Great alternative! I use Inkscape to handle converting images to vectors. Just import the image, select trace bitmap, select the way you want to trace it (by color, brightness, grey scale, and others). I always make sure to uncheck the "smooth" option as I find it takes away from the quality of the vector. I also make sure that "remove background" is checked. Finish it up by deleting the old image. It can be finicky with full color images, but adjusting the color count helps. You can delete the ones that you do not need for the desired look of the vector.
