Hi Tim, another great video with lots of high drama caused by points failure and power line issues. Amazing to see how quickly things get bogged down in situations like this. Would have been fascinating to see the effect on traffic along the WCML north and south of Carlisle. With the mix of traffic and the steam charters thrown in too, you can really see Carlisle being a bottleneck. I am sure that the staff are well used to dealing with this. Great to see it from the outside looking in rather than being a passenger. Take care, Ian
@schoolshorts2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ian - some of the staff that I've talked to in recent days have been pretty p****d off with the whole situation - after all, they end up getting the rough edge of the aggrieved passengers' tongues. Can't say that I envy them their task sometimes.

@@schoolshorts Yes, I understand that only too well. "She who must be obeyed" worked for many years as a customer service agent for a couple of US airlines. She dealt with the passengers all the time, and was the first person that the passengers would come into contact with. Consequently she was the person they would vent at because in their eyes, she WAS the airline. Over the years, it became more and more stressful. On the other hand, I worked behind a desk in the Operations Control Center and never had to deal with the public - I was so very fortunate.

You’d think they’d have utilised that LNER train to take passengers to Newcastle rather than run it empty stock.

I'm sure there will be half-a-dozen legal reasons why they can't do that! And, of course, Northern's diesel units were running their regular Newcastle service as usual.

@@schoolshorts There’s also some ScotRail 156’s that now run through to Newcastle Central off the old G&SWR via Dumfries. GNER have made it quite clear that they wish to stop running ALL Train Services north of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, so that they can release Stock for the more lucrative York-London KX portion of the ECML. Now that East Linton Station in East Lothian and Reston Station in the Scottish Borders have opened this year, GNER are hoping to convince the DTp to finance some NOVA DMU’s for ScotRail, to allow them to take over the northern part of their franchise between Newcastle and Aberdeen Edinburgh Glasgow and Inverness. Trans-Pennie are backing GNER’s bid as they also want to dispose of their Newcastle Edinburgh obligations due to chronic Staffing problems. I've often seen goods traffic on the platform roads at Citadel. Why is that?
@schoolshorts2 жыл бұрын
The two inner roads were not designed for the sheer length of modern freightliners - and also have quite tight curves at their entrances and exits which might well require an even stricter speed limit than that which already applies through the Citadel. Many of the long distance freights change drivers at Carlisle and it's easier, quicker and safer to have the replacement man waiting on the platform.

I was on the Dalesman that day but there’s something i don’t understand as I’m not an enthusiast, just a bit interested, so maybe you can help? How did they turn the train around? I expected the engine to move to the front for the return journey to Skipton and either run backwards or go off to a turntable somewhere but our carriage position and seat orientation remained the same which suggests the whole train did a full loop which I didn’t think happened. Where / how did they do it?
@schoolshorts2 жыл бұрын
On a quiet day (see kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4SZlnSdmst8i9E) the empty stock is left in the station whilst the steam locomotive moves off to Upperby depot for servicing before using the triangle to the Newcastle line to reverse back into the station. Today however, the situation required removing the entire train as quickly as possible to free up space so the whole set was taken down to Upperby - not an uncommon manoeuvre. Turntables, I'm afraid, are a thing of the past. The only ones that I know of in Cumbria are on the narrow-gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.
@ianrichards52082 жыл бұрын
@@schoolshorts Ahh, thanks very much for that, I was expecting facing forwards on the return so was surprised (and a bit disappointed) to go backwards both ways. I thought the turntables had gone, the only ones I’ve seen are at York museum and Barrow Hill
@johnkeepin75272 жыл бұрын
@@ianrichards5208 There is a working one at Minehead on the West Somerset Railway, but they also have a triangle at the Norton Fitzwarren end of the line, so steam specials from elsewhere can have the locomotive reversed for the journey back. There is also one at Churston on the Paignton & Dartmouth Railway, which is occasionally used for specials to Kingswear from elsewhere.

Yes, given the congestion within the station, two out of three platforms occupied by stranded trains, they were desperate to clear the stock out of Platform 4 and release one track for incoming trains. It's not that uncommon for the entire train to be reversed - perhaps, in hot weather with windows open, there's something to be said for not having smoke and cinders blowing into your expensive meal!
