Caterpillar uses 120 volt current to their injectors . Big Box stores sell a/c non contact voltage detectors . Place this tester upon the wiring harness entering the cylinder head , it will illuminate on injector pulse . The tester looks like a 3/4” dia. pencil and costs about $20.00 . 8/26/24 A low amp fuse feeds the ECM .

Good video. I had a similar issue with my '95 Western Star. My truck shut down on me as I was leaving the yard and heading to the fuel station. I'll see if I can get a code off the dash using the same method that you used. However, my problem turned out to be a bad priming pump. Apparently, it went bad with the previous owner and he just used some type of putty to try and seal it. Well, the putty finally got to brittle and allowed air into the system. In any event, I completely overlooked that and replaced the cam sensor. I keep the old sensor in the truck for back up now.

Thank you for posting this. It's probably not what happening to ours. We have a RV with a 2003 Cat 3126E and sometines it will crank but no start. After 3-12 attempts(so far) it will start and run fine. Most of the time it starts on the first try. This last time I noticed there was no tach movement. Then on the 12th attempt the tach came up and it started and ran fine. Ours has 2 timing sensors, a speed or crank and a cam sensor I guess. And the worse part is they are side by side on the back side of the front housing below the heui pump and behind the compressor a bit. Is yours still running good. Be safe. 🤪

I have a 1LW 3406E and Ive been having a check engine line come on for about 2 seconds and goes off when I accelerate sometimes and when the shop plugged it in the computer it says it's exactly this issue, the speedometer sensor thing, so I guess this is what I need as well. Thank you for this info.

Had to change the same sensor on Monday. Cam position had me stuck for a day in Arkansas. Curious though, did you lose dash RPM as well? In my International I lost RPM's and thats what sent me on that path
@TruckerRealDeal2 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you got it figured out, hopefully you saved money doing it yourself. Now that I think about it, it was acting a little wonky, slow to respond and eventually stopped working but stayed the same after I changed the sensor. I changed my gauge and had no more issues, but the gauge worked fine in another truck oddly.

I had an issue with my 3406e after changing batteries . I mistakenly shorted the negative ecu wire on the positive terminal and my truck would crank but not start. I thought that I fried my ecu but I fixed the issue by unplugging the cam position sensor, cranking the motor then plugging the sensor back in. The ecu must of went into a safe mode and this somehow reset it. Another thing to note is before I fixed it my rpm gauge did not go up while cranking.

Yet another reason cat is better than my n14… they stick that sucker down deep where you need a special sensor socket or cut your own socket in half to get it out.
