Nice flight !!!!! I have to say that I really enjoy getting to hear your communications where you are controllers. That's correct about the tethered blimp. I lived in Marathon for three years in the early 90's and it was there then too and locals refer to it as "Fat Albert"!

Hello. Not sure if anyone has answered about the balloon you were talking about in Key West. It is a multi faceted balloon used for communications, weather, and radar. There are a few other things it can do, but I am not sure if I should say them on KZbin. I worked with these types balloons while I was deployed to Afghanistan. I used them to extend radio coverage for the troops on the ground. They are pretty cool and surprisingly larger than you would think. Hope that helps. Love your videos, they have really encouraged me to pursue my pilot's licence. :)

Smooth flight there but ATC seemed out of sorts but you made a very smooth landing.

"Fat Albert" there are actually two TARS blimps at Cudjoe Key, according to the Air Force. Both are low-level surveillance systems. @7:15 The TARS is the RADAR balloon you are talking about. The USAF used to own them and used them for air surveillance, but it was far more useful to border patrol, so the equipment / program was transferred to Homeland Defense and US Border Patrol agencies. It does contain a downward looking radar that aids tremendously in low altitude traffic. Clearly, the huge tether cable would be a bad day to run into with your GA aircraft, so respect for their restricted airspace boundaries is prudent. There are a few in the Florida gulf area, and a few more in the SW Texas area. Its basically a normal radar that is mounted upside-down. So what would normally be covering near-horizon to some angle upwards, these are covering that space near level altitude to all space below.

Hi from Belgium! I like your videos, especially to improve my ATC listening skills. At 2:40 during taxi you ask about the tower taking care of the ‘point out ‘ and tower responds at 3:08 unable to do point out at this time. What does that mean? Never heard that on ATC before. Thanks!
@310Pilot5 жыл бұрын
Hello Arno! Glad you're enjoying the channel. "point out" isn't a typical pilot to ATC term. Jaime and I are both air traffic controllers. "Point out" is a controller to controller term that allows an aircraft under one controllers control to transition through another controllers airspace without transferring them to the other controller. I was asking if he would call the Navy Tower and get us approved to transition through their airspace since it was so close to the departure end. Since he wasn't able to, we departed straight north until we could get approval from the Navy controller. Hope that makes sense.
