There was a Tv series a few years back where people were always watched and analysed by a computer linked to all cameras and phones. It sent messages to this person about saving certain people. When the competing bad computer was launched, good guys had to use this type of network to communicate. Since LOS was required nodes were set on the rooftops. Might have been this tech that fueled this idea. I thought how handy this would be in a surveillance state.

Japan has a Constitutional ban on military secrets - so you should be able to operate a very broad band relatively powerful HF CDM, which would be undetectable, and even if detected - it would still be legal - in Japan. From there, despite laws, people would export these units to more repressive countries - like the U.S. Once there are a few thousand of these units operating around the world, the genie would be out of the bottle and secure secret communication would be possible - which would be enough to topple repressive governments who don't clean up their act. THIS could change our world for the better. Keep up the good work.

I am working on a new network protocol specification that includes encrypted tunnels as a core feature. The basic idea is to use latency measurements between hosts to derive addresses in several dimensions using basic gradient descent. The first node in a network becomes the origin, and every new node calculates and self-assigns an address encoding coordinates after gaining latency attestations from neighbors; all other nodes can then verify the address very quickly using the latency attestations. One of the benefits to this coordinates-as-address system is that routing becomes a matter of forwarding to the neighbor who has the lowest distance from the target address. How to make that an efficient look up is something I have yet to formalize, but I have outlined other things, like gaining guest address leases from hosts, bridging between networks, neighborhood gossip protocol, anti-spam policies, etc.

I got a couple of these for christmas and came back to rewatch some of your lora videos. They have improved the meshtastic firmware a lot. You can now connect them to your wifi and have them put messages (encrypted) into an MQTT server that is then picked up by all nodes using the mqtt server with the same channel name/key over the internet and rebroadcast. Basically, I could set up a node here in Texas connected to an MQTT server, you could set up a node in Sweden connected to the same MQTT server both with the same channel names/keys and I could send a message from my phone that you get delivered to your phone. All encrypted via the mesh network and sent over the internet. Out of the box with the stock antenna it gets good range. From a shelf in my house to the other one being on the dashboard of my car, I got 1km. Bet if I install a high gain antenna and put it on a mast I can get much further. Thanks for the great videos.

I've been in the decentralized community for a while. AtHoc networking is unreliable for the reasons you mentioned but also because lag increases with every hop regardless of distance. GoTenna mesh sought to solve this problem by allowing certain users to act as gateways and then its a matter of connecting gateways. The privacy issue is meant to be solved with encryption, but the low throughput of radio frequency usually encourages non complicated text data only. Althea mesh is more of a WiFi router and extender linking project and the mix of these two schools of thought (pocket radio and WiFi linked gateways) may be the best solution to a decentralized trust less network for we'll say protesters as an example.

@@AndreasSpiess Sorry Andreas you are right, I misunderstood what I meant. I meant to use an app in addition to encrypt the text in Wirlpool, Serpent, encryption before sending it in the dedicated App in mesh communication. That's why I said to exchange the key at hand to avoid the transmission of the key in the network mesh. Such a technique is also used in Walkie-talkie radios with text messages. Basically the generated strings of the encrypted text are sent as a normal message. if a stranger looked at the message he would only see strange strings that make no sense

Another board option, our new Turtle LoRa Board uses an STM32L4 being able to run up to 10 years on AAA batteries. This would qualify for something like this. Now the interesting part, we at RadioShuttle.de (new business organisation applied last month) working on a LoRa messenger. It is based on the Turtle board with a buzzer and gets connected to a Smartphone via an OTG cable. This allows pretty much private peer to peer messenger chat communication. The LoRa board works stand alone and beeps when a message for you or a group broadcasts arrives. We are looking for more than month of uptime for the messenger boards, once something arrives, connect your smartphone as a user interface device for the messenger (no WLAN, LTE, BLE, can work in airplane mode). The idea is, that this allows emergency communication, when nothing else works e.g. outage, areas with no coverage, etc. Great video like always, thank you Regards from Arduino Hannover & www.radioshuttle.de Helmut PS: The legal part of this topic is some more complex, I heard that the US arrested an Canadien company owner because he build a truly private Android phone with encryption. My opinion is that we should have a right of privacy, which is given by law, however the governments like to ensure that they can spy everyone (without court orders).

Great! OTG was also discussed for this video. I would be surprised if these weren't completely outlawed in the states if the gov couldn't easily find a way to break said encryption.

Joshua Williams While it will be easily decrypted by feds if they wanted too you would just have to go back to using code words for things. I’ve used radio SOP’s on un-encrypted frequencies that would take people a long time to decrypt. One paper on each end, for example: Resupply = AX21, Pick up point= AX45 etc. only need to encrypt key words and words that has essential meaning to the message. Group words in the same category together for easy decryption/encryption.

Joshua Williams I’m rambling a bit but I’m sure you catch what I’m putting out :). Have used this method of encryption when being forced to use un-encrypted nets such as civilian radios or phones
@PatrickKQ4HBD4 жыл бұрын
This is USA specific, but I imagine that it applies to many other countries too. I heard recently via another YT channel that ANY type of code words or encryption are illegal on ALL publicly available radio bands. Laws are tricky.

These are pretty cool. I had hoped that the Gotenna Mesh devices would work for my purposes, but it doesn't look like the project is intent on making the Gotenna device more extensible. Anyone who wants to create an independent integration with Gotenna is limited to a separate walled garden without interoperability, which was quite unfortunate. These devices would work well for creating a hybrid system where multiple discrete types of transmission would be possible (for example, using Iridium Short Burst Data to relay messages between different systems).
@AndreasSpiess4 жыл бұрын
You are free to add such an integration.
@NicholasAndre14 жыл бұрын
@@AndreasSpiess when you create an API key, it creates a separate walled garden. In order to achieve interoperability, you’d need to release your own goTenna app for phones to use. And then nobody else using their API key could interoperate since no two developers can exchange messages on the mesh network.

It’s worth clarifying that, although an entity on the other side of the country is going to be unable to track your location, anyone with an antenna array and an SDR can track you down locally if you’re transmitting. They may not be able to read your traffic, but they can easily get a bearing on you.
@fitybux46643 жыл бұрын
TX and quickly change positions. Or hack the firmware to allow you to TX after some seconds/minutes of time, allowing you to get far away from the transmitter. You'd only need to be this paranoid if you suspect SIGINT is in the air and if you've pissed someone off. (You'd probably have other things to worry about like visual imaging of your position.) Easy way to avoid all of this: Don't piss off large govts.

Hello Andreas. I'm watching from a long time to your videos and I enjoy your professional styles . Especially because I'm a professional board design engineer with a lot of experience and I'm working and designing complex pcb boards. I don't have the opportunity to write to you in order to express my admiration but now I have a question so I used the opportunity to say you how much I like your channel. So now the question. I like the idea of the project from this video and also I know the M5stack project. They have there a Lora stack and ESP32. And now they have a new kit, M5stack faces that look very close to a communication device. So from what I understand will be now problem to make the Lora mesh communication with a M5stack faces and added Lora stack. So what you think about this idea ? If you think it can be possible maybe you can do a video about what to order and how to assemble and program a device like that. What you think about it?
@AndreasSpiess4 жыл бұрын
The Meshtastic projects supports several architectures (this is easy with PlatformIO). So you for sure you have to define the pins used for the LoRa module and maybe change the LCD, if M5stack uses a different one. But it should not be a huge task. All LoRa modulesw seem to be supported. For the moment I do not plan another video about tis project.

or just get a ham radio license and transmit pretty much anywhere..... so it depends on how much of a “SHTF” situation you want to imagine. In my opinion it is easier to have a ham radio HT for whatever than a special box and hope to be in range of a bunch of people. Good video, thanks for sharing. This is good info. It is my opinion that the best would be to already have a Batman mesh already in place and use IPV4 or IPv6. There are also projects such as HamWan that already do this as well. The key is getting a ham radio license in my opinion. :)

This could form the basis of a 'virtual fence' for animals. Many farm do not have cellphone coverage but this would work. A virtual fence gives the animal an audio warning if it approaches the limit and, if it doesn't turn round, it gets a shock like one from an electric fence. If energy harvesting could be combined with an ultracapacitor the device could be compact, work indefinitely and not be too expensive.

Very cool, rooftop units with a mid sized solar panel and larger battery seem like they would be economical enough. By biggest gripe with block chain is a lack of a decentralized network. Seems like you might even be able to pay for the units by a tiny transaction fee for using the network. Fund adding nodes and maintenance.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Good concept, not free from flaws though. keeping only route to the best neighbor would make communication unreliable when "standing few meters apart and loosing rf coverage". as no retransmission is assumed, or only limited number of times, packets will be dropped since no big buffer is available at the end device. pairing can be done using audible signals so led can be dropped. public wifi's could be used as bridges when no lora coverage is available (needs ciphering if security is a concern). volunteers may host lora nodes for cost of nothing ( powered from solar energy and using more efficient antennas, like it is done in mobile network). Waiting for more news. All the best!

Sending short VOICE messages with this hardware definitely will be the gamechanger. Yes, I know that LORA speed is not sufficient to send voice in realtime - but we can record and store 5-second message, transmit it (for example) in 50 seconds, and play back on receiver device. In this case we don't need any smartphones for typing our messages.
