EDIT* Accidentally said the Mark V was produced in Germany for the first 21 years, but meant to say 11 years.... the production in West Germany stopped after 1970, then moved to Howa in Japan from 1971 to 1994. Also they are currently made in Wyoming not Cali.

Norma has for many years made the Weatherby ammo. As an Alaskan for 30 years and guided brown bear hunts the 460 Wby is very commonly used in Alaska. It isn't at all to go into a gun shop in Alaskan then see a Weatherby in 460. I have own the Weatherby in 378

That’s not the only thing you got wrong but you seem pretty new to the whole thing. There now made in Sheridan Wyoming. Beautiful rifle that’s a great find. After that many years I’m sure I would have shot it, but good on you for giving her the glory day after that many years. 👍👍

@@Dalesarty do you know when they stopped making them in California? Or maybe they never were, hard to validate our sources of course, because Weather by really didn't have a ton of old info.

Saving brass is more important than you think. You can tailor hand loads to suit any situation and even make some that are comfortable to shoot. if you know what you’re doing with powders and billet weights, you can mimic anything from 45-70 to 460 power levels.

Yes, big bores are a lot of fun! The 460 Wby is probably the least expensive of the really powerful big bores. I have a 500 A-Square which is, essentially, a 460 Wby necked up to 50 caliber, shooting 600 gr. bullets and is a bit more powerful. Two well known bolt action rifles and cartridges that are more powerful than the 460 Wby and the 500 A2 are the 577 Tyrannosaur and the 600 Overkill. There are a few other less well known ones as well, just considering sporting rifles and cartridges that are intended for hunting purposes. And the 700 Nitro Express, which is a double rifle cartridge. The 600 Nitro double rifle/cartridge may now have a bit more energy than current 460 Wby factory loads. But, the 460 Wby can be loaded to exceed the 600 Nitro in ft. lbs. of energy. Foot pounds of energy, however, though important, is not the be all/end all barometer for the killing power or effectiveness of big bores, or other cartridges for that matter. I also have a 416 Wby Mag. and several other “big bores”. A true big bore begins at about .458 caliber, and up, in my opinion. But, all are a lot of fun. Enjoy!

Man knows his stuff about "elephant rifles"...by my books, you are an expert in this thing and you pretty much hit it right ✅️ ...from my research,I can confirm the most powerful shoulder fired weapon period is the 600 overkill (yes its even more powerful than 50bmg at the same barrel lengths),yes a 50 bmg with those 30 inch barrels are more powerful but bring a 50bmg to 20 inches likes a 600 overkill and that 600 overkill is winning (bayou advanced weapons solutions makes custom 600 overkill and demonstrated a 750 grain load at 2780 fps which generated a whopping 12500 ft lbs and the 660grain 50 bmg out of a 22 inch barrel does around 2470 fps and generates around 9000 ft lbs according to the stats by barret) this is nuts considering that most 600 overkills weigh in at 12-15 pounds

Awesome piece of history. I wouldn’t steer away from a Japanese built rifle. It should be fine Nikko and Howa built everything from the Browning auto 22s to Winchester Lever guns and Shotguns. Had a .223 Howa heavy barrel bolt action I loved but the twist rate was too slow. I should have switched it over to a Douglas Barrel but it would have cost twice what I paid for the rifle to do and the aftermarket wasn’t supporting the platform at that time.

Cut the barrel to 21 or 22 inches. Easier to get into action. Install muzzle break. Epoxy floor plate SHUT. It will open up under recoil. Install quarter rib rear sight and front sight high enough to sight properly. The high comb stock is for the use of scope sight. Install 2 recoil reducers in stock. Kick-Ezz Magnum recoil pad. Qualified gunsmith to redesign feeding mechanism. Now your ready for large Asian and African game. Weatherby use to use tough hard wood like Screw Bean Mesquite or African Bubinga to prevent cracking. Custom loaded ammo at 50,000 to 55,000psi to compensate for the hot weather. The PH'S WILL thank you. At least no broken clavicle, detached retinas, or brain concussions. Mount scope (if used) well forward to prevent cut forehead commonly called Weatherby Brow. Now your ready for the big beasties. Good Luck.

You mentioned that the brass might be ruined since they are reloads. Not at all. Thats what reloading is about. Resizing brass and reliading to specs. I have reloaded brass 4 to 5 times. I inspect it after each shot. The brass only holds the components. The action is designed to hold the pressure.
