Having brought the boat out of water for refurbishment, it first needed a really good shower to get some of the long-standing muck off. It's still a bit mucky in places but it was a good start.

The only thing Lemon about it, is the colour. That's all eminently fixable, fiberglass is very straight forward to repair, and it will absolutely be worth it.

Indeed, she appears to be structurally sound overall, and those holes can be dealt with rather easily - especially when compared to working on steel hulls. The hardest part will be matching the colour on the finishing coats of the patches.

@@CruisingTheCut Make sure your first work is where it's the least important. When my wife and I rebuilt our first house, she learned to tape and float sheetrock/plaster board/drywall as she finished the walls. She started in the big rooms and finished with the master bedroom closet - where she did her best work. Don't do that.

Fibreglass boats of that era were built thick and strong. Will last forever. Clean up the gouges well and fibreglass them with glass mat and it'll be good as new ones. Good thing is there's no osmosis, a dreaded fibreglass/GRP lurgi. With your railings, check how they are fastened to boat before planning surgery. Outboard starting: petrol does go off over time, 2 stroke especially so try to start off with fresh. Higher octane. and a squirt of EasyStart will help starting. Antifouling only lasts a year or so . Ask boatyard if worth adding 2 small bilgekeels to improve tracking and steering. 25to 30mm thick timber planks routed to fit hull and cut to taper up to 100mm following hull curve. Bond on hull with fibteglass tape to avoid drilling holes on hull. If you hit something hard at speed with the bilge keel you want it to break pr come off rather hull damage. That hull shape isn't designed for 3 or 4 mph.

Working to repair fiberglass is not difficult. I was a whitewater kayaker for many years, using fiberglass boats. Repairs were commonplace due to banging off of rocks. Easy to do just requiring preparation. Start on the bottom in unseen spots, and once you get the hang of it do the upper body repairs. Use Saran wrap to keep it smooth and keep the bugs off while it sets up. It peels right off afterwords.

YOU ARE DOING IT ALL WRONG!! Dear Mr Johns. I’m afraid I have to tell you that, as above, you’re doing it pantyhandways. What are you doing wrong; the cheese sandwiches man! You’re a chap of reasonable means and this Pilgrim’s Choice nonsense is utter thrash (and indeed, trash as our yankeedoodle counterparts would no doubt say). Everything is relative of course but for the best cheese sarnie you need the best cheese - now as per your rules, I’m in no way affiliated with the chaos that make it but ‘Black Bomber’ from Tge Snowdonia Cheese Company is superior to just about all other cheddars out there. I’ve had slightly better, but that’s been an unpasteurised cheddar from a chap that makes ridiculously tiny amounts. In fact, all their cheeses are nice but they specialise in cheddar and they do an amazing job. I doubt you’d be into the flavoured cheeses, but they are also sensational. I like a good, strong cheddar, no additions, much like yourself, but I was won over by their offerings. Anyway, when you get chance, please have a shot at the stuff. I promise you’ll never look back. :)

The battleship USS New Jersey was in dry dock recently which they documented in videos on KZbin. Funnily enough Twiggy presents some of the exact same challenges ... if on a slightly smaller scale...
@madhungarian3024

Or you could do as the Red-Green Show and upgrade your bilge pump instead? Now on a slightly larger scale, the Battleship New Jersey was just recently in drydock for bottom cleaning, and they made mention of "fleeting the ship" which apparently involves moving the ship four feet so that the parts covered by the blocks could then be accessed & cleaned. Were you able to do that with your boat when you were cleaning? Four inches i guess instead of four feet. And about the annoying dirt remaining after rinsing, i ponder that frequently when i'm sweeping my floor, in that it always seem that even after the most careful sweeping, i come back a minute later and there's now obvious pieces of dirt in plain view. They weren't there when i finished sweeping, and no one else was in the house, so where could they possibly come from? It's a great mystery that i've never solved. Maybe i'll do a doctoral dissertation on it someday and win a Nobel prize. A new expanded theory of particle physics & quantum tunnelling awaits!

Seems like the muck could do with a nice soak in a cleaning solution for a spell and then finish with a jet wash. As for the guard rails, removing them and confirming their original intent may be prudent prior to conjuring a solution. Perhaps something else is awry altering the contour that, if removed, identified, cleared, and corrected, it's possible that it may fit snugly and securely. And I emphasize 'possible'.

Thanks for this update. I've been following this with interest. If you don't mind, here are a couple of suggestions from the other side of the pond. I would suggested fully cleaning off any bottom paint so you can see any below-the-waterline hull damage that needs to be address. In addition to looking for holes and scars, check for soft spots. Then give the entire hull a good cleaning with more than just water followed by a coat of epoxy and then a good anti-fouling bottom paint. I don't know if these products are available there but I used the following on the 28 foot Catalina I owned for about 12 years. All from Interlux (I'm not selling anything, just had excellent service from these products). Fiberglass Surface Prep for cleaning, InterProtect 200E for the expoxy coat, and VC-17 for the bottom paint. It's very thin, contains teflon (make you go fast ;) ) and copper dust to prevent stuff from growning on the bottom. The VC-17 dries very quickly and it's easy to reapply when needed. As for the rail on the bow, I would personally remove it and fill the holes in the deck. It is clearly not original to the boat and I think the boat would look better without it. Add a couple of horn cleatsnear where the aft end of the current rail meets the deck on which you can hang fenders when at the dock. Make sure all of the cleats have suitable backing plates inside and are bedded well to prevent water ingress. Make sure all other deck hardware is also properly backed and bedded. If you choose to keep the rail, find someone who can correct the starboard side bend and then, instead of wooden wedges on the deck, use fiberglass plate to make the wedges. Not as easily worked as wood but they won't rot. Lots to do but it will never be easier than now. Good luck.

The stainless rails at the bow, they look as though they have been bent inwards until they have lifted from the deck. Perhaps a squash in a lock? Bend them out again until the foot plate sits flat again. Of course they might break or crack depending how soft the metal is. Bend the pipe instead of cut and weld. Worth a try?

The plus side to you doing this work is you will know exactly the condition of the boat after all the repairs are done instead of buying another boat and questioning it's condition. As for the rails on the front you might want to call around the other boat yards and see if they have a wreck of your model and it might hav it's rails in the right shape for you at a reasonable price. Are those front rails original equipment? As you've pointed out, they don't seem to fit at all.

I'm not convinced those specific rails are although they did seem to be in the original holes.

Top top work from the top down... You'll have to grind back that glass and rebuild but first you have to dry out the matting. Don't use wood shims use an old ikea or who ever plastic cutting block.

to heck with the naysayers! that's a fine project boat and really only needs cosmetics....paint, fiberglass filler, sanding, spit and polish and you should be good to go....as long as you dont have a lot of rotten core/fiberglass, you could turn this into something special....

One of those chunks was a screw hole for some sort of handle. DAVID, THE ONLY LEMON YOU BORT WAS THE YELLOW PAINT ON TWIGGSTAR M8! Not 100% but I think Twiggystar was in in a bingle on the right an its just a quick repair job. Down this way there all ocean goers, but still something of Twiggystar age is not to be found. Been looking for 'a project' of an on for about 5 years. Nice goin David, keep up the good work, stay vertical Eh!

May I tender some advice? 1/- cleaning of, if all else fails - use polypads. 2/- bogging holes - chewing gum, lots of it, well chewed 3/ - having second thoughts on purchase, use toilet paper to dry eyes, then recycle for the ...!! You need to create a 're-development Plan', Stan, one that is flexible, changeable etc. I don't watch football, so roll on next episode of - "David at the Boat Yard" - script by Lord Archer, Music by Ennio Morricone.
