When you get pulled over for a inspection I found that being friendly doesn't do you a bit of good. The best thi g to do is keep your mouth shut and don't give up any extra information. After 40 years on the road you learn a few tricks. When going by a open scale get in the middle lane and hold it there till a vehicle comes up on side and make believe they won't let you over. There is no law that says you gotta kill someone. Trying to get in the scale.Never once got stopped, and I always raised hell on the CB and made believe I was pissed in case the DOT INSPECTORS were listening as they always do.And remember there is not a scale in America you can't go around if you have too.

That's one of the many reasons I don't drive anymore. DOT treat drivers like a second class citizen with all the questions. It is like truck drivers have no privacy or rights. That career has really gone downhill with the DOT. He was professional, but all the questions and asking for last load info is a huge sign he was looking for a reason for a citation.

the best DOT inspection i ever got was west bond hope AR. i hit the scales new truck new flat bed empty. he told me to pull over bring in paper work. i went in he said he was going to inspect my truck and he said you have lights on the truck check. hows your breaks. then said you stopped on the scale and in the spot so they work. he looked and said yep you have all your tires check. he ask for my paper work took the info off it and ask to see my log book so i went to hand it to him. and he said yep you have a log book check. handed me a peace of paper and told me to get out of his scale house and said happy new years and this was in july.

Truck weigh stations have off/on-ramps, and they are only so long. When the weigh station is open, and trucks need to stop, and it's busy, they will line up on the off-ramp to get weighed. If the ramp is full, and presents an issue of spilling onto the roadway, causing a traffic jam, staff in the weigh station will give trucks the instruction to pass or skip that particular station, either through an in-cab signal or roadside signage. Based on context, state police departments are not too happy about that typically.

Let them do inspections at Company bases. Make them come to you instead of interfering with logistics. Or take the trucks to a DOT certified inspector and get a sticker on the trucks and trailers. School buses do this. You have Federal DOT laws to obey and then each State, which has different laws. Other than that, let the cops drive the trucks. And don’t help them, give them all the space they want and get a cup of coffee.

Reading the comments down bellow... I don't think most realise how those inspection work. They have x numbers of inspectors. If one is free then the next truck is inspected. Leaving space did nothing, an inspector was free. It is NORMAL to get inspected, it's part of the job. And you are actually required to let them inspect the inside of the truck, as this is a requirement for the commercial truck driver licence. Refuse to do it is a DOT inspection refusal, and is a fine or it stay here until the inspection is completed and has passed. Also, you do not want to annoy an inspector. No truck is 100% up to code, there is always something here or there, which can also be something too dirty. Piss off an inspector, and you're in for a joy ride. And of course, if you stay there too long then you can not complete your run of the day: you can only be on the clock for some time, then you need to sleep, even if you would be one minute over.
