I believe you did a great job in describing our beloved 357 Magnum and most of its capabilities, I use both revolvers and carbines and they are an amazing cartridge to have on hand!!! Thank You for this video!!!

Lots of info left out. Yes, the 1920s showed a need for a more powerful cartridge. That cartridge was developed around 1930. Between the traditional 38 spl and the 357 mag was the 38-44. It was a 38 spl loaded into the realm of 357 mag and used in a 44 spl triple lock revolver, but chambered in 38 spl. This left additional steel around the chambers in the cylinder. Also, being a triple lock, the action was very strong. 38-44 heavy duty / 38-44 outdoorsman became successful in law enforcement and also hunting. However, it had one short coming. It could still be chambered in older and/or weaker 38 spl revolvers. Thus, the case length was increased by1/8 of an inch, giving birth to the 357 magnum.

375 Magnum still kicks pretty hard on modern revolvers. It kicks more than a 1911 45 ACP pistol.

Why the clips of X-Frame revolvers while discussing 357 Mag. Did I miss an announcement from S&W? Lose the AI voice. Annoying...

The weird robot voice sucks and the strange way of speaking 357 is annoying. The .357 was lengthened 1/10th of an inch to prevent 38-44 type loads being chambered in 38 spl guns. It can achieve 700 ft lbs of energy at around 1700 fps or so. The info is a little off. If you look up Keith loads you'll see that today's 357 mag has been down loaded a lot from it's original offerings. Nice explanation even if it is slightly flawed

I've got a pro series 640. All steel, 2.25 inch j frame cambered in .357 magnum. I bought it because it has factory dovetailed night sights. I've fired a grand total of 5 .357 magnum rounds through it. The recoil is a new king of brutal. It's been .38 Specials ever since. +p for carry.

There's a technical issue in that handguns do NOT generally generate enough backwards force to be called "recoil" (they don't have the mass or power), but rather pivots upwards at the weak link (your wrist) and is called "muzzle rise". Long arms (rifles and shotguns) do have enough weight and projectile force to drive the weapon back (recoil) to one degree or another.

It also irritates me that the video portion often does not match the audio i.e. the audio is talking about .357 recoil while showing Jerry Miculek shooting a .500 Smith & Wesson Magnum revolver with what appears to be a 4" barrel. While the recoil of a .357 is not a walk in the park, it's nowhere near a .500 S&W.

In the 1990 SAAMI reduced standard chamber pressures for the .357 by about 20% - this was to appease manufacturers like S&W who were starting to stuff the .357 into small J-Frame style revolvers. Buffalo Bore, etc still make the original full-power .357 loads.

Three five-ty seven? Come on! Those mispronunciations and the overuse of repetitive fluff words like 'versatile', the wordiness disguising a paucity of substantive content...clear signs of non- human delivery. Get AI out of your videos. I'd be more likely to subscribe if there was a real human presenting the information, human imperfections and all. Scott is a robot! And soylent green is people! Power to the AI Luddites!

I must agree with many commenters; much information is neglected or misconstrued. The Smith & Wesson ".357 Magnum" revolver - later (1957 or so) renamed the model 27 - was first released for sale in 1935. Therefore, the round was developed earlier (early 1930s is close enough). Elmer Keith (now passed on) typically gets much of the credit for the round. (He's a story all by himself.) He had been a lawman at some point but was more known for hunting North American game such as deer, elk moose and the occasional bear. The .357 Magnum was not solely for law enforcement. The .357 Magnum round initially fired the same weight bullet (158 grains) as the .38 Special, but at a higher velocity and the bullet shape was altered from a round nosed (lead) shape to a semi-wadcutter (flattened nose, impact point). It was driven at a higher velocity than the .38 Special. This required greater internal pressure - to give the increased velocity. This was possible by simply increasing the propellent (powder) amount or using a different type of powder. However, this increase in pressure was higher than the then current .38 Special revolver could safely and reliably handle. A given firearm might or might not blow up on the first firing, but would wear out sooner unquestionably. Also, the stronger load.in a 38 Special cartridge would provide a serious danger. therefore, the .38 Special case was redesigned by adding length to the case. I have read the initial length was to lengthened by one- eighth of an inch (.125 inch) but current diagrams of the cases indicate a slightly longer addition. Revolvers made for the .357 Magnum round were built to withstand the higher pressure and chambered for the longer case. .357 Magnum cartridges were made longer. In this way the shorter .38 Cartridge would fit and fire in the .357 Magnum revolver, which could more than safely allow use of .38 Special cartridges. At the same time, a .357 Magnum cartridge could not be fully inserted in a .38 Special revolver. The same technique was used in the case of the .44 Special/.44 Magnum. That is a different story. Currently, to include the last forty or so years, ammunition companies have experimented with the bullet weight of the .357 Magnum revolver. By lightening the bullet, muzzle velocity is increased and this results in a larger kinetic energy reading at the muzzle or short distances (such as from a chronograph). However not mentioned is the reality from the physics of motion that a propelled object which is not constantly powered (lke a rocket or aircraft) will lose velocity much more quickly if lighter rather than heavier. This loss of velocity results in a loss of kinetic energy. Recoil. Recoil can be calculated by the ratio of recoil force to weight of (in this case) the firearm. Which is why a 'snubby' revolver or lighter semi-automatic will recoil more than a larger handgun. So one must take this into account when selecting a defensive handgun. For those seeking a small, easily hidden side arm for self defense, this is especially noteworthy. A .357 Magnum 'light' revolver is painful to shoot.
