Easy to say "oh I'll kick him in the nuts", but when fear takes over you, people often forgot what they had "planned". Shared by my taekwondo instructor, which I think is very true. I had a similar situation before when I was 18. Arnd 6pm, was waiting for the lift at my block to go home. Felt someone standing behind me, but it felt different. The stranger didn't felt like he lived there. Uneasy. When the lift came, something told me not to enter the lift. So I ran up the stairs home as fast as I could. That stranger followed and ran after me. Thankfully, adrenaline drove me fast enough and I reached home safely (thankfully I live mid floor and not high floor lol). Called the police after. Soon, every block had cctvs installed at the lift and staircase area. Traumatized thereafter.

had a very similar experience when I was around 18-20 and i did the same. BUT to other girls reading this: try to run to any available neighbour's house that's the nearest/accessible instead of running home, cos what if that pervert stalks u home next time?! very scary that he knows ur address.. police not gonna catch them even if we make a report unless they are charged with evidence etc. the most we can do is leave a record with the police, sadly.

prevention and avoidance of any dangerous situation is of upmost importance & always a priority. shouting and making loud noises is a convenient solution to scare potential attackers. having a key in-between your fingers, clenched together in a fist and striking against an attacker is also able to deal damage as keys are easily available. to avoid an outright legal call of an offensive attack, always warn the person loudly a few times before striking. whatever self-defense it might be, it is always practice with drills because individuals will go into a state of shock, freeze or even go into a blank state and panic in an uncalled for dangerous situation, it is human nature. it occurs most of the time, this is not Hollywood

During my school days i always went out for shopping with a female friend of mine, which once in a while she will get stalked by some random guys in the transit or buses, i’ll be her bodyguard blocking these chikophek line of sight and gives her some sense of security. i was taught the keys in hand method. stick the individual key in between your fingers, then fist clasp tightly. Swing, scratch, aim for the eyes (poke) etc in order to run away to scream for help if the perpetrator has no weapon. was followed as well. i didnt walk to my lift, instead i turned to walk along the main road where there are vehicles just in case i was attacked.

So many assumptions made during this discussion. I’d suggest one gets the actual circumstances once the investigation is completed and then discussed based on facts than speculate about the incident being pre-planned, why and how the woman was taken there, etc. condemnable act but not good to assume and discuss.

Had seen this a few times but only now dared to listen. My husband had to chase a person who had followed my daughter. The person ran away. Thinking back we should have reported it. took my daughter sometime to feel safe coming back from home. There was another occasion which was more years ago, a person followed my cousin right in front of me. I shouted and asked what does he want. He looked and appeared startled and walked fast away. My male cousin and my cousin father chased the guy too. We did not catch him. I wonder what I can teach my children?

This was a most interesting episode I don't usually post comments but some of the ideas thrown around in the vid may be dangerous to use Shermaine on aiming for the nuts: Yes the groin is very vulnerable. However, it is a small target and the angle may be blocked depending on the situation. Also, unless a person is trained, kicking can leave the kicker unbalanced. Last thing you want to happen is to slip and fall from kicking Daniel on feinting high punch , kick nuts: Makes it even harder to kick properly unless trained Using keys to punch: As John mentioned in the video, there is a high chance of injuring yourself If you wish to use any make shift item for self defense, i highly recommend testing it out before hand and practice using it. Can try the keys on a stack of newspaper for feedback. But please do it lightly before ramping it up, else there is a high chance of injuring yourself badly Clenching lighter tightly in fist: It probably acts more as a confidence boost than anything. Will probably end up hitting with fingers (thus injuring your fingers) due to angle instead. Using hammer fist makes more sense but it will also depend on the shape, durability and length of lighter. A solid metal lighter may help a little. Not recommended for those cheap plastic lighters. Shermaine on taking ulu but faster route: As she has herself pointed out, that was a mistake but, one's mind will most likely not be thinking that clearly under unfamiliar stressful situations Singapore Self defense laws: John is correct to say if it is worst case scenario, do what you can to survive and deal with the legalities later Running away: Yes definitely. But also at the same time, need to look at the situation. What happens if the assailant is an ex-olympic level sprinter and marathon runner XD. That said, in general, having good cardio will be beneficial John on de-escalation: Makes perfect sense. Self defense should be more about not getting into a bad situation than fighting your way out of it Confidence: Definitely important to not look like an easy target At the same time, usually the attacker would pick a target they are confident against, be it in body size, numbers, weapon advantage. Always keep a distance if possible. Many forget about concealed weapons Daniel on Steering wheel lock: I have not tested it but i think it is a really bad idea. First off the lock is unwieldy with an odd shape, making attacks slow and even worse, has slow recovery. Worse still if used against bladed weapon like sword/knife. People forget that fingers and thumbs are very vulnerable especially if you use the Lock like you are holding a steering wheel. The blade can potentially slip and cut your digits off if you block it incorrectly. To Daniel, you seem like a very nice chap hence i would urge you on testing them out if you are serious about using it yourself. Over-confidence can be fatal when it comes to weapons (especially bladed ones: Go search for images of blade injuries on Google to see what i mean) Daniel on using powder in car: Really bad idea First off, you will need to slow down , wind down the window, throw the powder and hope it hits. Then accelerate Also, throwing powder is not as easy as one might expect from movies. Please do try it out yourself. Wind wind/direction will also play a factor to it working or failing In Fight or flight, response fine motor control will be severely impaired. Possibility of dropping weapon, locking/restraining will be difficult Restraining (especially for females): Unless trained in some form of restraining art, it will be very difficult. Most of the time, it will end up in wrestling match as the restrain is not done effectively. Enabling the assailant to fight back, becoming a test of strength As such, very bad idea for a smaller sized person to try. Girls in general are physically weaker and should not attempt it unless properly trained Also, sweat will affect gripping, so really not recommended to try restraining Sitting/Pinning person: John mentioned Pat sitting on his butt to restrain him Wrong place to try pinning as the rest of the body is still able to move and get out. Sitting on the lower back will work but, if one is not able to sink weight down, will not be effective either There is also a chance of failing a pin and falling over when opponent struggles to get up Sitting/knee on back of head: John mentioned pinning on back of head. Head is rounded and there is a chance it may slip Also, there is a risk of killing the guy so really not recommended unless last resort Zip ties: Impossible to use unless the assailant is already properly restrained. Else fumbling with the ties while trying to tie him up will very likely allow escape Umbrella: Unless you are Jackie Chan or use an unbreakable umbrella (those with titanium shafts), it will be to weak structurally most of the time to be of use Daniel on de-escalation with big eastern European guy: That's some fast thinking and really well done John on traumatic incident: Damn, that's really scary especially it was in a foreign country Shermaine on some Martial arts experience : Good that it got you more confidence but it seems that you may be getting over confident. Most people who train Martial arts will hit this point of overconfidence (around 1-2 year mark) it is when they are starting to get some skill in the art but generally that is an overestimation of their skill. Same for Denise on winning fight/injuring them and run away: Actually getting into the situation is very different from what one perceives in the mind. Even in sparring/simulations, the intent of the opponent is not out to hurt. Facing an actual aggressor is a very different thing. Please do test it out (with simulation/sparring) to get a slightly better sense. The worst mistake one can make in a life/death situation is over confidence Shermaine on clenching fist and taking up space to impose strong presence: Hmmm...not sure about this I guess as it helps her with confidence but may also end up over confident Also, it may seem like a challenge to the assailant. But probably more so for guys facing people looking for fights

Singapore was never a very safe country, not in the 1960s as a third world nation or the 2000s now as a first world nation. The rise and the views of having a government authority overseeing a location every hundred or half a hundred feet just gave the false pretext that singapore is safe. The efficiency of a handled crime by the relevant govrnment authorities just decreases the chance of a crime being blown up, but now and then some do slip through the cracks or are publicised readily because of favourable circumstances. Underlying tho, majority of the crimes that happen in singapore dont end up in the news, even if they were murders, rapes or even fraud to the government. Whether its because of how quick suspects were taken in or how minimalistic their crime may be.
