Just wonderful. I remember, back when I've learned as a mechanic, one of the vocational teachers said that at around 6500-7000RPM in most combustion engines the valves start to chatter etc. and it's not healthy..."but that doesn't count for Honda engines. I don't know how, but they manage to do more" He said that with a smile of course :D
@Chad.D

Honda engines mitigate this by implementing VTC cam gear phasing up to a set amount of degrees on the camshafts to ensure its not chattering.

Lot's of misinformation in these comments. The VTEC point 6100 is correct for the B16B engine, it can of course be lowered with a remap, usually to around 5200 optimally. VTEC controllers on their own are useless as they lower the VTEC point without adjusting the fuelling. Honda keep the VTEC point deliberately high for an agressive cam change over, which is sub optimal but a fun selling point. The car likely hasn't lost any power, it's hampered by low torque and longer gearing from the S4C box. Also having a passenger makes a huge difference in these, Misha would have had a better time driving alone. For the Nurburgring an EUDM or JDM 98 spec DC2 integra with an extra 200cc and the shorter geared S80 box would probably be a better experience, though the B16B is fun in it's own right. They're quite amazing engines really, what other manufacturer can build an engine that lasts so long at those RPMs without ever having to be opened. I'll bet this one likes a good drink of oil though 😀

Wahayyy finally someone who knows what they're on about😅 oil usage isn't horrific but of course it does burn some. It was a champ the week we were there using .4l in 1600 miles over the whole trip

@@Dzero4 haha that's not bad. The B16B I had in my EF would use a litre on a track day and belted some smoke out. Still made 186hp though and never broke 😂. I miss the engine to be honest, replaced with K20 which is much faster but certainly less fun. By the way I went from the 4.4 S4C to a 5.1 final drive with my B16B and the impact in performance was incredible, would definitely reccomend that

@@DavidMiller-yc5ol to my knowledge we never got them as a brand new car. They only came in as a JDM import. The other cars you mentioned have all gone up in price substantially even as used vehicles. As an example a Lamborghini Gallardo could be purchased a few years ago for under $150k. The same year model now is around $200k AUD. We are waiting 12-18 months to buy a new Hyundai i30N and I saw an advertisement a few days ago with someone asking nearly $80k for the facelift version. R34 GTR Skyline was around $50k a few years ago but that's now doubled or tripled. A mint 2011 champ white FN2 civic type R was $15k but now closer to $25-30k. Diesel fuel is now $2.40 a litre but it was the 2nd cheapest fuel a few years ago.

I love this era of Honda. Instead of just mashing the pedal in an automatic car with lots of power down low, you have to be incredibly aware of your momentum, your weight, your revs, what gear you're in, and how much speed you can carry through the corner. It's stuff you can forget about slightly when you have so much power to compensate for any lack of driving ability. I would love to see this guy come back with some more modifications done, or even a turbo and let Mischa go out again. And since these cars are so sensitive to weight, possibly let him go alone. You guys with low powered cars know what I'm talking about. Even a child slows you down. 😆

If you watch the old Japanese best motoring videos where they raced these and the DC2s around Tsukuba they beat the living shit out of them with downshifts. They were press cars driven by racing drivers though. Their rule seemed to be if it was in the soft cam profile for even a split second, they'd downshift. Even if they landed somewhere 300rpm below redline. You can see the VTEC switches pretty much exactly at where it will land after the most aggressive possible gear change in the previous gear.

Great content as always Misha. Testament to how the engines were put together and the regular oil changes and maintenance the Owners have given it. Think you just need abit more seat time in a car like that to get to know gearing and driving style etc… Vtec must be kept on the boil. If you also had the opportunity (with owners permission ofcourse) to take it out solo you would also see great improvement on pick up. These cars really have very little torque and are effected by extra weight or even when A/C is switched on. They are over 20 years old mind. My DC2 (owned since 2008) is a real joy to drive around the Ring and UK tracks. Keep up good work!

Supports and proves what I have told people for over a decade that these engines not just B16s but all B, D, F, H etc of the 80s and 90s are near indestructible. The distance covered by a unit ultimately depends not on the engine but on how much care is given and how long the owners interest lasts. Many units outlasts the owners interest, driving life and still making the rounds around the car scene with different owners/cars/country and still factory sealed.

The vtec crossover sounds great even on a engine with this mileage. With hondas you have to change your driving style a bit where as to stay in its top powerband you have to rev all the way out to stay in vtec and constantly downshift to the highest possible rpm. The cars dont have any low end power as the low end is for fuel efficiency and vtec kicks on the additional cam lobe allowing for the valves to open more creating additional power

to any honda fan this is what heaven sounds like. That scream of vtec never gets old I love how he was pushing 9K on shifts. Exactly how vtec Hondas love to be driven at redline! Having Vtec engage at 4500-5000 RPM would help a bunch for the lap

Before an EP3, I had an EK4, apart from a bigger radiator, completely stock, even the intake, it's slightly less powerful, the chassis is less rigid, than the EK9, but I would say it's still better to drive, than the EP3. With the gearing I never had issues, it always stayed in the VTEC zone, changing at 5500 RPM. And the engine sound, even with a stock-ish rear muffler, sound better than a stock EP3. Actually, my mother is missing the noise of that car :D Stock suspension is also very capable, it's kinda soft, but the body doesn't roll much, and under load the rear starts to "turn" nicely. Also, the engine had 330000km in it, and it was never been rebuilt.

This will sound impolite, but if Misha didn't have a big passenger on board he would feel a MASSIVE difference in the drivability of the car. Having had two DC2 Integra Type-Rs, I used to dread when people wanted passenger rides at trackdays, as it really dulls the way the car feels, as they're so light, any weight makes a big difference.

Just sold my ep3, 253,000 miles on the clock. I was using it for track days with red line every time. Unbelievable that it was still taking that abuse and running really sweet. Original cam chain so those of you that panic at 100,000 and think it needs changing, don’t worry!.

Awesome lap, as a owner of a k20z3, its really impressive that 320.000km, the owner took care of the engine... I don't know why honda changed the vtec engagement to 6.100rpm at the B16B, the b16a's are at 5.500, it would help a lot at this ocasion!

the gauge is out by a bit.. he also revs to 9k, and the hard cut is at 8.4k, so thats about right at 5.5k for the vtec engage.

finaly a honda, i love the sound, i got a fully build all motor FG2 to 300 whp with type r final drive. those eks really miss a 6 speed gear box to have a good power range to lap on the nurb, but i am sure if u lap the car alone it would of been a world of a diff cause of the power to weight ratio. my vtec was at 5900 stock now its at 4750 with a 9500 rpm redline and it helped a ton with some cams etc.

Yeah, with the gearbox in the EK, a lower VTEC activation would've helped a lot. 300 all motor is impressive, must have a lot of internal work done to get there

Fit a 4.9 final drive. Or if you want to get fancy use the integra dc2 98 1-3 gears and keep your ek9 4- 5 gears. Coupled with a 4.9 or 5.1 final drive. Will transform it and it will stay in vtec range Ek9 and 96 jdm dc2 have the same gearbox specs just different case number IDs . S80 4.4fd is dc2 96 jdm S80 4.7fd is dc2 98 euro and jdm and s4c 4.4fd is ek9 .

My first car was a white 92 prelude 2.3L non vtec still great engine though. It had 490,000km and besides burning a small amount of oil it still ran perfectly no issues at all through its entire life i related the alternator once lol I swapped it out for a used but low km 2.2L vtec bc i wanted to do some mods but why do it on the high mileage H23A1 it's better to start with the H22 obviously. Drove it for another 7 years after the swap. I think it ended up around 330HP (no dyno numbers just guessing by adding each parts avertised gains). The body had like 700,000km or more not sure the speedo was unplugged when I finally retired the old girl. What a great car so reliable and I beat the living hell out of it and I even drove it through the Canadian winters certain years when i had to. I also had a 91 integra that has a similar story of insane punishment and mileage 😄 and now my girl is a 2007 white Acura TL- aspec with this buttery smooth 6speed and i just live this car so much words dont describe, like the seats and comfort level plus the power and looks and it was cheap! Honda engines are just incredible. Been a fan since my first 50cc Honda dirtbike as a little guy can you tell? 😆
