I grew up on the west coast of Canada, and all I can say is that there must me ancient history in common between this craft and the cedar fiber craft of the Haida people and other Coast Salish people...the harvesting of the bark, the weaving and the final garment she made all look related (including how she looks like the eigth cousin of a coastal First Nations person)! Same body of water, different side....I wonder!

If you followed the stars and had the knowledge of your ancestors of weather patterns, currents, and islands it wouldnt be too difficult to travel all over the place.

Эта бабушка, конечно молодец. В таком возрасте и так работать! Но сама ткань не поразила и впечатления не произвела. Особенно, последняя - мешковина какая-то. Рядно. Обыкновенное домотканное полотно. В начале ХХ века моя бабушка ткала ткань из конопли. Потом шили одежду для себя и кучи детей. Мама моя рассказывала, как вначеле эту коноилю отбивади цепами, а потом они, дети, эту коноплю мяли босыми ногами в проточной воде небольшого ручья, затем сушили, развешивая по заборам, вычёсывали и бабушка сучила нитку. Процесс очень похожий. Готовую ткань стирали и вывешивали на солнце. Она выбеливалась, а дальше вышивали на ней блузы или шили более простую одежду.

Коноплі косили, потім їх надовго замочували в неглибокі заводі від річки (вода від них ставала отруйною , тому відводили воду від русла) потім сушили стебла і доводили процес до стану нитки. Коноплі які поспівали раніше (плоскінь) збирали і з них виготовляли тонку тканину яка годилася для пошиву натільної білизни. Процес ткання дуже схожий на японський.

Buen documental, sabía que en Okinawa se hacía una tela llamada “Bashofu” que es de la fibra del trocó de la planta del plátano . Pero es primera vez que veo este tejido de Hokkaido felicitaciones a la Sra. Nibutani Attsushi haciendo este trabajo tan laborioso pero al terminarlo se ve toda la belleza de tan esforzada labor, ojalá haya gente joven que quiera seguir con esta artesanía.

It's not explained very clearly but this is Ainu clothing! The Ainu are the indigenous people of Japan, they are an ethnically and culturally separate people who lived on the islands long before the arrival of the Japanese people. Today it is most common to see their culture in Hokkaido, the northernmost island. It brings me joy to see people preserving their culture and knowledge and sharing it. The fact thread and clothing can be made this way is so impressive. Thank you for the video!

Yes right, this is the great AINU! Not really explained, but the loom tells all about in silence of its soul: The warp is knotted, that‘s first characteristic, telling us the presence of the Ainu! Other loin looms roll up the warp. And that is second at all: the warp of the AINU is exponated in all its length, gives it this kind of a snake horse attitude. Ancient versions of AINU looms add the reed in short distance to the knot. Nibutani-san added the reed pretty close to her - modernized version. There are plenty of versions of AINU looms nowadays, up to frame loom version! But notice, she still doesn‘t move the reed as used by other other ethnic loin looms, that include a reed. Nibutani-san, as all AINU uses the reed still the ancient way for width-holding aspect. None other Asian loin loom does like that, but funnyhow you might detect similar techniques of knotting/width-holding with nomads in Middle East and by Indians using pit looms! Next remarkable characteristic that makes the AINU is this shed-opener tool right in front of Nibutani-sama, and last not least this batten sword with its characteristic high blade. As a result, the AINU is a loin loom, like it is a typical thing for all over Southeast Asia, but none of them does like AINU!

Such an esteemed cultural cloth! What beautiful craftsmanship results from a very tedious & labor intensive process, from start to finish! The weaver has this amazing skill in her DNA!! I hope her country realizes their cultural heritage is in her hands & soul! The entire team is to be congratulated for their amazing hard work!! Признаны в Японии коренным населением в июне 2008 года. Айны создали неолитическую культуру Дзёмон. Они занимались скотоводством, охотой, земледелием и говорили на Пуёском диалекте. Эта этническая группа дала начало японскому этносу. Достоверно не известно, откуда айны пришли на Японские острова, но известно, что в эпоху Дзёмон айны населяли все Японские острова - от Рюкю до Хоккайдо...".

Однозначно + за сохранение традиции. Не так давно, ещё наши деды, использовали повсеместно в деревнях домотканые полотна из канопли для повседневного использования и из льна для праздничной одежды. А вот кору деревьев (ива, береза) использовали для изготовления обуви (лапти) и предметов домашней утвари.

Лапти плели из липовой внутренней части коры, называется она лыко, из нее плели много чего, короба, корзины и прочую утварь. У всех народов мира подобное изготовление тканей, обуви и прочих предметов домашнего обихода было распространено, только сырье было местное.

У нас тоже в России лыко драли . А по типу этого похоже также ткали половики, только не корачках сидели, а на станке пряли. А нитки делали из льна и ткали полотно, причем очень тонкое. Причем весь процесс был от посева льна до полотна.

Fabulous. It’s like linen, hemp or ramie (nettle fibre) production on steroids. I’m a hobby hand spinner and weaver myself but I haven’t seen this before. I love seeing crafts like these being kept alive.

Really interesting. I was hoping to see what was made from the cloth, and there it was at the end. What a beautiful think to see. Also very interesting to see how the style is similar to that of the Coastal Native Americans in Alaska. What tree is the bark taken from??? Now I see what the people of Hokkaido did during those long cold winters.
