Honestly both of these rounds performed just mediocre. I’d say the projectiles are inconsistent and if he did the test again the results could have easily reversed roles again. I like the brand they make solid range ammo but I wouldn’t carry either of these in a home defense situation that I was concerned about over penetration

The .357 did expand weirdly but the penetration was there . If these were the only rounds I had , I'd feel pretty confident that they'd do the job with proper placement . And although the .40 failed the the real world test it had "Text book" performance in clear gel , and based on that it might not be that totally worthless . Like with the .357 , if these were my only rounds then yeah , I'd carry 'em . Great review Gun Sam , thanks for showing us what's out there .

My experience with Fiocchi is that their FMJ ammo is good, well-made, reliable, etc. But their JHPs are inconsistent to meh. Now, that's with the caveat that I haven't done any extensive testing, but I've shot several different calibers of their ammo. Never had one fail to function in my semi's or cause an issue with my revolvers, but the JHPs I tested in water either didn't open or barely opened. They make a .32 acp JHP that functions beautifully even in either of my older PPK .32s (feed as well as ball and have enough umph to cycle even the 1945 model that hates weak ammo). BUT even water won't open them up. It is what it is: Reliable, usually affordable ammo but expansion is often just not there.

I've seen testing with the Fiocchi Defense Dynamics 38 special 148 grain and it seems to expand well with a snub. I think you are spot on thinking this is designed as a snub load. Overall, I'm going to pass on this. Especially, that .40 load.

Hey Sam, i would love to see a test if able with some heavier 22 magnum ammo in perhaps your LCRX and Barkeep/rough rider. Federal makes a 50 grain "small game" round and CCI a 46 grain Maxi-mag. No other tests of those rounds that i can see through a pistol on youtube, and i'm wondering if the increased weight would make them a bit more effective in a lower velocity handgun. It seemed interesting. Thanks

Hello, you had always reviewed the 38 special wadcutter by Fiocchi and they didn't seem bad ammunition, I ask you if you had the opportunity to try the 357 magnum always in wadcutter Thank you for your attention
@GunSam5 ай бұрын
There are no .357 Magnum in wadcutters I don't believe. If they exist they would need to be loaded with double ended hard cast, as a traditional wadcutter skirt would be blown apart at .357 Magnum energy.
@Andy-cd1dy5 ай бұрын
Thank you, I was asking because I thought they were also available on the American market. I live in Italy and here they are available. I find it strange that there are generally few manufacturers who make wadcutters in 357 magnums. They are probably not in high demand among shooters. Thanks again, 👋

I have one of the early SW 686. There actually was a recall on them. Apparently, the hole in the frame where the firing pin goes through was just a bit too big. What could happen was that some hot ammo could have the primer extrude into this hole and effectively lock the whole cylinder up. I never sent it in for the fix because it never happened to me.
@morrisadams14715 ай бұрын
My nephew has one of those. I worked up a wonderful handload for my Security Six I had years ago. It locked that Smith up every time he tried shooting it in his bigger, superior revolver.
@MrJdebest5 ай бұрын
@morrisadams1471 Lol, I sold my Ruger Security Six in stainless steel to buy the SW 686. The Ruger is certainly a good rugged gun, but the leaf spring trigger of the SW was much better. My scores in PPC competition went up 30 - 40 points.

Thanks. I've always bought Fiocchi on loss-leader sales and used it for practice only. I have to qualify once a year, and want to use factory loadings to avoid any problems on the range. I wouldn't use it as a carry round.

I'd feel well armed with either of these so I like both of them. The 357 mag. has a slight edge though. So it comes down to personal preference - revolver or semi-auto. Here too, I like both of these handguns equally but the .40 S&W has the capacity edge. This is the most non-controversial comparison you ever made, in my opinion.

I currently have the 125 grain version of the Fiocchi 357, from what I've heard they chrono at around 1250 from a 4 inch so they're slow as well, I've had the 148s before but haven't seen em for a while. Not bad for budget 357 ammo, I'm a little more confident in it now seeing that performance. What I don't like is Fiocchi has the same bullet weights listed for the 38 special versions. I'm willing to bet they use the same bullets in 38 special and if so they probably get no expansion. Precisely why I don't like the XTP bullets in 38 special, they're really made for 357 magnum. The only XTP that would be good in 38 is probably the 110 grain at +p velocity.

Great review. I haven't had great luck with fiocchi pistol ammo, but their shotgun ammo has worked great on waterfowl. So it looks like 40 would work great on naked carjackers, but use the .357 on fully clothed ones 😂

I can see why Fiocchi downloaded the 357. That bullet was clearly designed for lower velocity. I don't know why they didn't do the same with the 40. I'll have to find a nice powder load for 145gr LSWCHP. I wouldn't go magnum with them as the ones I have are 2-2-96. (tin, antimony, lead) soft cast. Huge hollow points!
@GunSam5 ай бұрын
I actually tested the 125 gr JHP .38 Special from Fiocchi in the 4" barrel, and it didn't expand with denim. I did some handloading for the first time in a year or so a couple days ago, just to get back into it in case you send those bullets, and I found that the Universal I have does quite well with lead bullets pushed a tad over max charges. I didn't see any evidence of leading and I got a nice jump in power VS using Titegroup. Seems like a good balance of bulkiness, medium burn rate and end results. I feel like I could get about 1,000 FPS with a 145 gr, maybe a tad less in a 2" barrel. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKGTqnmharCarc0

Not sure about the rest of it, but Fiocchi's defense dynamics in 44 mag recoils like a 9mm. Edit- As I knew already having shot basically every Fiocchi pistol load- their numbers are optimistic at best, an outright lie at worst. All of their ammo, regardless of bullet type, is pretty good range ammo. Don't waste your hard-earned money on the defense stuff. As a matter of fact, my local scheel's is selling the .357 hollow points cheaper than the range ammo right now, and probably for a good reason.
