Thank you to those people who gave me a heads up that Laurie Lee was a man - my mistake! I try to research the books in my hauls as thoroughly as possible, but I haven't read them yet, so mistakes happen sometimes. I'm very grateful to all of you for making sure I have the correct information!

Olive, you are fabulous! I love your reviews and recommendations. Now, please explain how you find time to read so many books! How many books do you read at once? 😀

What a fabulous haul! Roy Porter is a big name in the vaguely academic subgenre 'medical humanities'. I used to work at a university medical school where some of the professors were trying to wangle more humanities into the curriculum. (clinicians and scientists are rarely on board for that). I think 'Blood and Guts' might be a shortened version of his tome called 'The Greatest Benefit to Mankind: a medical history of humanity'. He also wrote a great sounding book about madness which I want to read.

Catch and kill was one of the best books I read this year. Also I watched the podcast tapes that followed up the book. There is another book on same topic called She Said , haven't read it , but would love the comparison. And the movie is being released based on She Said book this year about Harvey scandal.

I'm excited to hear your thoughts on The Royal Society, it's been on my tbr for a while! Gory Details fell kind of flat for me. There are some interesting chapters, but if you're pretty into the science world many of stories are ones you've heard before. The cover does glow in the dark though so that's fun

I must thank you Olive for two books you recommended that I would definitely not have read that I enjoyed very much. The Poisoner’s Hand Book and the one about the victims of Jack the Ripper. I know I am a slow reader. A few years back I went through a period of wanting to read a biography of Louisa May Alcott not so much because of the fiction she wrote but because I knew she was an interesting person. Then I found a biography by Susan Cheever. I really enjoyed that. Another one I read a few years ago was Daphne DuMaurier and her sisters. I don’t remember the author. I think that would interest you if you haven’t already read it. I got a biography of H G Wells for Christmas by Claire Tomalin. I read that in a few days. It was very interesting. I am currently reading Uprooted on your recommendation. I will be looking for some of those science books you recommended. It’s so hard. It takes me a long to read them. I wish I could go faster.

Per this book haul, I foresee culinary and medical prompts for Non-fiction November. Due to your earlier comprehensive review, I really enjoyed reading “Mrs. March”. Hitchcock would have had a field day with the story. Not only does it have shadings of Rebecca but also there’s a hint of Gaslight. And, yes, I coveted those green gloves.

Looking forward to Nick and Catch and Kill. Just added them to my TBR list. Since we're heading into football season, I recommend Collision of Wills, by Jack Gilden. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed a book about football, since I'm not a fan of the sport. His writing is truly cinematic and I found his descriptions of the games so compelling.

Love this video and your channel, which I am fairly new to. I know your main focus is on nonfiction, but what appeals especially to me is that you review both fiction and nonfiction, because my reading is very mixed. (Lots of politics.) Catch and Kill is going on my TBR list. I have three (more!) recommendations for nonfiction November if you haven't read them. Hypatia's Heritage: A History of Women in Science from Antiquity to the Late Nineteenth Century; Galileo's Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith and Love; and Einstein in Love (A Scientific Romance).

1:25 I’m more picky when it comes to movie book covers. I feel like they generally don’t look as good as the original book covers, and even when they do look good it gets ruined by those “now a motion picture” stamps.

I struggled with Matrix. The real Marie de France wasn’t a nun, and there’s no indication that she had a relationship with Queen Eleanor (for lesser-known historical figures, I do think it’s best not to clutter the Google record with false information). It was also hard for me, as a religious minority, to be on the side of a Christian character and root for her growing faith during the Crusades. If I can extrapolate, it just seemed like the author wanted to write a positive story about the church during a troubling era, and she took too many liberties with real people to accomplish that. The known information about the real Marie is fascinating - there’s no reason to have completely fabricated her story in this way.
