Little tip, run the housing through a second time after you remove the back glass. It takes off all the glue.

Really nice repair there! And I would have personally used black side buttons to compliment the black panel, and other black components (e.g. the black Pentalobe screws).

10:25 I personally would have done the black buttons with the red frame. It just stood out more and looked better.

Yeah idk maybe keep the whole red frame and glass but maybe use a black camera lens, the black buttons, and maybe black sim tray. Or keep the black glass with red lens and then the black buttons and sim tray.

10:10 There are simple rubber rings that can be placed underneath iPhone lenses when you perform back glass repair to prevent the lenses sinking, think like really small rubber bands. They cost like $3 for a pack of 100.

Unless the old owner removes the iCloud lock there is NO LEGAL WAY to get it removed… the ones you can „buy“ online are from Apple employees who have access to this data via their job and are making extra money on the side

Agreed, not sure if it was legitimately removed server side or a bypass that will lock up again if the phone is reset. May have been some sort of Checkra1n method?

13:45 i really hope you reprogrammed the new taptic engine, it's really important to mention that a mismatched taptic engine can cause missing proper vibration patterns, this started with the iPhone 8. Patterns may work for a while, but it can easily decide to not work anymore after a while if it's mismatched. The FPC's for Taptic Engine reading are even included in the JC V1S board for True Tone reading.

Quick tip that I learned Hugh: If you want the charging pad to look as though it's not been meddled with at all, use the traditional way to remove back glass (the heat gun) and then push the charging pad out from the other side. Works like a charm for me.

How'd you remove the previous users iCloud? That is notoriously difficult and in some cases, impossible from what I know. Btw, great video as always!

@@sealwheel Back when I used to work on phones, most of the programs I tried to remove the iCloud were worthless cash grabs. I’m thinking what made it possible here was the fact that it was running iOS 12.

That laser machine is unreal and the custom case is awesome. Glad you were able to bring this one back to life! I’m still using a XR, and aside from a pretty basic camera, it’s quite fantastic and still runs like new 👍

Could the phone be updated to the latest iOS…? Or would cloud prevent this..?

@@jimalcott760 you _can_ update it through itunes in recovery mode if it's locked or signed into an account. really the only circumstance that'd be useful in is if: the device thinks its signed into icloud, but in apple's database it's not. If you reset the device before ever connecting it to internet again, it will not update what's on apple's servers, and stay unlocked.

Logged out of the Apple ID via Settings or contacted the owner of the Apple ID to remove it

I just witnessed this man raised a iPhone from the dead. All that machine u have is worth it, u really went deep on this 1. That device u used which enabled the replacement screen to be able to use True Tone is 👌🏾. Great work.

The only thing I can see that doesn’t look so good is the glue around the camera lens but it has to have it so 🤷‍♂️

Yeah its kind of a pain to hide. I had an iPhone 8 that I replaced the glass on and instead of using glue to keep the lens up, I used a few of the tiny shards of broken back glass around the lens and it worked great.

You should have avoided putting in the rusted screws as they may cause other stuff to rust inside in future.

Hugh, are you sure it's a good idea to use old corroded screws to hold the taptic engine in place? This could cost you in the long run if the corrosion starts spreading further...

This looks rather amazing, even I would’ve chosen the black buttons. You should’ve taken that opportunity and add the MagSafe magents. Haven’t seen a Xr with MagSafe yet.

Buttons totally should have been black. I'm surprised you didn't appear to clean the internal parts from the old phone, even the mainboard appeared to have debris on it although maybe those were damage marks.

Given how Apple has control over pretty much every aspect of their products, it still baffles me how unnecessarily complex these phones look inside. It looks like a rat's nest inside, with many different screw types and sizes, brackets, ribbon cables running everywhere... The manufacturing process must be a nightmare.

I think the buttons should have also been black. It just would have made sense with the black back glass, instead of the glass just kind of being there, like an accent wall in a house. What I'm saying is, the buttons would have complimented the back glass if they were the same color.

Hi hugh.. im a big fan of cellphone restoration since its also my hobby, a broken cellphone is a treasure to my eyes😁. By the way, i think you forgot to replace the rusty screw of the taptic engine. Im also restoring my Vivo 1611 to its original state but its hard to source some spare parts😅.. I really love watching your videos😊

Also the ring around the lense you can use 2 SIM card rubber rings under it. It will keep the rings up nicely.
