When you get pulled over for a inspection I found that being friendly doesn't do you a bit of good. The best thi g to do is keep your mouth shut and don't give up any extra information. After 40 years on the road you learn a few tricks. When going by a open scale get in the middle lane and hold it there till a vehicle comes up on side and make believe they won't let you over. There is no law that says you gotta kill someone. Trying to get in the scale.Never once got stopped, and I always raised hell on the CB and made believe I was pissed in case the DOT INSPECTORS were listening as they always do.And remember there is not a scale in America you can't go around if you have too.

Truck weigh stations have off/on-ramps, and they are only so long. When the weigh station is open, and trucks need to stop, and it's busy, they will line up on the off-ramp to get weighed. If the ramp is full, and presents an issue of spilling onto the roadway, causing a traffic jam, staff in the weigh station will give trucks the instruction to pass or skip that particular station, either through an in-cab signal or roadside signage. Based on context, state police departments are not too happy about that typically.

Let them do inspections at Company bases. Make them come to you instead of interfering with logistics. Or take the trucks to a DOT certified inspector and get a sticker on the trucks and trailers. School buses do this. You have Federal DOT laws to obey and then each State, which has different laws. Other than that, let the cops drive the trucks. And don’t help them, give them all the space they want and get a cup of coffee.

Reading the comments down bellow... I don't think most realise how those inspection work. They have x numbers of inspectors. If one is free then the next truck is inspected. Leaving space did nothing, an inspector was free. It is NORMAL to get inspected, it's part of the job. And you are actually required to let them inspect the inside of the truck, as this is a requirement for the commercial truck driver licence. Refuse to do it is a DOT inspection refusal, and is a fine or it stay here until the inspection is completed and has passed. Also, you do not want to annoy an inspector. No truck is 100% up to code, there is always something here or there, which can also be something too dirty. Piss off an inspector, and you're in for a joy ride. And of course, if you stay there too long then you can not complete your run of the day: you can only be on the clock for some time, then you need to sleep, even if you would be one minute over.

I was furious with the woman driving the bus but I had to stay professional and remained calm made some phone calls and then talked to the other driver and then the rest of the day was just a pile of paperwork to explain the damages to the insurance company my boss and the owner of the minivan that had to go and pick up the car.

Your also supposed to have a plastic placard that you hand to the officer. Never keep bills of lading in your truck or any reciepts. Put them in an envelope and send them home or destroy them. For instance you arrive at destination. They knock on your door 6 hrs later and say pull to a door. You do and they unload you. You go back to bed but tgey wrote the time and date on the bills. You get up do your log give the 15 minutes for paperwork. Now you hust committed fraud. Your time on logs dont match your bills. Theres many many ways you will get screwed by having paperwork in your truck.
