Common Core is not the problem. Student behavior is the cause of underperforming schools. It’s not that student are incapable of learning. Their out of control, uncivilized, lawless behavior makes them unteachable. Teachers should not suffer from PTSD because they fear being threatened/hurt by their students. Teachers should not be pressured to meet impossible goals in order to keep their jobs.

What is the cause of uncivilized out of control children? Progressive policies that give more power to children calling it "least restrictive environment" and less power to adults. Teachers have the least power of anyone in the school system. A child must draw blood from another child to be removed.

@ RD Bran -- see my post above. You are correct and the only answer is going back to the tradi-tional methods. But yes...common core is the problem as well. I have to deal with teaching it and it is a mess. Teaches nothing but shortcuts and "how do you feel" mathematics.

Check out Lee McNulty's book "Ruining a Nation and Nobody Cares." In the book, McNulty documents his own experience as a teacher, who witnessed firsthand the chaos and corruption in the public schools. We've all heard horror stories about inner-city chaos in public schools, but we rarely see or read specific accounts of school administrators covering up the chaos and "dumbing down" education standards as a means to graduate as many students as possible. This is an eye-opener. Colin Flaherty is another one who documents this wildly out-of-control chaos.

COMMON CORE IS A FAILURE. I am a high school math teacher and have been dealing with this for several years. The failure is directly on the kids, the parents and the state standards. Most teachers I know HATE common core, parents don't understand it, and it does little to address the behavior problem in our youth. More over, until we get rid of this "restorative discipline" model and start the "punitive discipline" model that we've had for years, this will continue. I guarantee it. Of course, it presupposes that both parents are involved in the child's life and that the school district is not afraid of every little thing. I think you guys (those in the video) are missing the point. The government needs educated youth, even if it is only for the best interest of itself...these kids will be taking care of and making decisions for the autocrats in 10-15 years. The thing that is missing is that the leftists do not want what's best for society. They're only concerned about giving free stuff, not holding people accountable for their actions, and defeating anything that resembles tradition and history. When we start realizing that not everyone is going to be happy and that we need to be more concerned about the greater good, then things will get better. Until then...as long as the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many, our society is screwed. BTW...A history lesson in high school: high schools in America, up through the late 70s were designed, or at least this is what they did VERY WELL if accidentally, to divide the kids into three groups. Caveat before I start...there are exceptions to every rule. I acknowledge this and to what degree these exceptions exist is open to debate, but this is true: Group 1 were the "nerds". The ones we so often thought were the "smart" kids. These kids were basically the ones going to college. Group 2 were the kids who made it through, but were on the whole average. This was the largest group. These kids weren't immediately going to college, but had the skills to be a productive member of the community and society. Group 3 weren't going anywhere. McDonald's maybe, but they either didn't graduate or didn't graduate with enough skillsets to go out on their own at the time. The reason didn't matter...you had to get out and hustle and it was going to be difficult. That was the way it was.

Just imagine if Trump's DEA marched into our schools and said we're going to change the way we teach math overnight, and there will be no debate, no studies explaining why we are doing this, why it's better, and how more kids succeed using this method. They just do it. Teacher's would be walking out and marching in the streets. This is the strangest thing I've ever seen with regard to education, and I can't figure out how they managed to do this with little or no push back at all from educators.

When I taught I wanted my students to be proficient in all areas and I taught special education. Most of my students had problems with decoding but they were great at comprehension. If someone read it to them they could take the information use it. I use some of my time teaching students how to think and then they take those strategies to solve life problems.
@macc2400386 жыл бұрын
There's is an inordinate interest by these students in what clothes they are wearing, what the words are to the latest rap song, who is a better sports figure etc. In short, their priorities are skewed. Education is not a priority in these households. In those where it is the children will succeed. If kids see their friends have a mindset that is anti-education, and they agree that it's cool to think that way, they will adopt that mindset and place the idea of reading and studying and memorizing on the back burner. Blaming the schools, the teachers, money, is nonsense. It's the culture that getting an education is something that one can kick down the road and perhaps get some other time but for right now I'm going to do as the majority of my friends are doing and so what. Somehow things will work themselves out. And then when they hit adult age and it doesn't ? Who can I blame it on ?

Despite divorce and untold disagreements, my ex- and I insisted on proper education. All 3 of our kids are college grads with GREAT careers. Grandkids are excelling so well (going to # 1 high school in state of Florida) that it is almost scary !! Only downside was that at the school my grandkids were at in elementary school, NONE of their friends got into the # 1 junior/senior high school in the state and they had to leave ALL of their friends behind. Had to sit them down and explain to them that despite all the talk of equality that we do discriminate in this country and one way it is done is by ability, education and intelligence. To get into this school, they had to apply, be tested, recommended by their previous teachers, have an in person interview and show an interest in academics. Granddaughter has a 124.3% grade point average due to advanced and honors classed - # 1 grade point average in the school. She is in the 10th grade and colleges are all ready falling all over themselves trying to recruit her. Same with her younger brother - 8th grade. Told my kids to get their masters degrees in their career fields as it is a discriminator when layoffs come as they do and in opportunities for advancement in all businesses. They have always survived by being better hustlers, harder workers, more educated and intelligent. Told them while it is nice to get advanced degrees from ivy league schools, that whatever they did, they were to get their advanced degrees from the best school available to them. I followed the same advice in my life - it has worked for 2 generations and feel it will work for the 3rd generation - my grandchildren.
@WACATX7678826 жыл бұрын
An obvious advantage we (my family) had was I am a graduate of an ivy league school (U.S. Naval Academy - rated # 13 in nation when I was there with dual major in Engineering and Oceanography). My ex- while she did not graduate college was on dean's list while she was there (University of Pittsburgh), needed a math course and took differential equations and got an A in it, and while in high school in Oregon was a foreign exchange student to Costa Rica. One other thing, from the time my kids were born they knew they were going to college. The only topics to be discussed were: Which college and what major. If you set clear goals, kids will rise up and meet them as every kid wants to please their parents. This is so easy to do it you have proper parenting skills and the academic skills to be able to help your kids. That is what is missing in the inner city schools. I know I taught at an all black middle school in Florida and what I saw was amazingly BAD !! By the way, I am proof it can be done. My mother graduated high school. My dad quit school in the 6th grade when his father died to help support his family. But my parents always emphasized education and it paid off. But not having to attend poor local schools helped more !! Most schools I attended were on base military schools or near military bases where foolishness was not tolerated. If you acted out and did not straighten out - you were gone !! This allowed those of us who wanted to learn to be able to learn.

Your just blaming and name calling all Americas problems saying the “Left” but your not trying to help fix problems in the community. We’re supposed to be Americans and United States.That means we’re supposed to help each other. The problem is we have this sink swim mentality. I have mine and my kid is taken care of here in the suburbs. Helping that black kid is socialism. Help the fathers in those communities. Complain to your police departments and politicians about the killing of black men. Then when I visit other European countries they have a completely different attitude about there black communities. They are actually helping people and not stigmatizing it with politics and calling it socialism or communism for taking a direct role in reducing these social problems.
