Love hearing your take on things. Fun part is hearing what you think. From my perspective(industrial electrical engineering) some of the stuff seems so trivial and irrelevant. However, it is fun to to see what electricians(I am not an electrician) deal with or should be prepared to deal with. For me, I have maybe 20 or so pages booked marked in any NEC book for things that affect me only. Thanks for doing these things.

A few years ago while attending one of our 8 yearly IAEI continuing education classes we had a brilliant instructor from UL labs sitting at our table before class who started asking our options on some common things most sparkies do. He asked if it was okay to drill say a 7/8" hole for a 1 /2" connector in the side of a plastic single gang box or a metal bell box that had the single hub already used. Told us it was not legal. Yes I have done this numerous times to extend a circuit. Think if its in a wet or damp location and you use sealing rings or sealing lick nuts it should be allowed.

Does this rule make the standard metal old work (cut in) boxes illegal?

The NEC must do something with the combination 120 volt duplex receptacles with built-in USB charging ports. Think the hospital grade TR receptacles with USB charging ports were almost 2" deep ( HUBBELLS ).
