Today marks the 57th anniversary since the end of steam on BR's southern region, when, on the 9th of July 1967, all of the remaining steam locomotives in service on the southern region were withdrawn.
Thankfully many locomotives have since been preserved and can be found working heritage lines around the country and some locomotives have even returned to the mainline. To mark the anniversary, the Railway Touring Company ran the special 1Z94 railtour from London - Weymouth via Yeovil Junction, with Rebuilt Merchant Navy Bulleid Pacific 35028 'Clan Line' on the ‘End of Southern Steam Railtour’ which is seen arriving in less than favourable conditions at Yeovil Railway Centre for turning and servicing. West Coast Railway Company 47812 took the tour onto Weymouth, and Clan Line followed in hot pursuit with its support coach once servicing was completed, ready to haul the return 1Z96 back to London. Resident Ruston Shunter DS1174 'River Yeo' is also seen supporting in some of the shunt moves during the pacifics servicing. | 09.07.2024
