Hi Ron . My cousin recently purchased a Wby 460 Mag , he had been after one for years and after handing over a small fortune had to buy two boxes of cartridges , and at AU $17 per round was not cheap. A scope was fitted and he bought it up to my farm to test fire it for the first time . This gun had a factory muzzle brake but still had 60 + foot pound of recoil . He of course fired it first and got smacked by the scope , a red mark .....no blood . I have fired a lot of guns including 458 win mag , but this thing is brutal , point it in the right direction and hang on for the ride . Fired 3 shots and that was enough for one day . I enjoy your podcast and hi from Australia .

At an outfit I used to work for we held classes on dangerous game, how to hunt it, rifles used and so on. We were granted the use of rifles by several manufacturers as well as ammunition by the makers. Weatherby sent up a .460 and a few boxes of ammo for demonstration and for students to try. Few people wanted to shoot it more than once so I thought I would shoot up some of the remaining ammunition on our simulated charging buffalo target. After a few rounds I was wishing the buff was real and would put me out of my misery!

Hi Ron. Another great video. A friend of mine had a Wby 460 Mag. He could not believe that I could fire 12 rounds, without flinching. After the 12th shot, I said that I don't want to do that anymore because my shoulder was starting to get sore. As a comparison, I have fired over 300 shots in an afternoon with my shoulder being less sore than with the 460. Have a great day.

Hello Ron, my name is Todd. I'm from Western New York. I have been watching your videos for a long time now and have been reading your articles in magazines even longer, Great Great work. In this video, you talk about wanting to shoot the 460 Weatherby Magnum cartridge. You should really think about doing a video with Scott from Kentucky Ballistics. He has a really good utube channel. I can't remember for sure if he has the 460 or not, but he does have quite a collection of some of the biggest and baddest rifle and pistol cartridges on the market. I believe he has all of the Nitro'sas well as the 577 Tyrannosaur, 4-Bore, as well as many others. It would be great to see a video with you and him together. Please let me know if this information is helpful, and if there is a possibility of this collaboration video, I would love to see it. Again, thank you very much for all that you do and all that you have done for so long.

That was over 300 shots with my Remington 700 chambered in 30-06. After ballistic calculations with a ballistic calculator and firing numerous different bullet weights, I totally agree with the you that the 165 / 168 grain bullets are the optimum for hunting in the 30-06 cartridge. For varmints, the 110 grain is excellent. For general shooting and for hunting deer and other light game, the 130 grain bullets work well. I absolutely prefer the solid copper bullets, especially if there is a possibility of encountering bears. Copper bullets kill!!! Have a great day.

Love the show. The channel Kentucky Ballistics has a 460, 577 Trex, 600, and 700. I hate cross over with other channels, but maybe just for the demonstration of the larger caliber rifle. P.s. I never new there was controversy with the 25-06 and 243 for hunting. I grew up in North Georgia. Not uncommon to run into people from Tennessee or Alabama using both.

The 460 Weatherby magnum is a wonderful cartridge. As you mentioned, when it came out, it was the most powerful rifle cartridge in the world dethroning the 600 nitro express and was not surpassed in power until the advent of the 700 nitro express in 1988. Today there are many cartridges available that far surpass the 460 in power. Namely, the 600 Overkill, 577 tyrannosaur, and the 585 Nyati. And others that can safely be handloaded far beyond the 460 as well. One being the 505 Gibbs. It can be loaded to more than 9000 foot pounds of muzzle energy. I have never shot a 460 Weatherby magnum, but I do have a 450 Rigby custom built on a CZ550 action. The 450 Rigby is identical to the 460 Weatherby -4% powder capacity and without the belt. Handloaders can very easily attain 2600 ft./s with a 500 grain bullet. Though the recoil is far more than the average person could handle, a very experienced. Big bore rifleman can handle the recoil without too much trouble. The problem with a 460 Weatherby magnum is Weatherby’s rifle. First off it is a push feed rifle that almost no one wants to trust for hunting dangerous game. Second, Weatherby’s stock is a horrible design for transmitting recoil. Have a CZ 550 chambered in 460 Weatherby magnum, and one will quickly see the difference.

I was shooting at a long-since-gone range here in Ca, and the stereotypical "Farmer John" showed up, beard, overalls and everything. He had just gotten a .460 Weatherby from somewhere and was itching to shoot it. He took his sweet time setting up, he wanted everything right and everybody to know it. Finally, he settled down, aimed carefully and touched it off. Explosion. Silence. Then, "Anybody else want to try a shot?" I'm not sure he shot it again that day! Funny stuff.
@JohnSmith-f6o10 ай бұрын
I have had a 460 Weatherby since 1987. I've shot a bit more than 300 rounds through it. Probably 100 or so of those were with full power loads using 500 grain bullets - mostly the Hornady 500 grain solid. The remaining 200 or so shots were using full power 300 grain bullets, mostly old-style Barnes 300 grain semi-spitzers at about 2,900 ft/sec. Obviously, I load my own ammo. Yes, there are some cartridges that have exceeded the 460 Weatherby in power but they are all custom guns that exist in such low numbers that you really can't call them production guns, so the 460 remains the most powerful existing production shoulder fired rifle even to this day. Yes, it kicks violently but you can hold on to it and it is bearable. For offhand shooting that is. I do find it intolerable shooting from the bench even with 25lbs of shot between the rifle and my shoulder. With 300 grain bullets it becomes very manageable since the longer than normal length stock and forward sloped check piece lessen felt recoil very well. Trust me, those stubby 300 grain 45 bullets drop deer with authority at such speeds. :) Not sure if it's still true but when I got my 460, Weatherby did a full Custom Shop action job and some extra details such as a bit of engraving for ALL 460 chambered rifles. The action is smooth as silk on mine. Maybe this has changed in over 36 years. I think a lorge part of the reason 460 rifles get a bad reputation in Africa against dangerous game is shooter related rather than a deficiency with the cartridge. I'd bet the typical safari hunter that shows up with a 460 has little to no experience with guns or hunting and they are trying to remedy that problem by buying the "Biggest and Best". That never works but fails even more so when you try to shoot something with this amount of recoil with no practice prior to the hunt. I bet most of those dangerous game 460 failures are hit poorly.
@Blair338RUM10 ай бұрын
I have fired a 460 Custom shop rifle many years ago. It lifted me off the chair at the bench! The guy that owned it could put 3 shots in a ragged hole with the 500gr Hornady RN. It certainly killed kangaroos well, never seen one used on our water buffalo but the guy had a reduced load that approximated a 458 Lott. It was easy to load back. With modern bullets I can’t see why it wouldn’t be effective on African game provided you could handle the recoil. A PH in Namibia that you have hunted with told me the deadliest PG rifle he’s ever seen was a 30-378 Wby firing 180 Barnes factory loads!

He ended up using it as his deer and hog rifle in fl. But he down loaded it and used a 45-70 405 gr jsp. He said it was hotter than a 450 marlin but lighter than a 458 win mag. Honestly with his load it was not bad to shoot. But the factory loads were worse than a 10ga turkey load out of a h & r single shot

I was a Weatherby gunsmith in the warranty department for 5 years during all the Atascaderio period, and into the early Paso Robles, CA period. I only had to shoot the .460 maybe 2-4 times per year, but it was a nasty experience. I always wore double hearing protection, and we had benchrest rigs that would absorb much of the recoil. Just the sheer percussion wave that the round would produce would leave you with a headache after about 10 rounds. The .460 wasn't nearly as accurate as the .378 or .416 Weatherby. I think the .460 was really just developed because Roy Weatherby was a showman on par with P.T. Barnum, and he was always looking for the bigger bang. Incidently, in the Atascadero years we did not have our own range, and everything tested in Atascadero was taken to a local sportsmans association range. Of course the manufacturing facilities un Saco, ME and Brainerd, MN had their own ranges. In Atascadero, the noise we created at the public range so annoyed the local residents that the range hours were changed from opening at 7am to 8am.

In longer range target shooting back in the day ppl used 30-06. Then guys started moving to the 308 as it started to win more and more. It was more accurate. It is more inherently accurate if considering powder column is shorter than 06 and that usually leads to more consistent pressure curves

Short cartidges will fit in the chamber of longer cases, but unless the rim is held by a controlled round claw extractor, unlikely to be fired, Guess the larger bullet acted as a head spacer, and kept the cartridge snug to the bolt face.

My last 308, though accurate enough as a hunting rifle, I never could get the accuracy from it I wanted and that was after free floating the barrel and experimenting with different handloads. A friend has a Ruger American in 308 that is incredibly accurate with any thing he feeds it. My old tang safety 30-06 Ruger is very accurate but only with a particular handload I use. In my experience, accuracy is in the rifle more than the caliber it's chambered for.

Ron, I don't understand why people put the 308 above the 30-06. The reason I say that is because of so articles and talking with old military DIs. I was told that the military switched was that they were looking for a mid range cartridge that was designed to be good out to 400 to 500 yards. Of course, with less recoil. The 30-06 had its hey day on the battlefields of WW2 where the shots were long and in open fields. Since the stile of warfare had changed to the closer engagements. The power was not needed, and the recoil made it harder for troops to get back on target quickly. The 308, for that reason, was adopted. The world leaders were also switched to their own mid range cartridges. One example is the 7.62 x 39. Even though other cartridges had come before it. But that was adopted in Russia, I believe, before we adopted the 308. Anyway I still have heard it said up to recent times the 30-06 was used as a snippers cartridge. Like Carlos Hathcock did. Anyway, that is information that I have been told and read as well. Of course Hathcock use a retro fitted mauduce 50BMG machine gun as a sniper rifle at one time to and it was not designed for that kind of accuracy. 😂. So I know the debate goes on and will. But the history of purpose of design does not change. My 2 cents George South Carolina

The .308 gained the reputation it has today as a long range round because that is what the US military had and used. It did not gain its reputation because it excelled over any other cartridge, it got the reputation because that was what was abundantly available. Our modern military chooses rounds like .300 min mag and .338 lapua simply because they significantly outperform .308 at a distance in every way.

You can gain weight or lees weight weight the metal should mix that is nontoxic metals of course and then when you set the caliber diameter of the barrel, you can get it as close to the barrel as you want for is narrow and further away from the rifling in the barrel so you don’t get so much pressure and so much copper Borlée of that metal and so depending on the diameter of the bullet you can control those pressures and how much fouling you put on the border and then also your way so you could go from 100 greens maybe even 80 greens all the way up to I would imagine probably 360 greens maybe maybe 320 is probably the nice range because of the density put inside to such a tungsten

The faster a bullet goes, the quicker it slows down. Impact velocity is key. The .460 is just too fast. However you can load heavy for caliber bullets no problem. 550 grain . Even 600. It's just too fast for dangerous game distances.

It is too much gun. The famous Kevin Robertson tells the story of a Cape Buffalo hunt where a client of his put 14, 460W rounds into a Cape Buffalo and they passed through it and it didn't stop the charge. The client had two black eyes and bruising from his chest right up his shoulder and neck afterwards. In his long interview on KZbin he says the biggest and best round for any dangerous game in Africa is one that sends a 450-500gn solid bullet with a sectional density of more than .310 at 2100fps. He said speed is your enemy and he sings the praises of the 450/500, 470/500, the 505 Gibbs, 500 Jeffrey and the 404/500 Jeffrey as the best choices. He says that he will not take a client out wth a rifle with a scope. He says rightly that there are many double rifles available today that are affordable, weigh 10-12 lbs and that instant second shot. In the above incident, the buffalo in question was stopped by a 505 Gibbs from the PH into the brain at a distance of 3 metres. What is true for the 243, is also true for a 500. The bullet has to stay in the critter and spend its energy doing damage inside the body.

I just found out about the .600 overkill. Needless to say, I'll just stick with my .416 rigby

Depends how much money you have in my experimentation you can do and or what you’re selling!

If any projectile can claim “inherent” accuracy it has to be the 7mm. Of course, you can make any rifle and projectile accurate. But off the shelf and non custom rifles ammo, any 7mm cartridge will be “inherently accurate”.

Why would you need anything more than a .416 rugby!! For anything!! Small or large!

Because the 404 Jeffery is there. The Rigby got all the glory but the Jeffery did the work

I don’t think there is a best load for a certain caliber it’s only the best for that rifle

So if it is ineffective on targets why would anyone buy it? Can you elaborate on what you mean about it being ineffective on target?...

JMC, I'm merely reporting what I've read/heard many times over the years. The 460 Wby Mag doesn't produce the effects one would think it should. I don't know it it's due to poor bullet choice (hard to imagine since they often if not usually use solids) or poor shooting due to flinching. I can't imagine what else would cause it to "fail," yet that's the reputation it seems to have earned, whether deserved or not. You might write/call Weatherby and get their take on it.

@@RonSpomerOutdoors ok thank you. I was just wondering since it's such a huge cartridge. I can't imagine something surviving a hit with it. Unless the recoil has something to do with people maybe making less than ideal shots. It was on my wish list as something I would buy if I ever had the chance, so that's really why I was asking. Was considering I might need to take it off after I heard what you said. Love your channel by the way. Thank you Ron.

Theres no such thing as overkill, dead is dead, but there is such a thing as undergunned

378 Weatherby will Punish you way more, than the 460. Trust me, I’ve owned several.378’s, they will give you a RECOIL HEADACHE. The .460 Weatherby is more like shooting a 10 Gage Shotgun. The Recoil is Slower… if that makes sense. Most .416’s Recoil the same.

I hear similar sentiment often, John, and I don't doubt you feel what you feel, but recoil is a product of ejecta mass (powder and bullet) and velocity dampened by weight of the rifle. So, in 12-pound rifles a 378 Wby. throwing a 300-gr. bullet 2,900 fps (112-grs. powder) recoil energy will be around 54 f-p and recoil velocity 17 fps. A 460 Wby. spitting a 500-gr. bullet 2,550 fps (120-grs. powder) recoil energy is 93 f-p and recoil velocity is 22.3 fps.

I have never seen a video that garnered as many lies for answers as this one-I had a gunsmith buddy of mine that built a 458 lightweight that was 7 pounds and after 3 or 4 shot my nose would be bleeding and shoulder black-460's are known for breaking their stocks after as few as 20 rounds
