I use star-line 38-55 brass and reform with Lee 32-40 dies, makes great full length 32-40 cases. I'm shooting in a custom made single shot bolt action rifle, brass schuetzen style butt plate double set triggers an adjustable palmrest with a 28-inch octagon barrel, the wood is a full-figured beautiful perch belly style stock. I'm shooting relatively light loads with breech seated 220 grain cast bullets. The gun shoots a whole lot better than I can shoot. I think it's great you're shooting a classic cartridge with a classic style gun I would like to see a lot more of it

Johnny, I took a look at "Pet loads" by Ken Waters' on this cartridge, it was about four pages of information. it is a popular round that people who appreciate it and understand it enjoys. there are some hard followers of this round because of its accuracy potential and the challenge of the use of home-brewed cast bullets, it is one of those where 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 lead tin mixtures and paraffin beeswax and vaseline (Super soft lube) is used. in my opinion, it is a whole other foundation of the reloading practice and art. (Maybe this is what your grandfather was getting into with this rifle-round-projectile area of the craft). -Dave

I have his old copy of Pet Loads so I'll be sure and read through the .32-40 section. His notes show that he was definitely trying some interesting things. Several types of lubes, teflon tape patching, case fillers, and probably a bunch more things if I read though everything closer. I will definitely be circling back to this gun before too long! Thanks, man.

The Lyman #50 manual has some .32-40 data, and their Cast Bullet Handbook has cast bullet data for 165, 170 and 200 grain cast bullets, including black powder and Pyrodex. Starline makes long (2.125") .38-55 brass that can be formed to correct length .32-40...that is, when it's in stock. Looking forward to some cast bullet loads through the rifle, be interesting to see what it can do.

@@JohnnysReloadingBench Just FYI, the 51st edition has a limited selection of load data for the .32-40. Two bullet selections: 170 Hornady FP, and 165gr cast. They have RX7 and IMR 4198 for both, and only IMR 3031 for the cast bullet. There's more for powder selection, but not by much.

I want to thank you for sending the Falling Block Works document. I have a rifle, built on a J action, chambered in .219 Donaldson Wasp. Again thanks for the PDF.

I would totally have to take that out and bring home a deer. Great shooting! My dad has a couple of .32 rimfires that I have have always wanted to get back in action. One is a rolling block of my great grandfathers which would be pretty easy with a case with an offset primer hole for .22 blanks, but my grandfather had a pump action that I am stumped on. It was a bit entertaining watching that dobber try to explore the top of the die. “Nope! Not here.”. Lol. Those kind only sting you if you try capturing them. I tried when I was a kid. Yes. @@robertfree1908 when I was young and dumb, we used to go out on the lawn and very lightly put our bare feet on honey bees feeding on clover. I have an 1894 Winchester rifle, round barrel half mag made in 1909. I handloaded some 170 grain jacketed soft point bullets in it and the first fall I had it I shot a decent size 5 point buck (big buck on his way out as far as years go). I hit the deer in the neck and it went maybe a couple hundred yards before dropping. It's nice to get these old guns back in action. I've got an even older 1894 Winchester in .38-55 I've hunted with a bit but haven't taken a deer with, this year my son wants to take my 1888 Trapdoor Springfield out hunting. I've also got a .50-70 Sharps carbine I plan on doing some hunting with.

love the 32-40, here in Australia there are a lot of old Winchester lever action model 1894 in this calibre, I have two 1894 button magazine 26'' rifles. One has a round barrel the other an octagon, I also have a beautiful Winchester/Miroku limited series 32-40 1885 High Wall which is quite rare. If you load up the 32-40 with rifle powder the small capacity case is hard to overload, in a strong action loaded up it's only 150/200 fps behind a 30-30. It's challenging calibre to load with lead pills as oversize lead bullets needed to squeeze down to the .321 groove, lead bullets sized to .3225 are tight in the SAAMI spec chambers. Even my old Winchester 94's are very accurate! thanks for your video.

Used to breech seat a 209gr Jones PB bullet for mine, shot 3/4MOA at 100, best I shot with it at 200 was a 248/250 on the Coors 1-1/2" 200 bull. Used AA9 in it, RP 6-1/2, 1400fps.. 100 rds of WW brass was good for 200+ shots ea on it, as it was never sized, just fireformed. Used Emmert's lube in it. Put a solid 10K rounds thru it. Browning 1885 w/28" RKS octagon bull barrel. Built my own stock for it out of curly maple with a double pronged hook buttplate. That JW ammo is worth a lot of money to the Win JW owners, you might be surprised what they'd pay for it. I know I wouldn't shoot it and treat the box like gold.
