so local bike shop I go in today another new guy owner no place to be seen for miles. Must of bought 1000 things out this place by now for my bikes other bikes i fixed for people. Normally 10 to take freewheel off!
This MOFO tells me 35$ was like wtf... No way in hell am I paying 35$ to remove a 22$ amazon freewheel! He is like I don't set the prices, sorry cya then.....

Bicycle mechanics have some sort of God complex. The guy at my local shop got offended when I bought a solid axle for my rear wheel and didn't have him install it. He's all you can't do it with the rear cassette on and I said I'll just feed it from the other side and he's all oh and then just walked off.

Bike shops aren't like they used to be in the 80's & 90's with pothead legit Bike Shop mechanics with creepy ponytails. I tried going to a couple around where I live to get a replacement single speed freewheel and they were lost & had no idea what they were doing. Bike Shops nowadays are for yuppies and old people.

yes I have like 6 of them! This one has a weird pattern! odd number of teeth the tool has even! Freewheel cost 22$ the tool cost 15$ But figured since they always removed the things for me for 10$. I saw owner other day he said he still only charges 10$ and was confused lol New guy didn't realize it? no idea he said the guy in shop part only been there few days apologized. you have to realize I have bought a lot of parts from him lol! new guy was just confused! I hope lol

Lol our bike shop sold me a special socket like he supposedly has on his bench and just removed mine with I baught the socket so I wouldn't have to bother him come to find out it didn't even fit my rim went back he had a few others that he checked none of them fit except the one on his bench after that he takes them off or changes them for nothing lol even better than the tool and it was like 25 bucks for that socket it's all good but your right all about the money sad

Different types of teeth you know on the cogs. Some are more of pain in ass then others. Also if it was put on not greased makes removal very hard even with correct tool.

$35 is more than 2 of those tools cost me! Good tools, not Chinese garbage. $15 is our price. Haha, even includes installing the new freewheel or cassette. That covers less than 10 minutes of my labor ($2/min.) to be honest. Time= $$$ Thats simply reality. Were pros here, not high school flunkies. If its really stuck bad, I might charge more. Usually means the idiot who installed it, didnt use grease and its corroded. My shop is in one of the most expensive zip codes in the US. People seem to have money to burn here. I thought we had pretty high prices.

Probably would’ve had a customer for a while if he would’ve just helped you out instead of trying to hustle you like that. This is why the bicycle industry is dying. I encourage for bike riders to get to know their bike, each part, what it’s called, how it works, and how to remove and install those parts. It’s not too hard. If I taught myself to do it you all can too! KZbin tutorials are your friend

Can u please explaine, is the catch in rotating the vice grip wrench, or moving the wheel nut. Could i do it, by clamping the freewheel with the vice wrench as u did, and then using a power impact wrench or a torque wrench, for the wheel nut. Thank you, cheers.

Vise grips hold inner wall where tool would grab. Crescent wrench uses axle as. A leverage point to spin the vice grips.

The LBS owes you nothing and is undermining his own business by giving away labor while not making any money on parts. Although $35 is pretty steep for removing the freewheel, it’s probably a 1/2 hour minimum charge or something similar.
