I'm surprised at the number of subscribers, this is a massive undertaking. Makers, Crafters and Tradesmen, should be flocking to this channel. Great work.

Awesome designs and execution by a family crew. Even sister got in to some welding and the wife doing the most tedious tie downs of lath. I have done all of this to build fero-cement sculptures back in the 70's. So you have my complete understanding and sincere admiration. Thank you so much for sharing this Epic Scalped House. I will be borrowing (stealing = Artist license) some of your advice for my new ranch. My best wishes to you and your crew. ~ your neighbor

Really cool watching the progression of your house. I've always wanted an underground house buy my wife doesn't share that interest. Maybe something like what you have would be a good compromise. I cant wait to see it complete. Thanks for posting.

It definitely helps if your wife is on board from the start, that way it is partially her fault when things get difficult later ;)

OK, I stumbled upon this and have no idea what's going on. You're building a house with eyebrows and shotcrete... I think I need to search for the start of this, coz I'm hooked and have questions.

why use shotcrete vs airkrete? are you using it for the added strength of the earth later?
@SimonHomeintheEarth6 жыл бұрын
My shotcrete is rated at something like 8500 PSI. Aircrete is rated at 400 to 1000 PSI, but usually is about 500 PSI. So my shotcrete is roughly 17 times stronger than aircrete. I don't really consider aircrete to be structural, but I will use it to help insulate the roof. I'll use it to fill the gaps between the vaults.

Use burlap to keep shot Crete From coming through
@SimonHomeintheEarth10 ай бұрын
No, I don't want burlap, or anything biodegrable, in the shotcrete.

In this modern age you shouldn't be using metal reinforcement for concrete. Use basalt rebar.
@SimonHomeintheEarth4 жыл бұрын
I have used it. It is much too floppy for my flying steel application. It would be great in a pool or something like that where you are using it to follow a form, but you can't do the same thing that I can do with rebar... Plus it costs 30% more (and that is assuming I buy 3/8ths basalt to compare with 1/2 inch rebar).
@protonneutron90464 жыл бұрын
@@SimonHomeintheEarth Really? I've seen it on tall structures with curves. Must take experience. The cost difference is more than made up by not needing the thickness of concrete to protect the steel rebar from moisture.
@gizliliman16 жыл бұрын
it must cost $600.000 i guess.
@SimonHomeintheEarth6 жыл бұрын
Nope, much less. I actually budgeted for about 78$/sqft, but have had to increase that to the mid 90s/sqft. Still considerably cheaper than all my neighbors or even the national average. Of course, at this point, I am less than halfway thru the budget, but the second half is the more normal half. The finished quonset hut (with doors, electrical, skylights, a bathroom, etc.) came in at 28$/sqft total. I guess that doesn't count the stucco job on the outside.

But yes, it's not the cheapest way to build a house. Or the easiest. But it will be interesting.
