Funny story talking about Fiskars, I was a firefighter for 30 years and carried the Fiskars X27 as my fire axe! I now have it mounted in my basement with my other fire memorabilia. It was so popular as a firefighters tool, that other firefighters ordered a few for their personal use!

@@nimbus3337I had 2 when I was homeless between aug 2018 till sep 2019 and I trusted my life with those 2 axes because without them I would have froze to death and they stayed razor sharp the whole time. And I'm getting a new one this month, trust me when it comes to these types of tools, it is simply impossible to beat Fiskars with the pricing AND lifetime warranty! Believe me, once you used a Fiskars axe, nothing else will do! Have a nice rest of your week 😄🙏

Axe snob here. Haha! I owned several fiskars products and enjoy them as much as my custom axes. Each tool has its place. The great thing about the fiskars is I can leave them at the wood pile and not worry about them being in the elements. They have other benefits as well. I still like to get the old iron out and take them for a spin. I'm a little more careful and calculated with them. ;)

In Boy Scouts, what you call eye-gougers, those little dead branches, we called squaw wood. Easy picking, and even in dire conditions, rain and snow, easy to find, always dry and quick effective kindling. Imagine in Jack London’s “To Build a fire”, the man caught in frigid conditions finding a tree with a bunch of dry ‘eye-gougers’. Now if one could only ‘build a fire’.

I fell a 2 foot diameter spruce fit in 2 min 31 sec. my son recorded me doing it, I did it with a fiskars black handle felling axe. I did however buy an Autine axe (750.00 later) and I chopped a similar tree in size in about 1 min 48 seconds. So fiskars is a definite if you are on a budget. I have one in my bug out bag, one in my truck, and three of them at home. Highly recommended!

I am german and Brittas boyfriend. From my childhood ( born 1965) up to late 90s ,my parents bought for getting firewood for winter a socalled ,Flächenlos".This was a part of village owned forest, the tree was cut down, the log (?) ,in german Stamm , was sold by village mayor, but the branches and top part of log, in my dialect ,Girbel', was sold to village inhabitants to get firewood. So i had to help my parents in cold winter to get firewood in forrest. So for thicker branches or to split ( in german spalten) sawed pieces, i used an ordinary axe, or a heavy ,spliting axe' when the wood pieces did a lot of resistance. But to clean thick branches vor top pieces of log from thin branches of cane size or much thinner, i prefered a billhook/ in my dialect Hoab, over a hatchet/ Beil. Also to cut canelike branches into stove/ovenlike length , i liked billhook more than hatchet. My mother who transformed very thin branches into bundels/ fascines for firestarting, also prefered billhook for this work. I personally think, for making firewood, a strong, but short billhook is better than a machete, which is in my opinion a large harvest knife.

Love your roundhouse style, so much more efficient than the chop style in my experience as the initial downward momentum is used to carry the axe head around the back up to the apex instead of having to lift it for every chop. It is such a nice technique to use too. If I'd followed the Fiskar advice I'd have the X25 but I handled them both in the shop and am very glad I went with the X27, just a wonderful tool to use. I also have their Fixed Blade Saw, a straight bladed pruning saw with a teflon type coating. Cuts on forward and backward stroke, not too long so great in the confines of a tree, and the coating minimises binding in the cut and corrosion and gum adherence. Both great tools I really enjoy using, save me time, and with minimal maintenance will last a long time.

The “beast” maul you were talking about is called the Monster Maul, it was made head and handle of solid steel. My father in law and his brother both got them for Christmas back in the 80’s, cutting wood was their family livelihood and they both managed to break the handle off of them eventually.

Yep I have one of them monster maul as well, a 13 pounder and yes I also broke the weld on the pipe handle. A good friend of mine is a welder and he repaired mine with a piece of solid steel inside the pipe handle about 14inches long , no more problems . I now have a 15 pound monster maul . I wish I had known about these wonderful cutting and splitting tools when I was younger. Thanks for the info.

I'm a "Gerber" guy and a Gransfors bruks guy, the best description of the difference in gransfors bruks axes is that they slice the wood grain where other brands merely chop the wood. Nothing against Fiskars and/or Gerber, they make a fine product, but there really is a difference in what you pay for.
@InTheWoodyard

In march of 2005 Fiskars bought Gerber, so...... And yes the fancy expensive hand made axes are nice but not neccessary in my opinion for getting work done. I have dozens of really nice hand made axes and I rarely use them for actual work because they are so nice and expensive I do not want to damage them so again....FISKAR

Have the long splitting axe, chopping, and short splitter. Love the short splitting axe, it's actually been my go-to bush axe lately instead of a longer chopping axe. Chops just fine, the extra weight really helps for medium sized branches and it's way more capable of getting a chainsaw unstuck than a small hatchet.

@@nimbus3337 I've never owned a FISKARS brand anything before. But a good felling axe should be tested by you personally. For if you're not comfortable with it it of course is useless through fatigue alone!! Find the nessisary weight of head and length of handle that suits you!!! And yes I know you didn't ask me that!!! But the only thing I myself would be apprehensive about would be if the plastic handle could withstand the extremely cold temperatures you of course would introduce it to!!! I borrowed one from a friend up in Prudhoe Bay or Deadhorse Alaska and I didn't see any problems other than it was a bit light headed!!! I am truly sorry I couldn't be more helpful than this!!! But have you tried getting a hold of a representative for questioning and or choosing the right one from testing it personally??? But I have no clue if they even have such a service but most certainly wish you all the luck in your search!!! Again please except my deepest apologies for simply not knowing what else to tell you!!!

@@nimbus3337 I'm sorry to bother you again but is it possible for you to have a Black Smith forge the nessisary head??? And could you possibly cut a handle that would be comfortable for you???? When I was a diesel tech Forman on the Alaskan pipe line we mostly used Stihl chain saws for just about all except splitting of course!! And used hydraulics for that!!! But minus 70degrees didn't affect the wooden handles we used but again it was summer time when I borrowed my friends axe.

Make a 20 inch long bladed sickle billhook on a 5 foot long pole handle ☝️ Those are useful for tall tree branch cutting, and banana tree cutting ☝️ Thais and Japanese farmers love long pole work tools. It doesn’t have to be heavy, since it’s purpose is only to reach tall places. But it should still be sturdy and durable.
