My best method for playing Sydney is to pack up your stuff and hope for a different pattern. :P I've bowled on Sydney at a few different Team Trials events and other tournaments, and not only is it one of the hardest patterns I've ever bowl on, it's definitely the hardest short pattern I've bowled on.

As a brand new bowler I joined a league that surprised us with something in the mid 20ft oil pattern from like the 60's. Definitely has been kicking my ass hard but the people bowling the league are goldmines of knowledge.

excellent video! I just bowled on similar pattern but with longer oil and it was BRUTAL. guys with house shot averages of 230+ were shooting 160. I missed the cut by a little because the first 3 games, the lanes were super touchy just like in this video. it took me 3 games before i shot over 200. I was wondering how i should have played the lanes and this video confirms my thoughts. thanks Brad and Kyle! (btw the pattern was the state team masters pattern 38feet 28ml oil... HUGE hang spot if you sent it out past 7)

This pattern is hard as hell but i have found an AMF Sumo with a maroon pad to be a perfect look playing directly up the 2 board. It eliminates hang on the gutter and yet I can find a extra board or 2 of hold. Also some of the real slow response particle balls like the La Nina are great on patterns like this as well. This is my highest scoring pattern in my sport league averaging 221 in the two weeks we bowled on it. How? I do not know.

How would you guys play a pattern that's short/dry in the middle with outsides being long oil? Would you play it like how Brad thew the pitch black in the video? Or play within the center where it's dry with a low reactive/urethane ball? Thoughts...? 🙏

I want to see if I'm thinking correctly. When Sydney starts to break down, would a ball move to something like a Web Tour be a consideration. I would think a solid, symmetrical with some natural surface like that would be a good look. Or am I way off base in my thinking?

So then what about short pin balls? Wouldn’t that slow down the break down and help you score better? Even though it would make the lanes dry up instead of carry the oil you can stay with the same ball and migrate In. Am I wrong?

Urethane helps all the time... not. But my Tropical Surge with some wrist technique I can do wonder, without messing up the lane. Urethane isn't everything mates, just saying. You should show some more versatility, perhaps using more different types of bowling balls (including Urethane), showing us that those low-mid range balls are useable as well to cover the board. Although a very good video, clear and informative!

Ahh, Sydney...the pattern that tells you exactly who the floor dumpers are. If you see anyone lofting the gutter cap on this pattern with an aggressive ball, you know that you're around a floor dumper. And I have seen A LOT of that on this pattern...

and what do you do if strathpine,aspley,caboolture and caloundra all have less volume and 10ft shorter than your sydney pattern, my urethane hooks just past the arrows and doesn't make anywhere near that length. I hate australian lanes they have totally ruined the game
@SirJoelsuf1
@SirJoelsuf1 5 жыл бұрын
I disagree about the channel not hooking...Unless the pattern is over 40 feet, the channel can always hook, its just a matter of breaking down the oil the right way. Whenever I bowl on this pattern I usually put a bunch of surface on my most aggressive ball (we're talking 360 or 180) and play up the channel during practice and NOTHING else. Yeah the first 5-7 frames of the first game kind of suck and I'll get lots of washouts and washout variations cuz it isn't broken down yet, but then the rest of the day it plays exactly like cheetah. The problem is if you move pairs every game. In that case, I usually just take a really weak ball with a ton of polish on it, play out to 5 or so, and hope.
@theb2694

Smart lane play. Lots of surface and direct up the channel with a slow response ball is how to play it.
