretty as yours needs a name...SONGBIRD! No, wait, that's already taken...SILVER WINGS! Wait, that's me, well, you get the idea! 2. I've been to the island before, but by ferry. Flying there is on the bucket list. But I fly Archers and Skyhawks; by the time I got there from 3CK, I'd be old enough to collect Social Security. 3. Upper Wisconsin? I thought it was upper Michigan... 4. That's not the original nose, is it? Radar cone? My eyes going bad? Doesn't look like the beak I remember on the other 310's I lust after. 5. If you're looking for a place to fly, I have an idea for you. Three weeks ago, a buddy and I flew out to Mason City, Iowa (KMCW) and checked out the last place Buddy Holly (Peggy Sue, That'll be the Day), the Big Bopper (Chantilly Lace), and Ritchie Valens (Donna, La Bamba) played before they left this world in a Bonanza - the Surf Ballroom. The ballroom has a small rock and roll museum - it's small, but kind of cool because they kept the place like it was in 1959. in the Green Room, you can see all the famous bands and Rock and Roll stars' signatures on the wall. Everything from Molly Hatchet to Santana to ZZ Top (and of course earlier/older stars). Lots of people have performed there. We even visited the crash site, and the FBO - Northern Iowa Flying Service - gave us a crew car ALL DAY and even printed up a map on how to get to the crash site - sounds morbid, but if you're into music, this is history, man! But be forewarned - after about 2 hours there, and another out to the crash site (driving is about 10 minutes, then you walk on uneven ground for about a quarter mile or more in to a corn field where the farmer has kept a path cut for us, you're going to be ready to go back home. There is NOTHING else out there but corn, a lot of John Deere Green and pretty much nothing else (unless you go into Mason City - the Surf Ballroom is actually in Clear Lake - 10 minutes from KMCW). I rent from Blue Skies Flying Services at 3CK, and we took N456ER (a restart Cessna 172) out there. By Skyhawk, it's a 2 hour flight, by 310 at the warp speeds you cruise at, should be about an hour or less...what's it like to see the colors of the earth change because of the Doppler Effect on account of your cruise speeds?

I did a circle of Lake Michigan couple summers ago inside 24 hours. I left VPZ in my 1957 172 in the afternoon, met my brother on vacation in Harbor Springs, dinner and overnight. Boats, rather yachts like I have never seen. Also, the Beech Starship belonging to the guy who bought out the inventory was on the ramp. Departing 10 the next morning, traced your same route, only 3000 ft. Overflew Mackinac, had to go home, will be back! I had the impression how very remote the UP looks. The islands like stepping stones to Door Co were really amazing. I stopped at Manitowoc and found it very general aviation friendly, had the Swift fuel my bird likes. Finishing off with the Chicago Skyline...

Are you pretty decent with short strips with tall trees on both ends? If so you should visit Beaver Island. I lived there for many years and it's an absolutely amazing place. Couple hundred year round locals. There's a reasonably sized airport there, SJX, but it's pretty far from town in the middle of nowhere. So you'd be basically stuck there. Theres a smaller private airport 6Y8, Welke, that's much closer to town. You can land there, and they sell fuel during like regular 9-5 hours, sometimes later, during the summer times. Just keep an eye out for the BN Islanders making straight in approaches like a bat out of hell, tiny commuter airline. Tell them a friend of Paul Welke recommended it to you. The paved strip is about 2500 feet long and not particularly flat. Or wide. Lol. They actually do have a pretty big maintenance shop there for the fleet of islanders, major airframe and power plant, which isn't really something you'd expect on Beaver Island at the smaller airport. Paul himself rebuilt an old school apache, and he loves some good pilot talk if you catch him around the airport.

Y'all should come down south to St. Simons Island and/or Jekyll Island...2 of Georgia's Islands which have nice runways. I've heard from pilot friends that St. Simons is better to land at as it has a very long runway. I know Jekyll provides pilots with Golf Cart to move around the Island on, but there is certainly a lot more to see and do on St. Simons...Great Eateries there. And the Weather is usually perfect down here. Of course, during the summer months, there are almost always popup afternoon thunderstorms. Aside from that, the climate is perfect. Fun in the Sun!

I own property just off the lake on “The Garden” and often see numerous small planes following the shoreline like you did when I’m there. Given the views in your video I now understand why. Gorgeous.

Mackinac is a cool trip for sure! On your way down the west shore you flew over the airports my son and I use for fun and to maintain currency. My home field of Appleton ATW is about 15 minutes west of Manitowoc. Believe it or not, MTW is non towered and has a functioning ILS you can use all by yourself for practice. Pretty country for this displaced Texan. Winters are very cold but you eventually adapt.

I'm pretty sure the rockets they were launching were high powered rockets that require an FAA waiver to fly. They have different altitude limits depending on the kind of rockets they are launching, but they can easily reach 9000 feet, and actually much higher.

I said the same thing when we landed on 4 Oct.........did someone let their dog loose......hahaha! We flew the same route going to the island since we were visiting family in WI. Going up and over the west side of Lake Michigan, Sturgeon Bay etc. was gorgeous with the fall colors. We stayed at the Bicycle Inn this time. Had a great room rate for the end of the season, but no water view or view of main street. We prefer staying at Mission Point in a water view room, but have considered the Iroquois to try next time. Yes they do haunted tours on the island. You can sign up for them at the Bicycle Inn. We have never stayed at the Grand, but have enjoyed cocktails at the Cuppola Bar at the very top. You guys would enjoy that next time. Take a week long trip next time........or book a winter stay. Most everything is shut down for the year. There are a few places that stay open though. It's a much different feel in the dead of winter. Think The Shining....very quiet and serene. Another good one Kevin and Jaime!

Hey Kevin, loved this video, like I said on your previous Mackinac Island video you need to start planing for July next year during the Chicago to Mackinac Island sailboat race, I've seen a few finishes from shore on Mackinac Island, but it would be awesome to see from the air. Tell Jamie to call the Grand Hotel today if it's not already too late to book your room.

Obvious how all your technology gives you so much more safety than me doing VFR in a 152 . Time to move up..

If you go to 14:03 and pause the video, look on the very right side of the video half way up (just above the engine cowling)....You'll see a whitish looking area, that is where the Avery junkyard is.

Nicely done. We're from Michigan and miss the area - now down in Florida. Working on ground school now. Hope to get up in the air soon. Love the Mackinac area. Great job with the video. Love the lakes.

We were there last year on the 4th of July. It was a ton of fun. We stayed in a motel right on the main strip and watched the fireworks first on the mainland followed by the island. Mackinaw City spelling was changed to mirror more of the way it sounds. Mackinac is the proper spelling from the original inhabitants of the region.

I drove around Lake Michigan. Thanks for the view from above. Mackinac Island is sparse on the interior. The Governor has a mansion state house there.
