@Barefoot Doctors Sailing - this week we continue to work our way through the issues created by the destruction of our Leopard 50 Catamaran by fire. We start to look at the risks of fire for yachties and how to protect ourselves - essential info! We discuss the bereavement process that everyone goes through after significant losses and also what we are planning for the future.
Two weeks ago, we made an amazing free offer for medical assistance to any cruising yachtie on the water anywhere in the world who needs advice if they have a possible skin cancer. We can assess the the risk and what action needs to be taken and the timeframes required! No cost, no catches, just sharing our experience for the broader good.... PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!!!
Binge watch and come barefoot with us as we travel and explore the planet, mostly from the water but sometimes through the minds of others as we provide aid and support where needed through the amazing TUFMINDS solutions!
The free TUFMINDS program is released as a smartphone program under the Exqisit Life Foundation Charity, a registered not for profit and requires financial support to fund the free program. TUFMINDS saves lives by intervening at the point of suicide and pulling everyone to higher levels of mental resilience, wellbeing and functioning. it also creates better attitudes, resilience and coping - all very important for sailors facing difficult situations at sea.

Hey Everyone, Again thank you all so much for your kind words and support thought this difficult time. We both appreciate it very much and it is a wonderful reflection that the world is filled with kind positive and helpful people keen to help others I distress. That is so much in parallel with our philosophy of spreading joy and positivity around and clearly the vast majoority of people are rising to this level too - so what a wonderful thing to find out in dark times! For those that are new to the channel and don't understand what we represent, we provide aid work globally and use our free "Positive Mindfulness Cognition" processes which are positive mindset techniques to help those with stress, anxiety and mental health issues. Part of these principles are also that if others choose to live following different standards, that is their choice but we choose not to associate with those that live in that way. So if individuals write posts that are derogatory, insulting, demeaning, negative or generally nasty, they will be deleted as we only want to deal with those people that want to deal with us and in a respectful and "decent" manner. We are aiming to create a pleasant and harmonious world and working to eliminate the negatives around us! Peace and happiness to you all.

Thank you for going public with your unfortunate experience. The way you had to deal with that situation was eye opening and as far as I am aware, a first on KZbin! Thank you so much for sharing it! I just also want to give you some hope and remember that your last boat was fibreglass and you had that for 18 years! Unfortunately with a boat fire any material will be a complete loss. Aluminium burns too (just look at a web site called “wrecked exotics” and see how a Ferrari or Lamborghini look after an engine fire). There is also some footage on eSystman KZbin channel of one super yacht fire where the entire superstructure was aluminium and it completely burned down to the steel hull. Steel is the only material that won’t burn, but then the entire interior is flammable because it is either wood, fibreglass or plastic also. Basalt is just another form of composite material bonded with resins also. Fire suppression systems are a great idea but at the end of the day, your best insurance is to have insurance. I think you did everything you could and my take away is this was an unforeseen accident and this is why you need insurance! Thank you for that!! My other take away is the skin cancer advice!! Thank you for your channel and sharing your experiences and journey!

I am not familiar with the fireboy system but it is what larger boats all typically use. It also has a clean agent gas with no residue. They have engine room ones but also ones for areas where people would be. Every yachting person I know uses them.

I was looking for videos made by owners of Leopard catamarans as I'm in process of making an order for my first boat and I decided it will be Leopard 45. KZbin suggested your videos and I was shocked when I saw such a beauty caught by fire. I cant even imagine what you felt and still feeling now. You are great people and you have great channel, I wish all the best and I hope you will have your new boat sooner rather than later and will continue living your dream!

A boat is a floating oil can, a piece of glass left in the sun in an enclosed area can cause a fire.
@brolohalflemming7042
@brolohalflemming7042 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmilne9914 I had an ex who was in the fire service tell me about that. I'd bought a lump of amethyst polished into a ball. She saw it and said 'never get a crystal ball!'. Then explained a number of fires they'd caused after being left on window ledges, shelves and catching sunlight, acting like a magnifying lens and starting a fire. Same with other glassware and ornaments. But as well as not keeping flammables onboard, I'm wondering if lithium batteries in cameras or laptops may have been the culprit.They don't like being hot, as well as risk of corrosion causing shorts due to humidity. Probably worth removing those if a boat is going to be unoccupied for extended periods, as well as reducing theft risk.
@michaelmilne9914
@michaelmilne9914 2 жыл бұрын
@@brolohalflemming7042 Lithium batteries are not suppose to be in checked airline baggage for the same reason. Lithium if it catches fire is impossible to put out, ask any fireman, a Tesla burning is simply let it burn out. As for theft, unless it is the whole boat, no-one steals anymore because the reward to risk is so small, A battery that maybe will get $10 for scrap compared to time in jail, panhandling is easier and more lucrative.

Thank you for sharing your story. We had a fire on our boat once. An electrical fault in a fuel lift pump, (while sailing). Luckily for us, my wife was inside the cabin and noticed smoke coming from under the cabin floor. Luckily also the pump and extinguisher were easy to access so we managed to extinguish the fire quickly. The whole event took probably no more than 30 seconds and honestly I think another minute and we would have been abandoning the boat. It is scary how fast this can happen. Smoke alarms and fire extinguishers!

So glad that your insurance company has taken positive movement. Regarding suggestions for fire suppression systems (FSS) I have a couple of things for you to look at. 1) Automatic FSS installed in engine compartments and areas where batteries are located 2) Suppression medium should be Halon, which would smother a fire very quickly without affecting any systems 3) FSS should be activated by: (a) Manual Pull Station(s); (b) Fire Wire (when insulation melts it will allow two conductors to pass signal to discharge FSS medium); (c) sprinkler head activated much like Fire Wire. The Fire Wire is laid out so that it is around the engines and the rest of the compartment. Another medium to use is one of the most affective: water. Ideally, you could use fresh water spraying a low velocity fog, which both cools and smothers fires. Sea water can also be used and is the most widely used medium by Naval & Cruise Ships. Yes, it will attack and ruin your electronics, but would save you from abandoning your boat while on passage. I really like your ideas about using basalt mast to prevent lightning strike-caused fire..of course the standing rigging would still allow lightning strike to occur, but a greatly reduced probability. Aluminum hulls will allow you to go anywhere in the World with confidence and repairs can be made with welds. You don’t even need to paint it, but it would prevent corrosion.
@peterlee2622
@peterlee2622 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your videos, I am sure they will be a wake-up call for many other boaters. Another potential source of fires is the boat's electrical system. They invariably use storage batteries, such as lead acid or lithium, which are low voltage (e.g.12V or 24V) but capable of massive amounts of current if short circuited. Boat owners frequently make additions and modifications to systems on board, such as adding solar panels with associated controllers and other electronics. It is absolutely vital that appropriate overcurrent protection, e.g. correctly sized fuses or circuit breakers are used to protect the wiring etc if a fault happens in a piece of electrical or electronic gear (or the mast gets struck by lightning). Plenty of fire extinguishers available, ready access to liferaft and ditch bag, have escape hatches from forward berths and have a practiced escape plan - all good things to think about! Do a careful risk assessment, considering all the different ways things could go wrong, and plan what you would do about them, particularly if you are offshore.

great upbeat video .. Prior to my sailing dingy ownership I used to go to sailing clubs to feel the vibes and gain insider knowledge and tips.. I do not think the comment that even people without boats was aimed at you good folk . I have no idea how an unattended boat could decide to self ignite . like yours seemingly / obviously did A number of years ago I was parked in a services area car park in my part aluminium and part fiberglass campervan .and a black BMW suv came and parked in an open area with smoke coming from under the bonnet . I approached the smoking car and directed my co2 fire extinguisher through the grill and into the engine compartment . On opening the bonnet the seat of the smallish fire was towards the rear of the engine and bulkhead . My fire extinguisher was empty and no one else offered to assist . However a guy had run from the petrol pump area with a large water fire extinguisher which worked really well .. dousing the hot fire which had already melted the aluminium cam cover of the engine .. Unfortunately the fire had taken hold inside the car and the whole dash area was pouring black smoke fumes making visibility impossible .. Then the fire brigade arrived and within a short time , their powerful water jet had extinguished the flames . but by then the car was a write off.. I never did get paid for my empty fire extinguisher which failed to suppress the under bonnet fire .. I believe that a well aimed bucket of good old water would have achieved an immediate knock down of the initial fire . Having a battery isolation switch like on racing / rally cars would be a sensible precaution on a valuable asset like yours .. good to see those blue eyes sparkling afresh ..

Such good advice, thank you for your thoughts. Thankfully you weren't in the middle of the ocean. I know when we were traveling in our motorhome full-time we were extremely concerned about fire (after all it is your home), but that didn't stop our motorhome from catching fire because a switch failed and didn't turn off the hydraulic jack pump and while we were driving down the road in northern Idaho our home caught fire. We pulled over to the side of the road, and while I was unhooking the car, dragging containers from the holds, my wife was calling 911(thank God for cell phones). To our surprise, the fire truck arrived within minutes. All worked out ok, a week or so at Bud's repair shop and we were on our way with a much better-designed motorhome and also very clean to boot. It can happen to anybody, anytime, anywhere. To the critics, please don't be so quick to judge. By the way, after spending a summer in Florida in our motorhome, I can tell you that the thunderstorms are vicious and if I were to guess, that would be my first guess as to the cause.

I'm so happy your insurance company stepped up. I'm very sorry you have to go through this, but everything I learn from you will be part of my discussions with an insurance broker. (And yes the aluminum Garcia moved up my wish list.) And part of my boat preparations. Fire triangle: Fire needs three things, fuel, oxygen, heat. Remove any one of these and fire goes out. This is the core of all this. CO2 is good for electronics - puts out the fire without damaging or shorting the circuits. These automatic systems can be installed inside cabinets. An infrared smart phone camera attachment. Finds the hot spots. If there's some corrosion or a gap in your electrical connections at a glance with this device you should be able to see it. Something that's warm now, might get hot later. (Electrical shorts causing arcing carbonize the surface increasing resistance. Increased resistance generates heat. ) Sprinklers. I installed these in a kitchen remodel. Very inexpensive. I did it without permits. The building inspector shrugged - they weren't required, the permitting and inspection process is a huge hassle, and the worse that can happen is you flood your kitchen. (30 years later they're still ready.) Sprinklers might give you more time to get off the boat with your ditch bag and life raft. (Someone in the boat world knows more about this.) Fire extinguishers. I find that whatever the requirement is it's usually half as many as it should be. A home kitchen with two entrances and the stove in the middle. A fire can trap you on either side of the stove. If you only have one extinguisher on one side of your stove you won't be able to get to it if you are on the other side of the fire. I'd want one on the way into the boat from the helm and one in each ama so it's handy as you get out of bed. What I've learned about fire safety is that there are people who really understand this. There's also some DIY additions to this (like extra fire extinguishers and my DIY sprinkler system) that usually don't cost much, don't interfere with the current state of the art, but which can give you more options. Stove top grease fires. If you put water on them they spatter the hot burning grease - burn you and spread the fire. Best protection is a lid to smother it. Maybe figure out a way of having a lid out all the time. It can even be on the wall or counter opposite the stove top. Grab it, use it as a shield, put it over the pan. And of course electronic devices. The airlines have metal boxes on board, so if someone's phone starts getting too hot it goes in the box. I've experienced two electrical fire dangers from rain. The first was my 240vAC table saw extension cord plug. Used it for 12 years - never moved, never damaged. One drizzling day I walked out my back door and heard sizzling. I looked at the plug and just then the saw dust around it caught fire. Had I been earlier or later.... (I replaced the plugs with the connectors in an exterior electrical box.) Another time in Japan my Anker battery connected to my iPhone, in the rain (the iPhone 6s had a battery dying issue so I often had to plug it into the battery mid-day. Needed it for GPS). The charging connector going into the battery overheated and started to melt and char. I wiped it off, blew it out, got it out of the rain - still works fine. A bootleg Apple PowerBook power block overheated. (I know my Apple stuff - it looked legit until after it almost caused a fire and I opened it up.) Electronics on a boat getting wet could get one of these shorts. A damaged, faulty or wet device connected to a charger can overheat. This should be part of the Captain's talk to new arrivals. Hope this contributes. Also on the skin spot inspection and paper drawing: How about everyone begin by finding an arbitrary number of spots, say 6, on their partner to watch. Now they have to decide which freckle is bigger and makes the list, and they've establish a baseline, so if they find a new freckle that's bigger - they know it's probably new.

Fire needs 4 elements. It is no longer referred to as the fire triangle due to the 4th element which is “a chemical reaction” and is referred to as the fire tetrahedron. Without the chemical reaction fire will not occur.

Hi Doctors, So glad to see an occasional smile and laugh come through. It's not uncommon to have anger after some form of personal loss, like a home robbery, theft of a new car, loss of a loved one. But most of us find a way to get through it and even when that memory pop's back up in our head, it's short lived and then the laughter soon begins. So remember that old song " When your Smiling" the sun keeps shining through.

I think what is so impactful, is the thought of what if this had happened, while you were on it and at sea (or even docked for that matter). I know it’s devastating for you, but we will be thankful that you are here to tell us the story. Good luck for your future endeavours. Edit… Think Exploration 52… all alloy 😊

Hi Barefoot Doctors, David here from Tasmania. Just started watching your videos yesterday (Friday) and was so saddened to see your beautiful vessel destroyed. Hint on Fire Protection. I was in the Fire Protection business for most of my working life. (Wormald Fire) We used to sell and install a Halon system that consisted of a Halon cylinder (available in many sizes from 5 to 100 Kg) and about 5 to 10 metres of high pressure plastic tubing. Place the cylinder in your danger area, run the plastic tubing around your engine bay or battery bank, or whatever, set it up and it is ready to go. Halon is breathable (Trust me I have breathed in more Halon gases that I care to remember) wont damage sensitive equipment, and doesn't leave residue. ie no clean up. Plus the cylinders can be refilled. We sold hundreds of these system to the big mining companies, mainly BHP, and installed them in the engine bays of 200 tonne dump trucks and excavators etc, at Broken Hill, Newcastle etc. Even fitted one system to an AA Fuel Dragster. Halon is not necessarily good for the ozone layer, but if you have to set it off out in the ocean, you should survive, and have no cleaning up to do. I have seen the massive damage/trouble that Foam and Dry Powder extinguishers do. Co2 is good but can be very dangerous. Unfortunately being on a boat, you have just about every combustible material known to man around you. I hope everything turns out well for. You will get through all this. Stiff upper lip, and all that. Cheers, David

Thanks for your comment Henry! I think the best way to see how well you can do it is to go for some passage sailing with friends or charter a boat for a week. The activities you end up doing are things like climbing in and out the dinghy, up onto harbour walls, into the bilges of the boat and climbing up the mast to the boom to free up the sail. Most other things can be done with winches and assistance. It also depends on where you are sailing and where you will be anchoring / mooring / marinas. Being able to get from one end of the boat to the other to put fenders somewhere if you are about to bump is occ needed too. Using marinas is harder than anchoring off but if you need help in marinas, you can radio in as you approach and they will (usually) help... If you are reasonably agile, you would be fine and you do not need to be a hero or particularly strong as there are usually ways of getting things done easily... HOPe that helps!

So nice to see you both smiling again! I already see a silver lining for the boating community since this brings awareness of the need to have a discussion on safety measures. Often safety gets overlooked in the excitement of all the fun and joy of starting to actively live your dreams. Much like having fun in the sun can make one forget about needing to protect your skin while doing so. Just for the sense of being able to understand the cause I hope the investigators are able to burn thru the mess and cool any anxieties so you can move on without fear of things going up in smoke ever again! LOL My money is betting on the outlandish thought that a hungry iguana got aboard and knocked something over in the wrong place...they aren't known for their grace! Ok, enough silliness! Please do keep filming as you go along, especially the boat shopping part, we all know how much other yachties love to look at new boats. BTW, I'm pretty sure I heard a giant sigh of relief all the way over in the USA when the insurance stepped up and started getting busy for you. Insurance is a really strange thing when you think about it, you're betting money in a gamble with the company that you only win if something happens bad enough to get your wager to pay off! I've been paying car insurance premiums for almost 50 years and never had a claim, but I keep telling myself it's a price to pay for peace of mind.

First, I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost one in a hurricane and relate to all of the emotions your feeling. In looking for a silver lining, this video might just contain it. Perhaps this is your next calling. Wishing you the best.

I ran across your channel within the past few days and I'm heartfelt sorry you went through the experience of losing your vessel. I know I'm coming into the conversation a month late, but I wanted to share thoughts regarding fire suppression. I worked for the US Navy at a couple of their shipyards. I used to install and test piping systems, including fire suppression, as part of my job. One item I haven't heard discussed on your vlog is FM-200 systems. They are very effective in enclosed spaces, it's not banned like Halon, its not corrosive, non-condductive and it's breathable when used properly. I highly recommend researching these systems when creating your spec sheets for your future vessel. Separate thought. When considering an aluminum vessel, do not allow the builder to use aluminum seawater piping (most wouldn't). As saltwater is corrosive to aluminum, those pipes degrade from the inside-out resulting in potential for catastrophic failure before realizing a problem exists.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 2 жыл бұрын
Dear Henry, Thanks for that useful info! Given you say that Halon is banned, I presumed you are Australian but you say you worked with the US Navy? I am not aware of FM200 but will look it up for future boats as you suggest - thanks! We have had trouble finding someone with fire suppression expertise to discuss the broader advice for yachties on camera for the channel. Charter boats in Australia require a petrol driven water pump (that can also double as an emergency bite pump) but how many and what type of other extinguishers should we have on cruising boats, should we have automatic systems in the engines and elsewhere and what other precautions should we having place? Do you know these answers or direct me to someone who does???? Regards, John
@bgrmystr
@bgrmystr 2 жыл бұрын
@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Even though they are very effective fire suppression systems, Halon has dropped out of favor mainly because of their CFC content and I believe has an international treaty against it. In addition there have been a number of reported deaths from it because it displaces oxygen. Though I have been to WA a couple of times and loved it, I am American and live here as well. Since it appears you are based out of Queensland, I don't want to give inaccurate information. Instead, I'm going to refer you to a couple of sources better suited for your location. I was a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary in Florida, for many years performing vessel safety inspections. The mission of the Auxiliary is boater safety and education. The Australian Coast Guard and their Auxiliary is mirrored from their US counterparts and should be considered an excellent source for boater education. You may get lucky and find a rep from the flotilla receptive to a formal interview. If I've done my research correctly, the Auxiliary flotilla closest to your office is: QF23 Cardwell 1 Victoria Street Cardwell, Queensland 4849 Phone: (07) 4066 2052 Mobile: 0427668556 For marine regulations in your state, specifically Firefighting-equipment, may I suggest: www.msq.qld.gov.au/Safety/Firefighting-equipment I will add, with Firefighting-equipment, more is always better. Remember, the regulations only state the minimum requirements. V/r Henry Berger
