Maybe stupid question….. Let’s not consider why only that for some reason you look down and notice your E-model CAT is over heating (not extremely) but 225+. Is it better to cut the engine immediately or turn the fan on and let the temp come down gradually?? Thank you… If you have covered this previously sorry I missed that..

I think more mechanics should do videos. I believe a lot of the reason people are bringing their trucks to you specifically is because you've proven yourself to be a very knowledgeable and very competent mechanic that is also highly detail oriented. Have this channel and showing your work gives people comfort knowing that they're stuff is being repaired by someone that will make sure the issues are fixed before you sign off on the truck and let it leave the shop.

@@malceone you hit the nail right on the head man. That's another reason why people take their stuff to people like Josh. My step-dad has a 2000 7.3 powerstroke that he recently started having trouble starting and took it to a local shop because he was so busy at the time he didn't have time to fix it. They put in a new high pressure oil pump and that didn't fix it so they did another High pressure pump and that still didn't fix it so they put in a low pressure oil pump. They did all sorts of stuff and threw all sorts of parts at it with no luck and charges for every dime. My step-dad finally had enough and took the truck back still dealing with the same problem. He was able to get some time to work on it. A set of 8 glow plugs later and the truck started with no issues. Mechanics now a days are so bust trying to charge as much as possible they don't bother checking the most basic things. Like in this situation I'm sure a different mechanic would've just done a whole new transfer pump instead of just fixing the pressure regulator.

It just proves how good of a cat tech you are when people are willing to drive hundreds of miles to get you to take care of their pride and joy. Keep up the good work as if I was a trucker and was not mechanically minded I would have driven hundreds of miles to have you take care of my truck. But sadly I don't have a truck with a caterpillar engine, Infact I don't drive period, but I will gladly watch a professional cat technician, you, film your work and learn about caterpillar engines regularly.

Good info there, with the fuel check valve there the torque is important. we had the pressure gauge on the fuel and slowly torqued the valve up and over torqued and the psi would change, set at spec. it is correct psi. A trick with the viscus damper is take the temp with a temp gun before starting, cold engine then run for 5 mins and take the temp, it should be warmer then the first temp reading due to the internal ring moving through the fluid inside the damper, if the fluid has gone bad (hard) there is no temp change. We change them at 800,000 km/500,000 mi as precaution to save crank.

I noticed my c-15 started to shake while under a load. Been noticing it for a few months. So I found this video and did everything and still didn’t fix it. Then my passenger tank wouldn’t equalize last week. So I switched out the splitter valve and a hose that didn’t help. Ended up being my pickup tube were original and the passenger side had broke off and driver had a crack. Fixed the equalizing between both tanks and no more shaking. Kitty kat is happy getting all the fuel without air. Hope this helps someone.

It is a honor for a tech, when a customer request you and you only. Back in the day I had a few out of state customers. I dislike checking fuel psi at the quick disconnect port. The psi is before secondary fuel filter and you do not get a true reading of cylinder head psi. I have done this a few times when I just can't fuel psi where I like it. I take the 75 lb regulator apart and give the spring a little pull. I have also seen people use the 100 lb regulator out of a REGEN engine. I have never tried that, afraid of blowing EUI seals out. Also on older FTP taken that spring out and give it a pull as well. Any time I have the front damper off, I try and talk the customer into replacing the front seal. I also like to data log and do my high speed five cylinder cut out test and see what RPM's each cylinder will hold. Fan off, A/C off, Air compressor off.

Don't worry, Josh - _damper_ is the proper term everywhere. Because it _damps_ the vibrations. Same as how a "shock absorber" is actually also a damper (and it's the spring that actually absorbs the shock.) A dampener would be something that makes things wet. 😁

Our Dealer, Wayne Supply in Corbin Ky. couldn't find it, I tore into it to put a front seal in it , layed the damper down and it rattled like junk metal , that was the problem, changed the whole way the truck run , much smoother quieter, believe it or not it shifted better. Need to be regularly checked, I guess take it off and I think they weigh them. Only way I know of.

There's also a fuel bypass valve in the engine mounted fuel filter head. As for that pump spring, that's a light spring. Stretching it an inch and putting it back in does the same thing. But, given the likely age/miles on the pump, I've had them go bad at 250k miles before. Anything over 400k, for sure replace it. Not much more money than replacing the pump, after core is returned.

Years ago I had a 3208 in a 225 backhoe that got overheated. Each head had ¼ inch wide cracks, and when I pulled the rings off the pistons I was able to twist them like bailing wire. I kept on of them for years to show, I had 8 complete turns on that ring. 2 new heads, new rings, (well complete overhaul used the same pistons) and put it back to work.

Might have to send you some destructions for your videos. Last week pulled a 3306 head and the block was warped and the liners were uneven. The deck plate was a bow shape LOL. 3516 pulled the head to find a hole in the piston from a dropped valve. I have seen a lot of very destroyed CATs

One trick that might have made installing the hard to access plug easier is to cut a section out of a correct size allen wrench, slide a ratchet spanner over it and push on the end with your fingers or lever bar while turning the spanner

Cats don’t like air in the fuel. Get a AirDog Champ, they take out all the air and you get an even fuel spray which means more power because of the better combustion. 😊

Detroit and Cummins also call it a damper. Pickup trucks also has front end steering parts called dampers. I don’t know why I hear dampener so much.

Man do I know about seeing red. I’ve had my wife watching me cuss and yell, her comment was and you love this. Well I do but on occasion I do get frustrated. So I know where your coming from. I just started working on diesels because I’ve owned a few and currently I bought a motorhome with a Cummins engine. Had to put on a injection pump and there was no room, you know the rest,

According to Bruce @ Pittsburgh Power, the vibration damper should be changed at 400-500K miles. The silicone fluid the inner ring slips around, gets hard. The ring can no longer move independently so the it can’t dampen vibrations.

Hello, I have a C12 Caterpillar, and I have a problem with the injectors, where the spring is, the diesel returns, and the oil mixes with the diesel, and I would like to know what the diesel pressure is in the injectors, the pump has already been changed of the dissel and the pressure, and it cannot be fixed, very good video, 👍

That owners are prepare to travel a substantial distance for your services speaks to how hard it is to find somebody that you can trust not to rip you off. It took me 30 years to find motor services that I trust. Oddly its run by a guy who I first met as a spotty teenager hanging out in his Dad's coal yard. Hes so busy thatr he doesnt need to invent faults and for jobs he thinks someone else would do better he refers you to them.

I really enjoyed watching your videos, please I want to ask what was the engine doing before you decide to replace the damper and can the problems also applies or happen to 2500 series Perkins generator?

The viscous dampers do slowly die over a very long time. But the rubber dampers on gas engines work until the rubber just disintegrates with the inner and outer part of the harmonic balancer banging away at each other. The customers come in thinking the poor running, noisy engine is a goner.

a damper is used as a dampener of vibrations. ones a verb the other an adjective. vibration dampening or dampener is a description of what it does. Damper is what it is.
