I was at his dying studio in February. Toru is an amazing artist. He had beautiful items drying and amazing items for sale. I have an appreciation of the attention to detail that he has in his craft. Unfortunately true indigo and shibori dying is becoming extinct. Primarily due to economic reasons. Indigo growers do not make a profit and the work is hard and crops are inconsistent. Plus there are only a few people who can tie the fabric to produce the beautiful designs. Much of that work is being outsourced to other countries.

I've watched a lot of JP traditional craftmanship videos, and it seems to me that many of these craftsmen take pride in having their hands stained by their work. Almost like a badge of honor proving their dedication to their chosen craft. Maybe it's nothing, but that's the feeling I get.

It's hard to not respect the Japanese crafts people when they work so hard at their trade. And you can't help but appreciate what they do and how they do it and it's all for the benefit of others. Some of the finest pieces you will ever see are done by Japanese craftspersons. 美しい

Thank you for sharing the most extraordinary and entrancing creation of Japan's Indigo dye. The transformation, of what appeared to be a long piece of knotted rope, to the most beautiful and spectacular fabric with pattern is one of the most astonishing processes I have ever seen. Superb! Bravo. To see such an artist produce this fabric is a privilege. ❤❤❤❤

I was at Toru’s studio in February. He apprenticed another dyer’s studio in his twenties(if I remember correctly). He has no one to take over his studio. He does everything in the traditional method. Even having his dye pots in the ground to maintain consistent temperature. Toru has a son who worked with him and would hand it down to the son. However his son has other dreams.
